I noticed the handheld you linked to in Amazon is actually the 700 not the 750i which is demonstrated in the video.

I've owned many Garmin's since 1998. This is a awesome unit. I bought the 700. Large yes but I got use to it fast. Last one was the 680T. I'm a USCG licensed Master Captain and would never go into the woods or on the ocean without one. I also have a ResQlink for PLB. Inreach is just not 100 % relieable to get help. Known fact.

If you had to pick one device to do a Thru Hike on the CDT what one would you take? We are in the planning phase of doing the CDT with a departure date about 31+/- March 2022!

What a joke! This is just a commercial for Garmin. How about a guy that is walking in someones manicured backyard property, next to Hydrangeas, as if he's navigating in the woods. HA!

I'm looking for a GPS with no transmitter or one that can confidently be shut off and not tracked. Any suggestions?
@mansterj
2 жыл бұрын
My basic understanding of GPS I'm certain any of them can be used to find you. Not sure if shutting them off would be enough to get rid of your signal, I wouldn't trust em. I'm going to find an affordable one to carry for emergencies while learning, but try not to rely on it so I can always be ready to ditch it along with any pesky spy phones. Compass, maps, stars, landmarks, and any other of our ancestral forms of navigation we can dig up would be the most surefire way I can think of to go out without getting lost, or seen by undesirable eyes. kzitem.info/news/bejne/2HmZp4aMm36Qd6A&ab_channel=BRIGHTSIDE

@@mansterj Pretty much the opposite is true. GPS is not two way communication, satellites blindly transmit data at precise intervals and everyone who can pick up that signal can then calculate their position based on the time it took the signal to reach where they are via triangulation. Obviously if your GPS includes some more modern features like the ability to wirelessly download map data or actual sattelite uplink technology (like Garmin's inReach service) then there is actual transmission from the device which could be used to track you, but if you get something just relying solely on a GPS signal and offline maps then it will not be able to.

@@presentfactory Well that's a bit more reassuring. I'll bear all that in mind, but continue my cautious and skeptical approach on GPSs till I can research into it more thoroughly.

@@mansterj : They don't have a "signal".....they are RECEIVERS, not transmitters (except the Garmin "inreach" models which can send messages via satellite) so they can't be tracked.

James Teh: Garmin GPSmap 67 (and 67i) both have long battery life......180 hours in standard mode, 840 hours in expedition mode. They are also multi-band and therefore much more accurate than most others.

You will find that GPS does not use sats because they are fake....GPS means ground position system and radio masts are used
@presentfactory

No it stands for global positioning system. Stop being stupid, satellites are used for GPS so it has worldwide coverage as many places (such as the middle of the ocean or the wilderness) do not have any coverage by things like radio towers due to it being either infeasible or not financially worth dotting a ton of towers all across the world like that. Of course in cities and places with cell towers all over there are more precise location services utilizing that infrastructure things like smartphones use, but this is not the same technology as GPS. If you ever need to convince yourself satellites are real there's plenty you can see with the naked eye at night if you just look up their trajectories, the easiest one to do that with likely being the International Space Station given it's quite large and in a low orbit.
