@@CraigsTechTalk Tony is right about having more than one depending on your needs. I have one, which is basically a file server (and Time Machine) as intended, only a few apps, i.e bitorrent & nzb's. Although your model has a better processor and run various apps, it's not wise. I have a mac mini with itunes which points to all my music on my nas and I use itunes remote to stream to all my homepods. Synology camera software is ok, if your nas is only used for that but you only a few cameras for free then it's silly money for licenses per camera. Look in to the "synocommunity" for extra apps for you nas. Also as always, make a backup of your nas off site, just in case, extra tip: Hide your nas too ;o)

Last week I needed to move some of my wife's data off of a USB2.0 external hdd I needed to use for a backup for something without usb3.0, I asked her where her external hdd was I gave her for backing up her data (got tired of managing it) and she looked at me like I was speaking another language. I told her right then I was getting a NAS and ordered the DS220+ and 2x 8TB Ironwolf drives. Will set up her macbook on a time machine schedule with it and get her used to using Moments for our kids photos. So will be using it for backups, time machine, photo storage and media streaming. Been wanting to rip my dvd/blu rays anyway. Eventually will get a UHD drive so I can rip my 4k movies once I get enough to justify the purchase. I may consider looking into security cameras since their software allows for 2 free. Plus will check if my doorbell camera will archive footage to that since I only get so much saved without paying extra for cloud storage with my alarm company. Went with the 220+ for now but may check out the next iteration of the 420+ or 920+ in 2-3 years when they do their next refresh. Will give me time to see what I really need.

Update one year later! I now have two Synology NAS’. My primary DS1821+ and my backup DS1621+. The primary has 7 14TB drives with 2 drive redundancy and a single SSD drive for VM’s. So far I’m messing with Linux and Windows VM’s. The backup has 6 14TB drives with single drive redundancy. I backup all my Windows and Mac devices to the primary. Then I back up my primary NAS to my backup NAS. Both, and my main PC are on a 10GbE network. I will eventually get a 4 drive NAS, maybe the DS420+ or 920+ to keep at my kids house to backup critical files. For now, I’ll go with the hard drive backup. Gotta say, I’m loving my Synology’s! Got all my ripped DVD’s, CD’s and photos on them as well. I have our phones uploading our photos too. I also gave it run reports on drive health, security, backups, etc. then have it email me. Then I have my iPhone send me a notification that I received the email. I’d definitely recommend them. They have a great OS UI and many apps. Way to much geek fun. I’m seriously thinking of replacing my Orbi mesh with their next Gen coming this year. Great WiFi segmentation options and will let you have it auto select device band or you can override it. That would solve the Echo Studio/FireTV Home Theater issue with Orbi. kzitem.info/news/bejne/sJCp02qHhWN2n20

What do you do when your NAS runs out of space? Do you then have to upload say 64TB to the cloud, replace the drives with higher capacity and download from the Cloud? Does the RAID setup allow you change drives to a higher capacity one by one?
@patnutoris4054
3 жыл бұрын
If you have 64TB of data then you probably are an advanced user so you would know the answer. For the rest of us with 0-8TB data then no upload to cloud is needed but it requires that you have set up the RAID config correct for redundancy. It also helps if you have some Linux skills and understanding of how the NAS work in the background. For the basic Synology Hybrid RAID (or SHR), just unplug one disc and replace it with something bigger. Let the RAID system rebuild itself on the new disk. Keep doing this until you have the space needed. It is even easier if you have empty slot on your NAS, just add a new disk.
@xyhmo
3 жыл бұрын
No, you can just start switching drives, one at the time (and wait for rebuild for finish before switching another). And with SHR you often don't have to switch all of them to get more space available. Play around using this calculator: www.synology.com/en-global/support/RAID_calculator

If backup and data security for 1-4 user(s) is your main objective then get two DS220j, put one in your own house and put the other at your parents/siblings/friends house. Now connect the 2 different NAS to eachother (with Hyper backup) to have one more security layer with off-site backups for your friend and you. For backup, you should follow the 3-2-1 rule. This stands for 3 copies, 2 different media (or disks) and one off-site copy. As you see, backups are relatively expensive since you need 3x the storage and 2xComputer power than you actually use. But it is still worth it. If you have more users or you aim at creating a Plex or media server then look into DS220+ or DS220Play.

@patnutoris4054
3 жыл бұрын
@@BIgmo1962 I haven't used it myself but it got excellent reviews for home, small office and content creators. Hope you enjoy it and it fit your needs. My tips would be general for NAS, which goes like: RAID is is NOT a backup so use on-site and off-site backup tools with revision control. The DS420+ can do all of this for you but you need one more remote server (synology or Linux/Unix/BSD with rsync) for the off-site. The remote backup server can or even should be based on a single drive solution as it will be a copy of your main NAS. The remote server can also be relatively slow/cheap/old as the network speed will be the main limiting factor here. Also, keep an eye on the remote system so that it does not go off-line without noticing it. Finally, test and learn how to recover from backups as it is an essential skill for NAS users. Simulate revision, partial and full recovery from both local and remote server.
