Yup I always tip a $20 to $40, ask their names, shake hands, and treat them like the humans they are. Nothing bad has ever happened to any supercar I've parked with a valet. I've come on other days in my truck or the wife's Benz and they recognize me and know me by name. Same tip, doesn't matter what car I'm in. Always upfront, no damage, no issues. Thanks for the great stories!

They're Americans, Linus. They don't do walking.
@db1481
4 жыл бұрын
@@deheerdeheer First thing to know about US cities is that the vast majority of them are sprawling and have deliberately-broken public transportation. So, if you have any means at all and place any value on your time, you drive your own car to places you want to go. Many if not most upscale restaurants require valet service. You don't get to eat there if you don't drop off your keys with the valet, so figure in the additional costs when making your plans. It may be a flex thing but more so for the restaurants than the guests as the driver of a 13-year old Honda Civic such as myself would attest. That's still no excuse to stiff the valets though; they're earning an honest living here. Other places you might encounter valet service are at malls, events, clubs, bars, restaurants, etc that were built without or otherwise find themselves without sufficient parking space for their capacity. This most often happens at places where real estate is at a huge premium such as in city centers. I personally try to avoid going places where I know I'll need to valet; it's an order of magnitude more expensive than paying a parking meter on a city street or in a public garage.

It used to be gratuity (as in the service was so good you felt obligated to give a little something extra) then, at some point, multi-billion dollar businesses got the idea that they didn't have to pay their employees a competitive wage because they were just going to get tips anyways - and so - mandatory gratuity (tipping) was born.

I’ll be honest, my only experience with a valet, I didn’t tip. I was 19, it was 2001, and I was dealing with a lot of culture shock. This was one of them. I was staying at a Motel 6, and they had complementary valet. I thought that was odd. It’s a Motel. Why can’t I just park myself? Complementary, huh? So, that means free, right? You couldn’t park your car anywhere else. They had to take it. I remember wanting to get something out of my car and they wanted to bring out my car. I told them no. It was literally right there. I can walk 20 feet. It would take longer for them to bring it up, and then repark it. 19 years later, if they expected me to tip them, I don’t feel bad about it. It’s complementary, so Motel 6 should be paying them, right? They essentially were an elevator operator, gas station attendant, or restroom attendant who offers you soap. What kind of job is that? I can do this myself. It’s more of an inconvenience that you’re even there in the first place, and now I have to pay for a service I don’t even need? Sure, there’s lots of places where a valet is an important job, but not here.
@Juggy00

As a current Valet I can confirm a lot of this is spot on. Joyriding however is not an everyday thing. But importantly more is tips. You tip a valet as you would tip a waiter at a restaurant. Don’t be the person with the “why should I tip them if they’re just doing their job” excuse.

I have to valet my car when I visit my aunt. She lives in a condo, gated community in Philly. Cars I've driven there: 1994 Miata (in not great shape), 1987 Corolla (decent for a 1987 Corolla), and a 2008 Yaris (lowered, dirty, and covered in dings and dents). At most I've tipped the valet $2. We've even been told not to tip them there because they're "taken care of pretty well". I think it's different when it's a place people live rather than an event or restaurant. Like, I'm just here to see my aunt... I already had to pay tolls and gas to get here lol look at my car I'm not made of money. Even my aunt drives a 2011 Camry. However, there are plenty of Porsches, high-end Mercs, Bentleys, Maseratis, and I've seen the occasional supercar. But the people that live there don't have to valet, only guests.

Had to deal with gangsters make deals with cops, had car catch fire, had a gun fall over from under the seat, had big bag of coke on the floor and did joy ride every cool car a little. If you want your car really taken care of tip your valet $20 and you will be golden. As far as driving stick it’s really a rare skill nowadays. My coworker at a company party caught the valet's joy riding my car last year around several city blocks. He knew I was already inside so he snagged cell phone video of it hauling ass by them and burning out but the nail in the coffin was that the idiots didn't bother to turn off my dash cam so I had the whole ordeal on video. When did tips become mandatory and not an optional gratuity for good service?

I guess it's a useful function in some places. I have no desire to ever use a valet service. I don't want a stranger driving off in my car. I will always take the option of not using the valet. If that isn't an option, it's a place I don't really want to go anyway. Its also one of the first driving jobs to be automated. I'm not knocking what you do. Some people like the service.

I used to valet in downtown Brooklyn. The whole tipping thing is true 100%. If you tipped me on dropoff, I would make sure that your car was at the front and shielded with other cars to make sure nothing happened to it.

I did valet in my early to mid 20s in St. Louis for a private company doing events and then a casino for several years. Lots of crazy stories, interesting celebrities, and shitty people. He is correct on the $20 tip for good spots; That was always the going rate. $5 was always a solid tip but a lot of the regulars in the casino seemed to take the service for granted.

"They sued us because we had deeper pockets". No. They sued you because you failed to prevent the theft of a vehicle that was your responsibility.

Anecdotal story: my brother was helping a woman who was a in a three car accident until a drunk driver ran through the scene of the accident and struck three people, including my brother. One person died, my brother was in critical condition with several broken bones and ribs. The drunk driver had insurance and also a suspended license. The woman in the initial accident had a bigger insurance policy, so in terms of a payout, it made more sense for my brother's attorney to sue her insurance instead. So no, this guy's story makes perfect sense.

That is true but we did not cause the damage. They had arrested the people who directly caused the accident.

@@ValetStories All due respect I'd argue that a moment of carelessness facilitated the event that caused the damage, but legal proceedings became more about monetary gains than morals a long long time ago.

As former valet another for me personally the best thing about it (worth just as much if not more than the money) was they opportunity to NETWORK in my city there were countless college students that immediately left for other cities to begin working because the were so tight with the consultants, executives, etc that would come through. Also although the business in general is interesting, you experience can wildly differ if your a hotel, restaurant, condo, etc valet driver. Definitely is a crazy business though.

I worked as valet at Charlotte Intl. Airport last year and jeez worst tipped was Cam Newton, biggest snob in his Lambo Urus who gives you this shitty look like he’s above you. Also we werent allowed to keep personal cash tips there which was bullshit.

My sister valeted her car at a hotel in New Orleans with friends. It stayed in valet until Sunday when they were ready to leave. The valet went to get the car, then came back and said he had to drive them to her car because it was stick shift and he didn’t know stick shift. The valet that knew stick shift didn’t come in until later. Not sure if he got a tip or not.

My valet question: nowadays, cars are more complicated than before, at least in my opinion. Many have weird gear changing situations and settings - I feel like I need a week in a rental car before I know what the heck I’m doing with it (and I sometimes joke that I wish Doug DeMuro was with me to explain to me how everything worked). How hard is it to be presented with a random car and have to instantly know how to put it in gear and safely operate it? Does it just take time and practice to get used to all the most common models?

As a valet supervisor at one of the Indian casinos in SoCal all this is true except we get .30 cent tips all the time. The losers give us their slot tickets with .01-.50 all the time they fold them up hella times so by the time we realize how much it is THEY GONE! Hahaha never a dull moment tho
