Little Big Man is a terrific novel, a lot of fun. Also, I was not disappointed by Streets of Laredo; in fact, I liked it almost as much as Lonesome Dove. It's a sad book, elegiac and contains some of McMurtry's best writing.

I'll likely get to both of those this month, so that's great to know! Thank you.

Great list! Brock is adorable, heard him whistling toward the end. I, too, enjoyed Stoner very much. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Streets of Laredo.

Brock is the best dog I've ever had. Stoner was so good that I read it twice. I'll probably start Streets of Laredo as soon as I finish Texasville, which I'm enjoying very much.

I have read nearly all of those, especially the Lonesome Dove quartet of books, and I can say you are in for some entertaining reading.

I'm really glad that the June on the Range event rekindled my interest in westerns -- especially in Larry McMurtry.

Blood Meridian is rooted in Western conventions but I think it's more distant to the genre than you know. I've seen it called anti-western before and agree with it. The novel is so focused on theodicy, violence and the idea of the will to power among other things that the setting is not too important to the overall story. He did an amazing job with that particular aspect however. The trail taken by the Glanton Gang is incredibly well described, Cormac actually walked it himself.

That's interesting stuff. Comments like this are what keep me engaged with Booktube. I had no idea he walked that trail himself.

I really need to get to Blood Meridian. The Searchers is so great! 🤠

I'm giving Blood Meridien another try next year. About 15 years ago, they did a repertory showing of The Searchers that I took my kids to see. They loved it too, even though they don't genesis like westerns.

Great list. I don't think I have read any of those either, so there are definitely some I'll be looking to add to my tbr as well. I've read the first two Dark Tower books and was not impressed at all. I really WANT to love them, but so far they haven't hooked me yet! Really want to read The Searchers as I love the movie as well and read Empire of the Summer Moon a year or so ago. So far I've read two Louis L'Amour books for June on the Range, but I (never having read any L'Amour) started with Sackett's Land having NO IDEA it wasn't a Western!!! Lol 🤦♂️🤦♂️ Followed it up with War Party though. Gonna be starting Lonesome Dove in a few days. Thanks for another great video!

I think you'll have a hard time finding a western better than Lonesome Dove. The problem with Stephen King is that he's just so all over the place. But I've been a fan long enough that I feel like I should give him the benefit of a doubt and read that whole series.

Name a month. I am on the range. Lonesome Dove is loved by both women and men. Not so for Blood Meridian. Butchers Crossing is excellent as is the Searchers. Little Big Man as a novel is pretty good. Sisters Brothers is a good novel. The Streets of Laredo is superb. It is almost as good as The Dove. It is definitely the second best book of the series. Take it from me I was a cowboy when I was 3 years old to 6 in the 1950's.

Very cool. Although I do know some women who are cool toward Lonesome Dove, but I don't know how they feel about Blood Meridien.
