Oh my goodness I’ve been eyeing the Korfkerrest (spelling? who knows) for years but it’s so expensive (like $300). Is it really worth the money? I might splurge once I get whatever stimulus comes through 😂

Honestly, I think it's absolutely worth it. I've never had a shoulder rest impact my sound so significantly! Plus it is so customizable! I would see if you can try and get it on sale somewhere because it really is a crazy expense, but ultimately I am so happy with it!

Sounds like kids should just stick to Geared Tuners & a String winder when they learn to string & tune a Violin, Viola, Cello (Gamba, or any stringed instrument) cause it's far more superior & more updated.

Unfortunately it's not all that common with classical musicians/instruments, but more and more people I know are getting geared pegs!
@RockStarOscarStern634

@@ChronicallyMusical It should be more common due to how much more popular they're becoming. I just realized that the idea of using Guitar style geared tuners on a Violin, Viola, or Cello didn't catch on until we had Electric Bowed instruments because alot of people didn't realize that these machines heads for these instruments:www.hangoutstorage.com/fiddlehangout.com/storage/attachments/archived/photos/large/24/2481-1373541682018.jpg turned out to be "Locking tuners" which have a little lock that disengages the gear allowing the peg to be turned by hand for faster string changes. They should make more of these Guitar style Machine heads again cause they do put the tuning knobs in a more ergonomic position.

You're lucky to have geared tuners like a Guitar, w/ a String winder the disadvantage of how long it takes to restring is now gone.

I agree! Geared pegs are the best!

I use the everest, and mine looks almost exactly the same as yours! Also I love that this and your IBD product review are connected by you talking about sticking things in holes (the dampit) 😭 I've looked into the korfkerrest, and I've heard a few violists say it makes their instrument sound brighter. Have you experienced this? I already have a pretty bright A string, so I'm a bit nervous to commit! Okay, last question, do you find the geared pegs to be heavy? That's something I've heard about them that makes me nervous to commit! I'd love to get geared pegs someday though. My boyfriend is a double bassist with geared pegs and I just think they're so cool!

HAH! I didn't even make the sticking-in-holes connection!!! Okay, so in answer to your amazing questions, I'm gonna make a list because I LOVE lists: 1. I do think the KorfkerRest makes my viola a bit brighter but what I notice more than anything is clarity of tone. As someone who has always preferred a darker sound, I don't notice that being affected too much by the shoulder rest. I actually kind of appreciate the brightness, especially in faster more technical passages! 2. About your A string, what are you using right now? Perhaps you can experiment with trying some other string brands and see if that helps the brightness if that's something that sticks out our you're not happy with it. 3. I have never noticed the geared pegs to be heavy, but I've had them for 12 years so I may just be used to them? But I don't ever recall them adding any extra weight to my instrument or anything like that. They're made out of plastic I think, so they're pretty light in my opinion!

@@ChronicallyMusical That's great to know! I might consider buying the korfkerrest next time it's on sale! I could totally hear a difference in your sound between the two shoulder rests. I've experimented with so many different A strings. Right now I'm using just a regular Evah Pirazzi A, which has been my best option, plus I use EPs for the rest of my strings so I can just buy the full set! I had a tonal adjustment done a few years ago which helped considerably, but I think once the pandemic is more under control, I might go to another luthier and see if they have any ideas. I've also learned a lot of ways to manipulate my playing to not get it to sound so harsh. Thanks for answering my questions! :)

Helicore Viola Strings might give you ultimate playability because they're a little bit thinner & the stranded steel core gets rid of the squeak.

I'll look into that, thank you for the suggestion!

@@ChronicallyMusical Here they are:www.daddario.com/products/orchestral/viola/helicore-viola/helicore-viola-string-set-long-scale-medium-tension/ & all 4 Strings have a Stranded Steel Core that helps them hold up better including the High A. These strings are the most versatile.

@@ChronicallyMusical What's unique about Helicore Strings is that they sound exactly the same as Gut Strings due to their Stranded Steel Core. A Dark Kaplan Rosin & CodaBow Joule for Viola would also help w/ playability. We much prefer synthetic rosin cause it's far more durable, plus a Carbon Fiber Bow holds up better.

I always always ALWAYS have bobby pins and floss in my case! but these are awesome. where do you suggest buying a peg winder?? I haven't changed my strings in a year because I don't want to invest the time without one of those HA
@ChronicallyMusical

Ooh that is so smart! I definitely need to add some bobby pins in there for SURE. And yea I definitely haven't changed mine in that long, maybe longer! It's awful! In school I used to change them every 2 months! As far as the peg winder goes, I just updated the links in the description of my video to include one specifically for Wittner pegs! I'm not sure if it's the same one I have but it might even be better since it's explicitly for violin/viola pegs.

I believe there is also a peg winder listed on the Wittner website as well but I don't think you can purchase directly from the website.
