The Flame of the Forest tree (Butea monosperma) is a medium to large-sized deciduous tree with a short trunk, rough gray bark, and an umbrella-shaped crown:
Trunk: Crooked and twisted
Bark: Rough and gray
Crown: Broad and umbrella-shaped with lacy foliage
Leaves: Thick, velvety, and pale green with three leaflets that are 4 to 8 inches wide
Flowers: Bright orange-red and beak-shaped, borne in clusters about 6 inches long with blooms about 1 inch long
Tabebuia trees are flowering plants in the Bignoniaceae family that are known for being cultivated as ornamental trees. They can range in height from 15 to over 100 feet and have trumpet-shaped flowers that come in many colors, including white, yellow, pink, and purple. The flowers attract hummingbirds and bees, and the trees are popular in Latin America.
Tabebuia rosea
Also known as the pink poui or rosy trumpet tree, this neotropical tree can grow up to 98 feet tall and 3 feet in diameter at breast height. It has oppositely arranged leaves with five leaflets on each stalk, and large, showy flowers that are 5-8 centimeters long. In Costa Rica, it's also known as roble de sabana, which means "savannah oak", because of its wood's resemblance to oak and because it often remains in deforested areas.
Tabebuia palmeri
This medium-sized deciduous tree can grow to be 7-10 meters tall and 6 meters wide, and produces pink trumpet-shaped flowers in late winter and spring. It's drought tolerant, can tolerate most soil types, and is relatively resistant to pests and disease.
Tabebuia aurea
Also known as the Caribbean trumpet tree, this tree has compound, hand-shaped leaves with five to seven oblong leaflets that can be green or silver-green. It grows well in full sun and acidic to slightly alkaline soil, and is tolerant of drought and salt.
Tabebuia heterophylla
Also known as the pink trumpet tree, this tree has palmately compound, green leaves that are evergreen for most of the year, but may be briefly deciduous when new leaves emerge. It produces showy pink or white, bell-shaped blooms in the spring and summer, followed by long, slender seedpods.
