The way _Hair_ delivered it's message in such a heartfelt and heartbreaking way is what makes it so timeless and such an amazing piece of art.

I liked that the remake of "West Side Story" had Valentina as Doc's widow. Not only has she the experience of being in an interracial relationship, like Tony and Maria, but her being a widow hints to Maria's fate.

Yeah, but the MUSICAL didn't come along until the early 1980s; the cut-off for this list was 1969. (There may be some confusion because so many of the clips used are from the various shows' film adaptations which came years after the stage productions. "Cabaret," for instance, was first staged in the mid 1960s but the film was released in 1972 and the stage production of "Hair" first appeared in 1967 but the film version didn't come out until 1979.) With "Little Shop," the original Roger Corman film came out in 1960 while the Alan Menken-Howard Ashman musical premiered in 1982--the musical film version came out in 1986.

I'm surprised you didn't mention Rent. I've seen it on stage both on Broadway in the US, and with the Welsh National Theatre in UK. Mostly, it addresses the AIDS epidemic and gentrification of poor neighborhoods. Very impactful. I've seen most of the shows in your list on stage, and actually worked backstage on a few of them in regional productions. Overall, a good list.

But it's NOT from the period covered here. The original novel wasn't released until 1975 (this list's cut-off was 1969) and the musical didn't come along until the 1990s (even the Milos Forman movie didn't come out until 1981).

I'm so glad you included 'Fiorello!'. It really deserves a new revival, since people don't remember how parties can change. Trivia: When the show premiered on Broadway, LaGuardia had only been retied as mayor for 13 years, so everyone remembered what he looked like. The producers were lucky to get Tom Bosley (later of Happy Days) to play the title character, because there was a strong physical resemblance. When I saw the title for this, I immediately thought of 'South Pacific'. It was one of my father's favorite musicals, and 'You've Got to Be Taught' was one of his favorite songs.
