I hate to have to go against True Belief but Wool Is NOT Warm when wet! I dressed in wool for years when I was an ice climber, and when I was a winter sea kayaker here in Maine, and please believe me when I say that the wet wool I wore was not warm! Is wet wool warmer than wet cotton? Probably a tiny bit but you would need NASA level instruments to measure the difference. So if you are out there sea kayaking in the cold and start to shiver don't splash water on your woolen clothing thinking it will make you warmer! 😥 As for the life saving benefits of warm liquids let me share a hypothermia story with you. Many years ago I decided one warm August day to practice my roll. Rather than trek to the ocean I decided to use a local lake for my practice site. So I paddled to a remote corner of the lake where I would not be bothering anyone and began practicing my roll. About five minutes later I glanced down the lake and saw that a rain squall was roaring down the lake. So I landed on a beach and sought cover under the dense cover of a clump of spruce. My upper body was already wet from rolling and by the time the rain squall passed over my lower body was soaked as well. Despite the mid 70F temp I began to shiver violently so I grabbed my thermos of hot coffee and chugged it down. The shivering just got worse! As the symptoms of severe hypothermia became more severe I realized I'd better act quickly so I jumped into my kayak and began paddling for all I was worth. About a mile later I had generated enough body heat through exertion and my symptoms vanished. This is not to say that a hot drink may not have some benefit but, like wet wool, it is simply not the cure all folks sometimes make it out to,be.

Luke, To add to your hot beverage tip. Make the beverage a hot sugary drink, in a hypothermic condition your body will be able to more easily and quickly convert the sugar into fuel when its in the hypothermic state. Caffeine can result in an increased blood flow which can have an adverse effect of circulating the blood into the extremities prematurely and more rapidly thus cooling the core. Warm sugary drinks are the recommended go to at present. Mind you with the rate of medical discoveries these days this advice may be incorrect by the time I print it.....hahahaha

Love the videogeaphy and your narration, easy watch😊 been coaching and paddling 28years and i learned something new so thanks for the questions you planted in my mind regarding opposite push on footpeg, gonna play with that (although do it in forward paddling in long boats never tried for over side rotation) 😊😊😊

Great tips! With the thermo tip though i ve found that bying a good thermo makes a huge difference in maintaining the original temprature no matter the environment for at least 12 hours. Cheers from Greece! (Great kayaking destination!)

This couldn't hurt: Keep some chemical hand warmers and/or the larger body warmers in the dry bag with your change of clothes.

Great channel! Living in Central Mass, I need to get off my butt and do some of these classes you're showing. I own a Stellar s18s surfski, which is very stable. Obviously can't roll it, but other than that, how critical is having a kayak vs surfski for the classes you attend? Thanks for the inspiration!

Dan Hunneyman not at all. There’s lots of surf ski specific events you can attend all around the country. Events just like the ones I show. Now if you wanted to go to those I show, then yes, you would need a sea kayak. All events are great, but don’t let that stop you from attending surf ski events!

Can you recommend a neoprene flask sleeve that fits big flasks? I spent ages looking, and could only find for smaller flasks, not 1 litre and above, or specific to eg Sigg which doesn't fit my thermos.

I do not know what you mean by 'Ikea bag' that keeps things from moving around, but a further step to secure your gear is to load your gear bags as wide and long and as low as you can, and even if the bags double as float bags, as mine do, I put a second inflated float bag on top, fore and aft, so that the gear is held down, and doesn't move around. Keeping the weight plastered as close to the hull centerline as possible helps with stability and maneuvering, and if needed a timely roll.

The Ikea bag is a reusable tote bag from the company Ikea and is made from polypropylene. It's basically the same material that a plastic tarp is made from.

Tried the tip for pushing with the opposite foot when rotating to the side. It felt really good, I can see how it gives more ability to rotate and open up the hips to the side the paddle is working on. I can't remember any coach I have had referring to foot pressure when teaching side strokes or even stern rudders. I will definitely remember this and pass it on.

Turning on a bike means pushing the outside handlebar as opposed to pulling the inside handlebar. Pushing also maintains weight control on the inside of the apex.
