I would argue a few of the MCU films actually have already reached that. Sure, they're not generally as dark and gritty as that movie was, but in terms of just being good movies. Though the Marvel movies could do with a few more interesting villains. It's funny that their movie villains are generally a bit meh, but they have amazing villains in their tv shows xD
@jmparker78

What amuses me is that after literally decades of critics and audiences complaining that most superhero movies gave us a charismatic, fun villain, they mostly gave us bland, vanilla, uninvolving heroes, as if they expected us to root for the hero just because they were the heroes. This is true of all the Reeve-era Superman movies, all the Burton/Schumacher Batman movies, the Raimi Spider-Man movies, and I would argue even The Dark Knight. Now we get movies with dynamic, interesting heroes, and what's peoples' takeaway from that? "The villains aren't interesting enough!!"

I haven't seen many black and white movies because I just don't seek old movies out to watch (I'm more of a gamer if my profile icon isn't obvious). But I can say that after seeing "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" in my AP Government class, it is easily in my top 10 movies. I loved how well written the political system and corruption were, I loved the scene where the camera just followed Mr. Smith twirling with his hat, I loved how good a job everyone did of making the main character look more and more exasperated as the movie went on. It seemed to me like what I often hear about the older eras of video games; without lifelike technology and strongly established formulas, each movie had to find ways to work within it's boundaries, and that's when great art is made.

He realizes how much the world has, but the world wants nothing to do with him. He goes on a journey, basically just becoming increasingly depressed. Finally when he gets what he asked for, he just can't bear the sadness anymore. There are moments of happiness, but it's what the monster does that breaks my heart.

Does Return of the King really count as a sequel though? It's unlike most sequels as it wasn't produced after the first film was released and became popular, the trilogy was all made at the same time. The movies, like the books, are really just one story segmented into three parts due to its length. Return of the King really is one long climax for the Lord of the Rings, it's not a stand-alone sequel.

The Trilogy was NOT all made at the same exact time, look it up.
@melodyclark1944
7 жыл бұрын
Not the exact same time but they were done filming the last one before the first one was released. "Principal photography for all three films was conducted concurrently in many locations within New Zealand's conservation areas and national parks between 11 October 1999, and 22 December 2000, a period of 438 days." Even disregarding that the three of them are very much intended to be one story.

11:50 Am I the only one who likes batman returns every bit as much as batman 89, maybe even liking returns better? I know some people don't like the penguin here because "it's not accurate to the comics" but I really liked Danny devito as the more deformed penguin in its own right. I also liked that the penguin was taking over Gotham legitimately, making batman powerless against him for the majority of the film and even going on to frame batman for murder. Don't get returns it rarely get spoke about.
@CD-hk6bg

For the record, I don't think returns should be on the list, dark Knight is better in my opinion, I just don't get why it's never spoke about and why it's glanced over as if 89 is infinitely better and that returns is just mediocre or something

I used to love Returns as a kid. But as an adult, I see a lot of problems w/ it. If it was released as a new movie in this decade, people would immediately point out how much Batman sucks as a hero in it. He just watches a woman fall to her death even though he has a glider, gets his Batmobile easily hacked by remote control, and accidentally reveals his secret identity to a villain in a party. The title also might as well be "Penguin & Catwoman" instead.
@ShinSeikiEvan

I liked it a lot, but people I've noticed things about it that now irritate me. A) The mousy secretary suddenly gets supervillain ninja skills from nowhere after falling from a building. B) This movie started the dumb "two or more villains" trend that DC can never get away from. Usually neither villain gets the development they deserve. C) The Penguin deviated from the source material too much; basically giving him Killer Croc's backstory. Max Shreck wasn't needed and The Penguin should have filled that role as the shifty aristocrat.

i think people hate on return of the jedi too much because its the third film in the main trilogy but honestly i think its better than a new hope with better action and higher steaks with Luke having to deal with the horrible truth about his father and trying to get him back. and the ending with him just wailing on vader with pure rage is just perfect as he reliezes he will be just like his dad if he kills him so he lays down his lightsaber saying (if my memory is right) that he is a jedi like his father before him and wont kill him. the original trilogy is the best example of films that can show and not tell like when Luke takes vader's helmet off or with Luke near the end of the first death star battle when Kenobi tells him to use the force and Luke just by facial expressions shows how he isn't sure about relaying on the force and trys to do it with the computer. though i do like empire more than return

I think that Kung Fu Panda 2 and How to Train Your Dragon 2 deserve to be remembered as good sequels. I think in some ways those films that might excel them above their original movies. For one thing they both feel less formulaic and are far grander adventures than their predecessors. And both have some well done darker moments: Master Thundering Rhino's hammer resting in a crater in the courtyard of Shen's palace, the death of Velka's Bewilderbeast and Draco's taking control of the Berk dragons. Not to mention how dignified both films deal with the death of a parent.

That depends on how he approaches the sequels. If he does the same thing over again like the first Avatar then yes that would be a bad thing. However, judging from his previous works he does have and history of making the sequels different from what came before. Cameron is a master at knowing his audience and what they want out of a movie. So for me I think the Avatar sequels will be approached differently and not retread the same ground.

@mentaya11
5 жыл бұрын
@@banterclaus3528 Agreed. People can tell what's real, even when they can't tell why something looks off. I think the best movies mesh the two. Not everything has to be practical. Sure, it's great to be able to say 'that was real', but it's not always necessary. On the flip side, well made practical effects often look and feel more real than cgi ones. The best, in my opinion, take the best of both worlds. LOTR, switching from makeup and mail clad orcs to sweeping army shots is a good example, or the original Jurassic Park. Another great example were the first few Harry Potter movies. The Basilisk, at least the first 20 feet or so, was a practical effect, as was the animatronic for Fawkes or the moving chess pieces. On the other hand, they tried a practical effect for the candles in the great hall, but after problems with dripping wax, they switched that to cgi. When you try to do just cgi, as in the Hobbit, it just doesn't work right.

i love Back to the Future sequels, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is also a great sequel. This is a perfect list. I know that most people don't really like The Hobbits but i think it's a good prequel trilogy for The Lord of the Ring...and i must say, i'm genuinely sad after the third film because i know this is the end for Middle Earth movies

I was hoping that no, that he'd shed some light on some unknown movie instead of pleasing fanboys that would burn this channel if it wasn't 1st. And putting it over GF2 only because it "pleases a wider audience", then he'd have put toy story 3, because all the people that watched it as a kid, went to watch it now, so it pleased kids and adults in their 20-30s.

The empire strike back literally changed the cinema scene forever. So yeah, it's a pretty big deal. It's not just about fanboys, it's legit one of the best movie of all time. It fully deserves it's place as number 1. Godfather is indeed a movie with a targeted audience where as Star wars can be watched and enjoyed by anyone which yes is actually a plus for a movie.

I really think you should have put Kung Fu Panda 2 somewhere on the list and here's why: You praised a lot of these sequels for doing something that outdo it's seemengly perfect predecessor, But, Kung Fu Panda 2 did not only that, but it did with an idea that seemed bad. You've said it yourself in Dreaworksuary that you didn't believe the idea of a fat Panda played by Jack Black learning Kung Fu was gonna bomb and yet it surprised you with how good it was. Considering that was a Kid's movie, it would be very easy for the sequel to be an uninspired cash-grab. yet I was superior to the original in everyway, with a much more intimidading villain who was a PEACOCK OF ALL THINGS, and strong emotional moments that even managed to make the audience cry.

It's not "SJW propaganda", but it's absolutely a feminist film (strong female lead, strong female supporting cast, no "male gaze" camera work (except when subverting the trope), themes of women being more than baby incubators, implication that men "killed the world", etc.). It's only because the internet is full or morons that "feminist film" was interpreted as "SJW propaganda".
