For example, I saw the Mask of Mirrors book mentioned on a ton of channels I was following last year (I started feeling some FOMO), but none of those channels have nearly as many subscribers as Elliot Brooks. That said, it’s wonderful that you’re brining attention to these series on your channel, which continues to grow for good reason 😊.

That theory is kinda true. But The Cemetery of Forgotten Books is not a fantasy or sci fi series, and it is a very popular series of books outside of the genre. Or at least, the first book, The Shadow of the Wind is. 🙂
@danbe6280

@@PetrikLeo You're right, technically "The Cemetery of Forgotten Books" is more historical fiction than fantasy no matter the fantasy elements it has, the series is not so well known specially in the English speaking world, it is a weird series, every now and then the 1st book is in the mouth of many more people than normal and then it comes back to its hidden status, as I don't know as many series as you do (that's why I mentioned TCoFB), and to be honest your coverture of indie/hidden gems is the main reason I enjoy your (and other booktubers) videos. I watched to see if it was mentioned. It is so criminally underrated it blows my mind honestly. The follow up series The Aspect Emperor is great as well. @PetrikLeo
2 жыл бұрын
@@yellowcityflyfishing I haven't read his books yet but I have a feeling it's because the series is so insanely bleak and nihilistic. At least from what I've heard, those who love and dislike the series both agreed that it is an incredibly grim and dark series, and quite a lot of readers these days tend to shy away from reading something too dark. I haven't read it, so this is just based on conjecture.
@yellowcityflyfishing
2 жыл бұрын
@@PetrikLeo I agree somewhat, though I don’t necessarily think those complaints are fully warranted. The original trilogy certainly has some dark moments and has all the usual suspects that tend to make things hard for some to read. Violence and rape/sexual assault, though I don’t think it appears at a level that makes it any worse than something like asoiaf, the first law, malazan, broken empire… The first trilogy for the most part works as a stand alone and I think it is far less nihilistic than the Aspect Emperor books. I think a lot of people could read the original trilogy and be satisfied with it as just a trilogy. The gritty nihilism is stepped up in the aspect emperor with shades of Cormac McCarthy and Tolkien being flipped on his head. That said, I’m itching for some of the more popular booktubers like yourself to give it a try. I’ll be ready to chat you up when you do give it a go and I will probably reread it when you do give it a try.

Great recommendations and quite a few books that end up on my reading list. I actually began reading Janny Wurts' series back in the day when it began to be published, and the more or less enjoyed the first couple of books. I think it was by Grand Conspiracy, however, that her prose style began to feel way too flowery and purple for my taste - I can't recall quite why, but I remember being actually angry about it. Which was a shame, because the plotline was quite fascinating at the time (although nowadays it would perhaps feel less fresh, I fear). I really enjoyed the Empire Trilogy she wrote with Raymond E.
