Jazz at the Pawnshop, OMG thank you so much! I first heard this in a Hi-Fi dealership back in the late 1970's but never knew or couldn't remember the name. I have searched for decades to rediscover this recording. This was an unexpected gift to me!

I heard a song twice within a close proximity when I was a young kid. Never heard it again. Didn’t know the name of the song or the artist. I only remembered they sang something about Maxwell. I thought maybe it was just an old Maxwell House coffees commercial. Fast forward 20 years. I’m at a bar looking for a song on the jukebox, when I see a song called Maxwell’s Silver Hammer by the Beatles. My heart leapt into my throat. I pressed play and BOOM! Twenty years of searching lol It’s a great feeling

Great LPs! Want a laugh! My father bought me my first drum set when I was in 5th grade for Christmas. As I waited for the excitement of Christmas morning to slow so I could que up Alice Cooper, The Killer LP. My father calmly walked in took it off the turntable and put on Take Five! Turned to me and said “ there, now learn how to play!” And keep that shit off my turntable! Thanks for the memory my friend.

When I first got into audio the go-to audiophile record, for dealers trying to impress would be customers, was Sheffield Labs vinyl Dave Grusin's Discovered Again. When I got back into audio years later it had been replaced by Patricia Barber's Café Blue. Sound quality on Jazz at the Yawnshop is top notch but just too boring for me. I do agree that, to some extent, Kind of Blue is THE jazz album for people who don't like jazz. But for me Kenny Burrell's Midnight Blue is even more accessible. Not one offending note on that one and the whole album just flows and grooves.

It always makes me chuckle a bit when someone makes a blanket statement, "I don't like jazz". The reason why is, jazz comes in so many forms that are so disparate from each other, they actually sound like different genres. Sure, the albums that were listed in this vid all sound like what the vast majority of people would point to as being jazz. But then you have things like, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Brand X, Return to Forever, which can be as heavy as any metal. Or chamber jazz, like Oregon, Eberhard Weber, and so many artists on the ECM label, which can be so intricate, with a lot more interplay between musicians and not really swing. Or free jazz, which can sound chaotic at first glance, but upon further listening, can really swing, in a less than literal manner. Or the very recent genre of jazz-metal, which has jaw dropping musicianship, extreme complexity and heaviness. Bands like Panzerballet, Counter-World Experience, Exivious.
@hilde45

Exactly right. Same with "classical" or even "rock." When I hear someone say, "I don't like jazz," it often means, "I'm not interested in hearing something new."

So right. You have dixieland, Swing, Miles Davis, Large stage bands like Maynard Feguson and his big band. Small club ensembles. Guys like Chris Botti and Dave Koz that play a more approachable, main stream jazz. I am lucky enough to live near New York City and go to the Jazz at Lincoln Center venue where they have 3 different listening spaces. A large theater for listening to big bands, a smaller venue for more intimate performances and Dizzy's club Coca cola which is a night club setting where you can eat and drink while enjoying great jazz.

For many people there are simply not enough hours in the day to explore the amount of music you are obviously interested in, so they wouldn't even be aware of all the 'hybrid/mixed/variations of 'Jazz' you mentioned...If they really don't like the sounds they hear on 'traditional' Jazz albums like on this list, they are unlikely to explore and/or be interested in those other 'genres' IMO...'I don't like oil paintings'- you could have a chuckle and go off on a tangent with that statement too, but it's really not hard to understand...

The audiophile experience is an odd one. I really like jazz but I regularly test systems with a combination of electronica & opera. The Deutsche Grammophon Von Karajan performance of Parsifal is a fave. The prelude should blow your socks off. I've most recently heard it with a Devialet amp hooked up to Focal Kantas and the drama of those crescendos was spine tingling. Near field listening is fun and all that but sometimes far field and rattle the ceiling is all that will scratch the itch 😉 Recreating the experiemce of live opera (Wagner at that) is fundamentally different to say listening to Miles groove at a jazz club.

A record that has been in my collection for years, largely ignored but recently re-discovered and sounds just fantastic is Johnny Guitar Watsons "A Real Mother" album. Near mint vinyl copies can be found for next to nothing but it's a really open sounding recording. A genuine surprise. You have to pick what you play after it carefully so as not to be disappointed. Give it a go. Also, honourable mention to anything from Earnest Ranglin's "Below The Bassline" album. In 1959 they could produce amazing recordings with dynamics, space … air. There is literally no excuse for less, in my humble opinion. I’ll just add that Time Out should be required listening in general, at least for the jazz-curious. It’s very accessible, yet they are playing with some pretty fun rhythmic ideas throughout. The liner notes are a must-read. Just one of the best records ever.

You've just brought back memories of Take 5 when it was released and the music teacher played it in school assembly! Around 1960. I recall my disappointment that my 9 year old friends were not similarly moved.

Jazz is all over the place. Jazz that swings is, I think, the most accessible and easiest to like--it just moves you, the way a good rocker or a good funk tune moves you. "Time Out" was my gateway drug into jazz as a kid, and, later, "Kinda Blue" got me into Miles Davis. Both recordings were "instrumental" in turning me into an audiophile, they made me sit still and listen. They were prime examples of the magic of Columbia recordings of the day. Don't wanna start a war here, but I much prefer the sound of these over the Blue Note recordings of the same era. Just a generalization, and there are many Blue Note recordings that I love. The jazz I'm doing brings rock and jazz together, which makes it more palatable to folks that aren't hardcore jazz fans. Ron, I'm hoping you'll give a listen to this 'fun jazz', I'd like to get your take on it. You spoke of the first time you heard "Cinnamon Girl" on a previous post; this is an example of what Nutty does, with a Neil Young and Duke Ellington mashup: kzitem.info/news/bejne/lmewsqKBnp1onKg

Thank you for this video! Becoming an "audiophile" has spun me way more into the middle of jazz--more than I ever expected. If you like Kind of Blue (as well as recordings with amazing imaging), PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE order Sketches of Spain. I personally think it blows Kind of Blue out of the water. Apparently, Miles thought so too. But enough advice from me! I took your advice and ordered the last Louis Armstrong record available on Amazon. St. James Infirmary is epic when played on my hi-res library, so I imagine I'll love it in vinyl as well. I also ordered Jazz at the Pawn Shop. Excited for that as well...

I saw Pink Floyd in the background and expected some absolutely picks. Out of your 5, I think you nailed it, in someone else's world. Not one would be in my entertainment room. I'm refraining from making my recommendations for the simple reason of the universe division. I'll have to agree with your opening Statement, there will be disagreement on your selected 5, and with that, we go our different paths.

Mathias Eick - Midwest on ECM. Trumpet, violin, double bass, drums piano. Heavenly-beautiful music and playing (Miles Davis-esque trumpet)...but what sets it into the 'best sounding'... as well as the fabulous recording of the tuned instruments... is the drums and percussion.... the kick drum goes so DEEP and is so tastefully and delicately hefty...and all of the shimmery high end cymbals and percussion an audiophile with a need for 'tinkly bits' could wish for. Recorded by the legendary Manfred Eicher. A must have!!!!!

Ron...I accessed all your jazz recommendations thru Amazon Music and I was floored by the quality of Hi-fidelity recordings for those sessions. Just astounding! Thanks so much! By the way, whoever was the recording engineer on the Jazz at the Pawnshop session deserves special kudos for the placement of the mics! Fabulous!

My favorite audiophile CD is Homage to Duke by Dave Grusin. I used to take it with me (20 years ago) when buying HiFi gear... It helped me snag the legendary str da777es in 2000 - which I still enjoy ... doing that right now. Grab the cd if you can.

Some good choices, and yep, I was right, Time Out! was in the stack, but believe me, you do NOT necessarily need an audiophile pressing (45rpm excepted as they WILL naturally have better dynamic range than most LP's had at 33.3). That said, many Columbia recordings (and they were not the only ones when it comes to the larger labels like them back in the day) did this so a lot of times, the albums from the larger labels are plentiful, and still are, with many in good shape still and so you can easily find a good original or later reissue easily enough for reasonable coin. From the late 50's and early 60's from Columbia had so many mothers/lacquers sent out that even today with reissues, many LP's still are on mothers from the first gen tapes because a single album may have had multiple lacquers, all 1st gen, but from A-K and some have never been put into service to this day as there was some attrition during shipment back when these were first sent out back when the LP was first issued 60 some years ago so it was not uncommon for a pressing plant to get several mothers for that reason alone. Smaller labels like Blue Note could not afford to do that so reissues did differ, depending on where/when you got it. One very good reason for Time Out! is not just the audio quality as it's fantastic, but for the featured track, Take Five, though the whole album is great is that they really explore oddball time signatures but the main signature is 5/4 time, rather than the standard 4/4 time often found in jazz. It's the drum solo that Joe Morrell veered from that time signature, all the while Dave kept the initial rhythm intact by repeating the original bars over and over then at the end of the solo, they snap back to the original time signature to finish out the piece. During the drum solo, Joe ventures further and further away from the main beat and you hear him occasionally stumble before ending and finishing out the solo by snapping back to line with the rest of the quartet to finish the piece out. I can totally see why it became a hit, but can also see why some Jazz lovers despise Brubeck for being "too mainstream" but nevertheless, I like their music. BTW, Paul Desmond the alto saxophonist wrote the piece if not mistaken and delved into it further on his own LP from 1963 on RCA, Take Ten. Also, Brubeck Quartet delved further into oddball time signatures on their 1961 LP, Time Further Out, of which I also have and it's great, especially Joe's tune called More Drums that starts side 2. My copy of Take Five is mono, but still a mighty fine sounding LP, as is Time Further Out, which is also a Columbia release. Agree on Kind of Blue and both LP's are good ones to dip one's toes into Jazz and the best recommendation is see what is on both albums and explore the other musician's work, keeping an open mind and who knows, one may very well find Jazz to their liking.

Dave Grusin Discovered Again direct-to-disc is dynamic and smooth as butter. I have three copies on vinyl and one CD. Another Sheffield Lab release - Confederation -- is bluegrass direct-to-disc that always makes me smile and the acoustic instruments are beautifully presented. I heard Jazz @ Pawnshop many years ago in the audio stores. It may have sounded great, but the music didn't draw me in.
