Ushio's death wasn't just heartbreaking to me, it was soul breaking. The protagonist having lost the love of his life to child birth had finally found happiness again when reunited with his daughter. It was heartwarming to see him find a reason to live again. Then the illness that caused her mother to die found its way to Ushio. The whole scene made me a blubbering mess. I had to briefly stop the show to get the crying out of my system. Definitely not something I will forget any time soon.

Hida Shoko from Happy Sugar Life. Man so many characters in that anime have it very rough but pretty much all the characters that die deserve it. Shoko was the one person from that anime that did not deserve to die. The anime is about a girl named Matsusoka Satou, referred to as Satou-Chan by the characters. She was raised by her aunt growing up as both her parents were dead. Her aunt was psycho and had a very warped perception of love which unfortunately also turned Satou into a psycho with her own warped perception of love. One day Satou meets a young girl named Shio Kobe after Shio was abandoned in an alley by her mother after the mom slapped her and feared she was becoming a monster like her abusive husband. Satou and Shio live together in an apartment secretly and have a “happy sugar life” where it’s just the two of them. Shoko was Satou’s best friend but when she found Satou living together with Shio the two got into a major fight. It’s played over a beautiful and honestly heartbreaking song. At the end of the confrontation Shoko promises Satou she won’t go the police and tell them what she saw, but Satou doesn’t believe it and stabs Shoko to death. If you can handle a dark storyline and want a short anime to binge I highly recommend Happy Sugar Life. It’s only 12 episodes so you can probably watch the whole series within a day.

I cried my eyes out when Ceasar died in JoJo. That was the only 2nd time anime made me cry. The first was when Kickcyho from, Samurai 7 died protecting the village. He was going to marry his crush, but sadly obviously it didn't happen. What was even more touching was the thought of mind over matter. Earlier in the series he attempts to lift up a really large weapon with 2 arms and 100% power, but couldn't do it. In the last episode he's in he lifts it up with one arm and even though he's riddled with bullets from earlier and hurt successfully does it.

Without watching, FMA Nina and Alexander is DEFINITELY on this list. Especially the original series one. Edit: how THE HELL WAS THIS NOT ON HERE? Though the other gut-wrenching one from this series was, so I'll let it slide.

Escanor's death from 7 Deadly Sins is one of the most tragic deaths in anime history for me, as well as the death of Ginshi Shirazu from Tokyo Ghoul: RE!

I haven’t seen most of these anime’s, so I’m not as well versed in how emotionally damaging their deaths are. I have seen Grave of the Fireflies however, and yeah…I have still not recovered after having watched it for the first time almost a year ago. Edit: I just got done with Code Geass and while not as devastating as Grave of the Fireflies IMO, Shirley’s death (and I might have to add Euphy’s death) was incredibly devastating.

I probably got 20 minutes into Grave of the Fireflies before I went "Nope. I know where this is going and my psyche can't take it." I have no regrets skipping it, which I kind of hate saying. That would have been too much for me.

Unpopular opinion and probably going to get a lot of hate for this, but as sad and depressing as Shirley's death was in Code Geass, Rolo's death hit me even harder. I wanted to hate the guy so badly, but to see him save Lelouch as well as that heartbreaking monologue, and then die thinking of Lelouch as his brother was too much to handle. Shirley's death made me tear up, but Rolo's death made my heart bleed.
@kingjamos2422

While it certainly was more painful for me, Rolo's death was a surprise. Not the death itself, but by how emotionally painful it was to watch. He killed someone we grew to love in an episode that came off as a filler episode, which shocked the hell out of me. I hated him and wanted him to die so badly... until it happened. In the end, he was just an emotionally destroyed child that found someone he could call brother and his actions were merely the cry of a jealous child wanting to protect his new place in life. Almost all of his actions he took were for the sake of the family he created, but yeah, he had a quite a brother complex. Even after the terrible thing that he had done, even as much as I hated him, he died to save his brother that he loved so much.

I feel like we all forgot Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. God, that was one of the most unexpected and heartbreaking deaths in all of anime, no, media. That death really establishes the importance of music in any emotional scene. I always forget, but Cyperpunk: Edgerunners is still an anime, with one of the most soul-crushing endings of all time.

I didn't even watch Devil Man Crybaby cause it WAYYY too much for me to handle, but curiosity got the better of me when I stumbled upon the specific scene of her the guys and their horrific end and I kid you not, it felt like there was an anchor on my spirit. I sobbed after watching that because it's like even if it's fiction, it's just a reminder of how vile and evil humans can really get. Provoked or not. I was a little traumatized after that needless to say.

I don't care what anyone says. Ai should be number 1. The fact she was dying and not even mad at her killer was just heartbreaking. Mix that with her incredible VA and her remembering the killers name, just awful. So many different variables here that just break our hearts with her death. Once her star went out, I lost it.
