Every time people talk about Carol Kaye's most recognized bass, they list hit radio songs. Anyone know how many great bass lines she created for TV shows, both theme songs and show drama music. She performed on: Cannon, The Streets of San Francisco, Mission: Impossible, M*A*S*H, Kojak, Get Smart, Hogan's Heroes, The Love Boat, McCloud, Mannix, It Takes a Thief, Peyton Place Thee Cosby Show, Hawaii Five-O, The Addams Family, The Brady Bunch, Ironside, Room 222, Bonanza, Wonder Woman, Alias Smith & Jones, Run for Your Life, and Barnaby Jones. And tons of feature films. You should make a video on the TV music. People love that, it's nostalgic. You are a super duper great bassist, by the way. Love your channel and thank you!

As she had already done middle school at the conservatory in Pesaro, she already read music. Fast forward to about 1995. I took her to the NAMM southern California. She was perfectly comforably hanging out with the big boys, Jeff Berlin, Vic, Dave Mustaine, never starstruck. Then she saw this little grandma jam.ing away on the bass. "Dad, is that?" Yes, it is. Would you like to meet her? No sooner, Carol saw her and came up to her. "Do you play, honey? "Yes, I do." "What instrument?" "Bass guitar" "That's a wonderful instrument for a woman to play. You see, bass players organize everyone's lives, and, well, we women have been doing that for centuries." My daughter was in heaven.

In 1993, when my father gave me my first bass lesson, he gave me his old copy of Carol Kay's "Modern Bass Guitar" a beginner bass manual the same one he learned to play bass from when he switched from guitar to bass in 1970. When the internet came into existence, dad emailed her to thank her for writing it as well as all the awesome bass lines she created and she was actually kind enough to reply and send him a few charts and exercises. They occasionally exchanged emails. She is a very nice person and a great musician who should be better known in my opinion.

Your rendition of Good Vibrations made the hairs on my neck stand up. That only happens very occasionally. Carol + Julia = Sublime.

Hello from the US. Another great video. I think I finally have solved the mystery and understand the meaning of the pineapple. If it's what I think, then wow.! If you ever come to visit Los Angeles we need to hang out! :-)

Barbara Streisand’s song The Way We Were. That one gets me every time. Carol Kaye’s bass line in that song was masterful.

I met Carol back in 81 in Monterey ca., where she was gigging at a small club near the Monterey pier, across from the Double Tree Inn, where I was playing with my band. We became friends and kept in touch over the years. She was extremely nice and let me sit in, playing on her custom made Music Man bass…she’s amazing.

Thank you for posting - great video, especially your playing. Carol Kaye is a national treasure, not because she's a woman, but she was such a pioneer of the bass guitar. She did some incredible things.

The documentary about The Wrecking Crew is great. She had so many great bass lines, it's hard to pick just one. "Good Vibrations" is definitely one of my faves.

Oh yeah kids, there's good bass playing with a pick. Slap is not everything. Carol's playing is the essence of the bass guitar role. I somehow feel that Paul McCartney learned very much from her. She gives meaning, ground, shape, and atmosphere to so many songs. Greatest respect to Carol and to dear Julia.

I wouldn't be surprised if Good Vibrations was an influence. Paul's said that Pet Sounds (and presumably Good Vibrations too) was a huge influence that pushed them to outdo it with Pepper, so I'm sure that would have extended to the bass lines too. (Help From My Friends... Getting Better... Fixing a Hole...)

Good Vibrations was a Beetle favorite and Pet Sounds famously threw down the gauntlet that they picked up (Sergeant Pepper's). I think Paul had a fairly well developed style (without a pick for the most part) before those songs, but he must have thought she was a great player, and everyone steals from great players. Pretty sure McCartney liked and was influenced by Jamerson like any bass player with a pulse. Carol can still play guitar very well.
