A great list, but too much emphasis on the modern. Try: ROBBERY; (1967); A factional re-enactment of the Great Train Robbery Featuring Stanley Baker and a theme to die for. PAYROLL; (1961); An excellent movie with a fine cast that pushed violence and salaciousness as far as censors would allow. Still one of the grittiest heist scenes with another top-line jazz theme. THE LADYKILLERS; (1955); Black comedy overdrive with a cast to die for. A terrific heist, but a mesmerising set of consequences. JIGSAW; (1962); A piece perfect police procedural. Jack Warner reprises his copper's role but now at a detective level. THE LONG ARM; (1956); meaning `the long arm of the law'. An insight into crime and discovery featuring Jack Hawkins. GIDEON'S DAY; (1958); A day in the life of Scotland Yard's Commander Gideon. Another outing for the great Jack Hawkins. OLIVER TWIST; (1948); David lean brings Dickens' Victorian crime novel to life with Fagin the fence and Sykes the murderer. HARRY BROWN; (2009); Still no escaping a rather grizzled Michael Caine, almost reprising his vengeful Jack Carter role. THE DEADLY GAME; (2013); a London city heist movie featuring Gabriel Byrne and more double-crosses than you can eat. SWEENEY; (2012); the Sweeney remake that's actually as daft as a brush but too good to miss, featuring our very own Ray Winstone. Check out the gun battle in Trafalgar Square. Classic.

I guess Ipcress File is spy but I’d still put it at the top 5. Rockenrolla is missing. Soundtrack to Long GF is one of the all time greats. The theme song seems like it should not date well but it plays so well to Hoskins entry and the final scene that it doesn’t age at all. Legend doesn’t work for me. They seemed confused on how to tell the story. Tom Hardy needs a producing partner he can trust who has good taste. Right now I don’t think he trusts anyone & he chooses poor scripts when he produces.
Harold Shand is the most authentic and frightening characters even to grace our screens, every word Bob Hoskins says is pure gold 😮

My Dad was in the Met Police in the 70s & 80s and didn't like this film as he thought it glorified villains who he had direct experience of and who he knew to be pretty evil characters. I always took that to mean the film got its representation of real villains accurate. I don't think it glorifies them but you do have to make the characters sympathetic to a degree otherwise you won't care what happens to them. Bob Hoskins did an amazing job in this film. Ultimately Shand is a frightening monster who no right minded person would want to have to deal with in real life but Hoskins manages to evince some sympathy for him nonetheless
