I don't think Steve Harris gets enough credit for his incredibly energetic bass lines. Can you imagine how exhausted he must be after one of their live shows? Yet he's been bringing for decades. That sort of explains his reputation of demanding that everyone else continue to bring it every single show.

From what I've heard his secret is that he plays with an incredibly light touch the entire time. I've never heard it come from the man's mouth so I can't confirm but it's the most sensible thing to me considering the stamina his songs require.

@@unamericano Nicko made a joke on the Flight 666 tour DVD "He doesn't smack the shit out of his strings, he tickles 'em! I have it on good authority he's a good tickler" and with how frequently Steve's strings are changed, combined with all of his equipment's settings, I'm inclined to believe he doesn't hit his strings hard at all. He usually plays very close to the bridge, and the strings at that position don't have alot of "Give" like if you were playing up past the pickups. He's a phenomenal player and one of my biggest influences as a Bass player.

I know this video is about the bass guitar but it's amazing that in the mid-70s, a couple of decades after the "invention" of electric guitar, musicians had mastered it in such a way that very little was left to be developed in decades to come. Of course, there came Malmsteen, Van Halen, Hendrix with their own creative contributions but most of the technique had been under control in the 70s. If you watch a video of the early Maiden gigs or other heavy metal bands (when they were playing in what seem to be pubs), they were ready and rocking.
