1- look for the glow. Best way to do this is with the sun in front. But go both directions for different perspective.
2- look for texture/luster
3- look at the shapes
4- look for colors
5- bring water boots/shoes
6- flashlights are great to check transparency
7- steel knife for scratch testing or use a quartz rock which you know is 7 hardness to check for softer material
8- rock hammer, screwdriver, chisel, garden rake are great for extracting specimens
9- don't forget to pack some snacks and water
10- bring something to carry rocks
11- if you leave your squirt bottle, use your bucket to scoop some water and toss it onto the dry/dirty rocks
12- bring a rock and mineral id book, of your area, with you to help with the unknowns...big help!
