Yeah, I really like the idea, I say keep it up! I'd be interested to see one on MKIV dubs in particular, as I had 2. I put way more labor and money into those 2 cars than every other car combined; they deterred me heavily from buying dubs - probably not forever, but for awhile, so I would be interested in seeing what was considered common issues for them.

Let's see. 08 with 190,000 miles 1. Replaced axles because of boots. 2. Replace cam followers every 15,000 miles. Also fuel psi drops under heavy throttle 3. Steering column lock issues with occasional no start 4. Replaced the solenoid in the ac compressor twice 5. Replaced the electronic parking brake module because of a reoccurring fault. Easier to replace then have the software updated. 6 random led taillight fault. 7. Clear coat is shot With all this, I still love my car, but would love to trade it in on a CC

Hi, you forgot to mention, dual mass flywheel problems, oil pump failure due to worn hex key, EPB switch failure, EPB motors cracking and seizing, door handle mechanism failing, rust and corrosion especially around tailgate lights, plastic intake manifold flaps breaking, engine shutdown due to faulty injectors (recalled finally), this is just a few of the common faults seen in North America and Europe. B6 = avoid avoid avoid!!
@HumbleMechanic

+TheJungleApe in the US injectors were never recalled. There was a warranty extension, but not a recall. I did forget about the parking brake issues. Several software updates on that too. Intakes was another one that was common. Much more on the later B6 cars(I think I was thinking more along the BPY at the time of the video). But I also haven't seen many oil pump modules on that gen. I haven't ran into much rust issues. But that may be due to my location.

Hey! Once a month my parking brake button on my '07 european Passat Variant starts blinking and the EPB will not engage. I also see a parking lamp light up and three beeps can be heard. This usually disappears after switching the ignition off and on. According to Passat forums this can be caused by a fault Parking brake button, or by water or dirt getting into the electric motor. Is there a good way to diagnose the cause of this? The strange part is there are no errors in the OBD2, my mechanic looked at it with a licensed VCDS and din't find anything. Any help is appreciated!

I just sold my B5 2005 Passat TDi for peanuts because of the oil chain debacle. I elected not to fix it because it had 177k on it. VW should have a class action lawsuit served against it for this engine fail. This is a design issue as they did not use the design outside of the USA. There are three fixes for the problem: expensive, more expensive and out-of-control expensive. I was also on the third driver's side half-shaft. These fail a lot. Now on my 2012 Passat TDI, I have the P202 CEL light that's caused by a DEF container heater issue but I'm hoping this is handled when the car goes in for the emissions repair that's coming. Disgusted with VW about this so will not be buying any more VW's.
@HumbleMechanic
9 жыл бұрын
I have seen a hand full of those oil pump failures. Removing the module and putting in a plain pump worked good. But you are right it's not cheap. The heater issue is somewhat common. I don't know if software will fix the issue or not. But maybe VW will offer some goodwill assistance for you. I would call VW and ask for sure.
@jungleape

+HumbleMechanic The oil pump failing due to worn balance shaft is a matter of WHEN and not IF. It will happen on all B6's with 77mm hex keys that drive the oil pump. @@DigitalDissident my ac stopped working again so I paid just 900$s to have a new compressor and all related parts installed....not sure why it stopped working but it's fast approaching summer here in Daytona Beach Florida and a properly working ac is a MUST.

Great video! It's hard to tell how reliable these cars are since I see mixed results regarding them. It doesn't help that people with a bad experience are more likely to post about it that people with a good experience. So even though they can get problems, would you call them reliable?

Definitely depends on what kinda of engine it has in my opinion. I bought one because I needed a car to work in the summer not knowing much about VW specs/models (bmw guy) not knowing it was an FSI engine. I literally needed to replace almost everything and I’m almost 3k in repairs deep (no dealerships all by myself w my buddy). Cam follower was busted completely through so replaced cam follower as well as HPFP & LPFP. Had to do valve cover gasket, spark plugs, coil packs, coolant temp sensors, replaced all fuses & relays, fan control module, PCV & brakes + rotors + all brake lines. Ended up being a faulty ECU. I was able to save money & grabbed a used one that was updated & now the car can finally run w no epc light then brought it to VW to flash my vin on it. Gas is still very shitty but I missed 2 months of working so gonna keep it until end of the summer. I recommend the TSI engine. Much more reliable than shitty FSI

Scary thing: I have had three out of the five listed that have failed. Luckily one of them, the cam lead and cam shaft, was under warranty. That would've set me back almost $2k at the stealership.

Love your posts! Can't wait to see more of your R32! I have a 2008 Passat VR6 4motion with 258,000+ miles on it. I have had some sporadic, intermittent misfires that seem to go away as quickly as they appear. However, the car can function just fine for many months before the next mishap... Example: heading home from work, turn corner after stopping, car starts misfiring, shut car off when home, get scan tool, turn car back on...its running fine... Do you think this could be the coil packs? When I scan it the only codes will be the misfire(s)... A 2nd issue I just have been putting off diagnosing is my 12V outlets. They quick working about a year ago. Have you seen this before? I replaced the fuse...or attempted...it blew as soon as it made contact. Any idea's what to look for?

Make sure nothing is in the 12v outlet. Doubt it’s a cool issue. Next time check faults before shutting the car off.

Exactly... when people ask which car is the best I say, if cars didn't have issues they wouldn't have mechanics that specializes in every brand. I unfortunately bought my 07 late into its age so things are wearing out naturally at this point, but my b4 passat was 23 years old and biggest repair was new tranny, but how many people are driving 20 year old cars up and down the east coast like my car did. That made me a vw supporter, but I may be going Japanese just because of the lack ease of diy on my passat.

TijucaWeirdo No...no its taking care of your car. My B5.5 Passat trucked on to 273k *miles* and I sold it for a down-payment on my new B6 :) I took care of that and I intend to take care of the new one

The more I took care of my B5 Passat, the more it bit me in the ass. Dealer finally bought it back from me. Problem is, you can't play catch up with these cars, and you need to live or work near a good vw indy shop. As for these cars lasting 300k, anything would last that long, given the work and investment put into them. Americans throw away Fords and GM's and Hyundais when the transmission goes at 200k; a Passat owner probably would fix the car. Passats are not viable for people with moderate means with only 1 car, no DIY skills, and without a friend in the business. Lack of support from VW and its dealers compounds the issue.

NO, it's not "taking care of your car". I've had a VW too, and let me tell you: they are fabulous feeling, chintzy, fragile Euro trash with endless quality and reliability problems. Good gawd, my 1996 Plymouth Breeze cloud car had fewer problems as a ten year old car I got just after high school than my VW Golf V (Rabbit) did from BRAND NEW. *I went directly from that Mopar to the 2008 VW in February 2009. I expected so much better. Toyota is where it's at if you want dead reliable.

Just bought a 2006 2.0 turbo passat and the first day on the freeway the car stalled on me almost cause a major accident. Anytime I would get on the gas hard it would stall and all kinds of lights came on took it to a mechanic and he told me there was a hole in the vacuum hose putting to much air in the engine hopefully that was the problem because i never had a car stall on me on the freeway. I onwed a 2007 3.5 nissan Altima and never had a problem with it till it got totaled out by a dumbass driver but yeah one day in the passat and yeah not liking it at all miss my Altima

My 2007 Passat Wagon now has just around 160K miles (~250,000 km), and I just did $1100 worth of repairs. One of the failures was P0304 that HumbleMechanic mentioned, but I didn't see this video before I got it fixed, and the VW dealership didn't mention anything on a recall either. I also got my CV joints replaced back around at 100K miles so I am 2 out of 5 so far. I'm hoping to never face the other 3. =)

Hi @humblemechanic, Are these 2.0 turbo FSI engines interference engines? In case camshaft timing chain failure will the valves collide with pistons? There is a 06 passat that I'm looking at which timing chain broke. I'd like to know what kind of damage I'm looking at? Thanks

We have a 2008 2.0T and we finally had to replace the faulty column last year to the tune of CAD800$ at the dealership. It was acting up mostly in the winter when things contracted due to cold weather I presume because it always worked fine during summer months. I researched it quite a bit and it appears that control board has bad micro switch and poor soldering on it but ultimately I decided to just let dealership replace it with the new unit. Will see how long this one will last as we plan on keeping the wagon for 15 years at least.

I love your videos. Informative. However; as a previous Mark V Golf (Rabbit a la North America) owner and current Toyota driver, I have to ask: Other than fan folks/enthusiast nuts or first timers with the brand (as I was with my Golf 2.5 5-speed- I read all the Mk IV horror stories and yet STILL took the plunge), who would really buy a VW? They drive fantastically, have that magic, solid feel, and a general feel of "quality" that unfortunately just doesn't come through in real life. I had glitching audio, speed control, power windows, blowing headlamps (seriously, three sets of bulbs from brand new in two years!), failed clutch, every dash HVAC knob BUT one broke, the fat people on the passenger side breaking a wire in the seat resulting in an air bag light thing happened, bad steering column that had to be replaced because it started making a grinding noise, and probably a couple more things. What a blessing in disguise for me when some teenagers ran a stop sign and I T-boned them, totalling my car. I can say VW's are VERY safe! I can't imagine what all other problems it would have had, having watched your other excellent videos, Mr. Humble Mechanic. Since my VW, I've had a few other cars. I currently drive an 11th Gen Corolla S. Until I have deep pockets and less limited time, I am sacrificing soul for "perfection". It may be tinny compared to a VW, but I've had 0 real issues and at 62K already from new! Keep up the good work!!!

Sorry I know this video is old but this should be called bpy Passat failures the ccta/cbfa fail very differently as in intake mainfolds, rear main seals, and main drive timing chains, haven't seen a steering lock fail on anything newer than like an 08, fuel pumps still fail but not in the way the bpy did
