Hey Wiley, could you give some insight into power cat vs sail. Im my mind sail makes alot more sense for long distance cruising, but i have little to know live aboard experience. Thanks

It all really depends on your goals and objectives. They both have their pros and cons. The biggest con in my opinion to a power catamaran is the cost of fuel.

I know this is an old post... But to be balanced, there is more to the cost equation. For starters, most sailboats end up motoring 50%+ of the time, in particular in light winds, when going upwind as well as when in channels, moorings, anchoring, etc. Second, when below hull speed, sail cats and power cats consume reasonably similar amounts of fuel. Third, there is a 7 to 10 year sail and rigging replacement cycle. Maintenance of the engines costs very similar. Factor all that in and for most sailors, the cost advantage of sailing is much less than you may think. If you are crossing oceans, there is a benefit to sail cats. Coastal cruising...it is more of a "eco friendly feel good" and a nuisance due to the 64' bridge clearance issues. Power cats give you a speed alternative when needed to avoid weather, etc albeit at a fuel cost. Also, in total, fuel costs are among the least significant costs of large boat ownership unless you are crossing oceans. Wiley, I know you know more than your brief reply indicates.

would you suggest a sail or power catamaran in a location like cape town for simple coastal cruises?

Really depends on your personal preference.

How hard would it be to put a mast on one of these babies? Could Just cats do it in a week?
