In America "Dear Old Donegal" is the quintessential immigrant tune. It's not specifically about Irish history. It's about being successful in America, but being homesick for Ireland & dreaming of going back home to Ireland to share their success w/ loved ones. My grandfather loved this song. I would listen to it w/ him, but the entire time I didn't realize what it was about & that he must have been homesick himself. Broke my heart when I finally realized what the song was about, but by then he was gone.

Theres a old Irish song, sung by mothers during the Anglo-Boer war (1899 - 1902) where mothers sing about wanting the Boers to beat the English, and be free of tyranny, but knowing that the cost of the Boers winning would be the lives of Irish sons forced to go fight the Boers who never did anything against the Irish for the English.... As a Boer, I always believed there was a kinship between the Irish and Boers of South Africa.

What I always found wild about Amhrán an bhFiann as the national anthem is when you look up the laws establishing it they are all referring to the English version of the song (which it was originally wrote in) but for reasons I dont quite get we only use the Irish version nowadays. I'm not opposing it in Irish, just odd that we dont teach both parts. I moved to Canada where they make a big thing about it being bilingual but we dont try it or just let it be used in either language. Strange stuff.
