There are so many training myths existing in striking martial arts.
1. Lifting weights makes you slower.
2. More muscle = more strength.
3. Strength training makes you more powerful.
4. The harder you train, the harder you fight.
The truth is that nearly all sports have these myths until the sports became huge. You will be hard pressed to find top professional athletes in mainstream sports without an athletic development coach.
This is otherwise known as "strength and conditioning" coach. Top coaches are now paid a lot of money to optimize athletes even at the collegiate level.
The field of sport science is the field of human optimization, filled with the world's brightest minds on how to build athletes to win olympic medals and world championships.
Even though all sports have historically met this field with some resistance, for whatever reason, combat sports has more of it and is much slower than others to seek and understand.
During my time away from the computer-a forced hiatus due to injuries-I studied the work of the most respected athletics coaches in the west. That eventually led me to a mentorship under one of the most influential sport scientists of all time, Dr. Yessis.
Around the same time, I also learned that greatest of all time fighters like Giorgio Petrosyan and Vasyl Lomachenko have long been using well thought out programs and athletics coaches to optimize their training. In Muay Thai, Buakaw's career was saved by a physical therapy doctor who introduced him to weight training, and together they founded Banchamek.
True athletic development isn't a short cut or a "hack." Long term results will always require a lot of work over a long period of time. A truly great athlete is built over time. However, a good training program filled with sound principles will help you move faster towards a very hard goal.
Don Heatrick is a special case because he has been in the trenches as an athlete and spent his life towards studying athletic development from the greats as well. I can assure you that his training principle and programs are well thought out and filled with both experience and research.
I am promoting Heatrick's great work because he deserves more recognition in the striking community. If this interests you, please give his work some of your time.
