I gotta disagree about Frederick; I like him for basically all of the reasons you listed for DKC2's final boss! It's long and challenging but totally doable, and I like that even though the fight's long, he changes things up throughout the fight, and these new attacks are based on some of his old ones so you're not completely blind. Not to mention his sick theme, too. Definitely agree about DKC1's bosses, though. They were way too simple and repeat too many times throughout the game.

On my first playthrough of DKC: TF, I was about halfway through the game when I stopped playing it for about a couple of months. When I resumed, I'd forgotten about the intro cutscene where Lord Fredrik is shown to be the main culprit behind DK Island being frozen in ice. So, when I got to the fight against him, although I did notice it was a bit tougher than anything prior to that point, I didn't realise I'd just beaten the final boss until the credits rolled. It goes to show how I feel about him: he doesn't feel like a final boss at all. Also, as you mentioned, the hitbox on his back is beyond flawed. Landing the last couple of hits just isn't a fun experience and doesn't feel rewarding whatsoever.

Mad Jack from DK 64 is a classic boss. You can't directly hit him, you have to ground pound on a specific switch you have a very narrow time window to activate. Can't be too far away from it by the time the dodging phase ends, you have to pay attention to which color tile he's on so that you don't hit the switch for the wrong space, and he shoots lasers at you when he's done trying to squash you- while you're trying to hit the switch. Plus he gets so fast that it's effectively impossible to dodge the squashing phase unless you master how to float diagonally- which has little margin for error. And in the last phase, he turns invisible. Definitely no slouch in difficulty, but it's fair difficulty, doesn't throw any unpredictable shenanigans into the mix.

Honestly I liked Frederik a lot, though I'm not super sure if it's because of the spectacle at this point, considering I was an easily impressed teen at the time. I think it may have been that I never really reached a point where the cycles felt like tedium, or even possibly nostalgia blindness, since I haven't touched the game since launch, but even so, I remember it pretty fondly. Tiki Tong on the other hand I found miserable to slog through, though admittedly that was even longer ago, so I can't very easily put words to why. I just remember being so bored by the fight that dying felt more like agony than it normally would have, and if it hadn't been the last boss I honestly might've given up on it.

Damn. Fredrik is one of my favorite bosses ever. And probably my favourite from all the DKC series. Exactly for the reasons you mentioned. Its tense and punishing but fair, and I love long bossfights. Well, the bad hitbox sucks, yeah. Overall I found all TF bosses to be great and among the best in the series. I'd put all the DKC 1 bosses except K.Rool in the worst personally. Just way too bland, as you said.

I liked when he listed a bunch of things that make Lord Fredrik cool and said they were the reasons he didn't like him! (It is annoying trying to jump on him but I feel that way about the entirety of Returns and TF.) I think DKC1's bosses were cool for being just giant animals. I've always thought K. Rool himself may be a Krusha considering he sounds like one in the first game and they call him King Krusha K. Rool in DK64 - so he himself would fit in with the rest. When I think of Donkey Kong, I don't think that he should be fighting flying swords or evil snowmen, I think that he should be fighting huge animals. (I don't mind the flying sword tho.) Buuut Dumb Drum is undeniably a stupid idea.

Good video, although I big disagree with your #5 worst boss. I love Fredrik because of how hard and unforgiving it is, and honestly I think it feels like the perfect cap to that game because that game honestly gets pretty brutal difficulty-wise. Plus, I don't think the encounter has any moments that are truly unfair, so I enjoy it a ton because it is the game saying to me like "hey, you can clearly play a video game or two so we ain't holding back at all, get ready for a true final boss." I will say though I agree with the number one placement because every time I play DKC now I just trash talk the bosses (although I still like K Rool's fight). EDIT: I'll do my top 5s here since I haven't really considered what they are till now. Best: 1. Mad Jack - love the design, fight feels frantic, the sound fx during this fight are great and hit my nostalgia hard 2. Lord Fredrik - the ultimate test of skill, ain't for pushovers, one of my favorite boss themes 3. Kaptain K. Rool - yeah this boss is really good, one of my favorite boss themes too 4. Dogadon (Chunky) - the big chunky part is just too good 5. Sumo Kong - I fondly remember this fight feeling epic as hell Worst: 1. Bleak - just way too gimmicky and easy, also I just don't like the visual designs of DKC3 bosses much 2. Dumb Drum - yeah this boss is just very silly and nonsensical 3. Squirt - yeah what the hell even is that thing 4. Tiki Tong - not necessarily a bad boss fight wise, but it feels like I am fighting knock off master hand and crazy hand 5. Really Gnawty - very silly fight, not very interesting in terms of what they change in the fight

Hard disagree on Lord Fredrik, honestly. The one thing I'd concede about him is that despite the challenge and the top notch music, the fight did kinda feel like it should've had another phase beyond that. Something like him riding atop the giant ice dragon from the opening cutscene, for example. Tiki Tong from Returns suffers from that same issue _on top_ of being a pretty basic and not very visually exciting battle, all things considered. So that would've been my pick instead.

As for the number one entry, they did improve some of the boss fights in the GBA remake. Queen Zinger has a new attack pattern while enraged, Dumb Drum now needs to be attacked via barrels, Very Gnawty is now actually decent at jumping, Really Gnawty creates stalactites from the ceiling, and the second Necky fight not only has that recolor...but also the original trying to get back at DK and Diddy.

While I've never fought him myself (I only played the original SNES versions), a shoutout of the less flattering kind should go to Kerozene from the GBA remake of DKC2. Though I appreciate that they wanted to give Stronghold Showdown an actual boss instead of the fakeout cutscene from the original (which I personally never minded), I would have preferred about anything to... that. My theory is that he was originally planned for the DKC cartoon, but was considered too hideous even for that, so he decided to take it out on the Kongs. And from what I've seen, he doesn't look very fun to fight, as well. I'm sad to see this tradition end, but I hope it will make its return some day with your views on the new _Donkey Kong Country Returns_ title, once Retro Studios is finished with not making _Metroid Prime 4._

I quite like the tropical freeze final boss, I actually just beat that game today. Although the polar bear guy from world 5 was better and felt more like a final boss

Hard disagree on Lord Frederik being one of the series' worst bosses. He's not as good as bashmaster, but the fight is a great challenge and the mechanic of the platforms being frozen by his ice attacks and returning to normal when they dip into the lava is very creative.

Best: MadJack from Frantic Factory. I thought he fit best to his level compared to the rest of the DK64 bosses: a rejected toy made from the factory that they can't contain so they have to keep him in his own isolated room. Good atmosphere, and he doesn't just take the 3 standard hits. It's perfect. Worst: Also from DK 64: the first Dogadon fight. This fight is a a straight carbon copy from the last boss fight with Army Dillo. With Army Dillo, you run in a circle, avoid fireballs, wait for his que, then throw a barrel of dynamite at him 3 times. When you fight Dogadon, you....run in a circle....avoid fireballs....wait for his que....throw a barrel of dynamite at him....3 times. HMMMMM

What I'd LOVE in a DK64 remake is changing how you get the barrels for the bosses. Instead of overused fireballs, Army Dillo could shoot fiery barrels, occasionally a non-lit one you can pick up. Perhaps the 'little Dogadons' would carry barrels to drop on you. I certainly admire the DK64 bosses for their intensity, especially their animations when getting hit, but they're a bit antiquated. But how DARE you offend the Colonel's beak! Jk, but I adore that boss. Sure, there's downtime as he gets from one side to the other, but when he charges at you, or stomps with feet closed, plus the second phase, makes him a refreshingly unexpected fella. He also strikes a nice visual balance as he mixes a big egg-shaped mech (that'd give Sonic bad flashbacks) and an utterly simplistic rooster with glasses and 0 expression. He's more of a rubber chicken, but also a groovy, genius inventor, and that's just funny. I wish the Kremlings employed him next. Plus his theme is FIRE. I've done a remix of it, if I may toss shameless self-promotion at the bottom here kzitem.info/news/bejne/lZ-EmoZ6roGjoKQ

DKC GBA improved the bosses a lot and they are actually fun and challenging. Also the extra boss from DKC3 GBA sucks as much as squirt.

Totally unpopular opinion but I really like Fredrik. He’s actually difficult and shoots ICE DRAGONS out of his alp horn. A slight on him though is that he apes K Rool a bit too much in terms of tactics.

I had a lot of frustration with most all of the bosses in DKC Returns because of how frustrating the joystick is on the New 2DS. it just isn't designed for that type of game and it shows

I think the final K. Rool boss fight from DK64 is the one that I consider to be both the best and the worst in the series at the same time. On one hand, it's super creative, decently challenging, and feels super epic due to being so long and featuring all playable Kongs, with the final phase of Chunky punching the shit out of K. Rool feeling especially epic. It's just so satisfying to finally land a hit and feel all the weight of Chunky's fist gently rearranging K. Rool's face. On the other hand, man, does the battle go on and on and on. It just doesn't want to end. So many phases, so many cutscenes, so much waiting around for K. Rool to expose his weak spots. And if you die just once, you have to redo the entire thing. The final phase with Chunky in particular, while being the most epic, also happens to be the most frustrating one, because the timing for his punches is so damn precise, and there isn't really any indication for what the correct timing even is. I remember playing the game with a friend when were children, and losing the fight over and over again, just because we couldn't manage to land those last couple of hits during with Chunky. I also gotta say, I'm not really feeling that ending. Using sexy Candy to distract K. Rool and give him a boot to ass... it not only feels underwhelming (I definitely would have preferred an epic ending over a comedic one, despite the game's overall tone), but it also has very questionable morals that just become more and more apparent the older the game gets. Nowadays, you really wouldn't see stuff like that in a Nintedo game aimed at children. At least I'd hope so.

Personally, I just find K. Rool being attracted to Candy out of character for the guy. He hates the Kongs! But I will admit I love that Funky comes in and shoots that boot rocket! Now that I think of it, that scene was probably done to give Candy and Funky a chance to shine at the end.
@RPG_Hacker

@@GatorOne-in7hk That's another good point, I didn't even consider that. It really felt somewhat out-of-character for him. And yeah, you might be right about that. Although personally, if feel like DK64 already gave quite a bit of spotlight to every single Kong, including the sidekicks. Candy, Funky and Cranky probably already played a larger role in this game than in any Donkey Kong prior to that. Even then, if they wanted to feature them in the ending, I think they could have done a bit better. Instead of focussing solely on Candy's sexiness, I think they could have done something involving her music skills. I think that would have been more interesting.

I love King K Rool in DKC 1 and DK 64! I also hate both the Jack in the Box and the Puffer Fish in DK64 (man those are hell). I also love the boss in world 5 of DKCR (Donkey Kong Country Returns). I think it's called like some kind of berry boss or something I don't remember the name exactly.

I'm gonna say it: Tropical Freeze is an absolutely amazing platformer with terrible boss fights. I love replaying the actual stages, but loathe replaying any of the boss fights. They're so slow and tedious and just not fun.

The GBA version makes some of the DKC1 bosses better. Queen B has 5 Zingers surround her in various patterns throughout the battle that you have to defeat before you hit Queen B, and it's actually quite challenging (although if you're quick, you can defeat all of the Zingers before they fan out). And for Boss Dumb Drum, you don't just have to defeat the enemies it spawns, you also have to throw a TNT barrel at it.

There are SO many reasons the first game didn't age very greatly, it is still a huge mistake for me to put it so much above the third DKC. DKC3 is better in every way except Kiddy, Bird Lost World Level and Elli's Bonus Levels that disappear after a fail at the start of Lost World.
