Zee: "My pick is a game in which players cough into each others mouths, and see who's the last one to get sick." Quinns: "My pick is Settlers of Catan." Tom: "My pick..." actually, Tom's list was quite sensible this time.

@@stacie_everdell I understand, but that’s not what makes for the best presentation. It’s better to sound more natural. Tom was respectful when he was on SU&SD but was still fully “Tom”. Interesting watching a video where each of these people are somewhat deferentially uncomfortable with each other. I agree that bit more familiarity would help the chemistry. Hopefully we get to see that and be proven right. Still a great piece of entertainment.

I can completely relate to Quinns in this video. I noticed the change in his behavior too, but you have to remember that SU&SD is scripted to be funny, and top 10s like this are more off the cuff then what he usually does. I think it just showed Quinn's true personality, which, while it might not be as witty as it seems to be on his own channel, is still just as charming.

It's the same with mmorpgs. Sometimes one game (WoW) brainwashes so many people, that many much better, richer, deeper games have no chance.
@alejandrorivas4585
3 жыл бұрын
@@chobe78 this is only valid if you only value depth of play in a game. Its easy to forget the other half of a game, which is the people. Wow is the oldest, most influential, and most populated MMO, and so a lot of people value it for the community it has moreso than the game. Same with the card games. Yeah, maybe netrunner is a more refined game than MTG, but if your friends all play magic, you meet new friends playing magic, if your local spots play magic, then narurally you're gonna wanna spend time with those people playing something everyone enjoys. For many, community is more important than game quality.
@chobe78
3 жыл бұрын
@@alejandrorivas4585 Not talking about that... When new MMO's were released they HAD the players and a community. Your reason played absolutely no role here. But then the WoW expectations made them return and THAT'S what annoyed me for several years. People just knew one single sort of mmorpg and expected everything from this in every other one. Surprise surprise they were disappointed. It's great that this weird habit stopped at some point in gaming history and other great games had a chance of continue existing.

Root is pretty original and I'm a long time wargamer and totally fine with the pick! I like Vast more and find it even more original than Root, although there are some similarities, they are quite different, and being able to play as the cave or the manor (depending on which version you are playing), is one of the most unusual and interesting things I've ever seen. If you want a space hog, try World in Flames! I love that game so much, but with the maps, force pools, and production charts, we had 2 4x8 tables and at least 3 cafeteria tables to play it on! Interesting thoughts on Cosmic Encounter! When I first got into board games, I found cosmic and bought it. We played it once and all hated it. It was because we had never played a negotiation game like it. We all treated it like a game of risk. If you don't teach it prefaced with something like, "This is not risk. This is not a dudes on a map game. It is a negotiation game about backstabbery and negotiation and special powers" it can be misunderstood and not go over well.

I actually haven't had much issue teaching Cosmic Encounter to friends, mainly because despite it being three games welded together, those three games are all fairly simple and have things people have experience with regardless of how many board games they've played. The battle system is just the standard card game War, higher number wins. Negotiation is super open so beyond house rules there's not much to explain. Powers can be simplified down to "each power breaks a rule of the game" and you can separate all the green powers to make things easier to choose from. The only roadblocks i've had trouble with is the "if you win you can go again one more time" because it's not super obvious and people often forget, and the fact that choosing a power is hard to do unless you've already played the game once. Still think the game is super unique and worth putting on this list.
