Absolutely. I've been in the same exact position as she was a few years ago now, except it wasn't a 13y/o Chihuahua, it was a 2 year old Husky, and the way he was lost was because he had a severe intestinal blockage that presented as an ear infection. My gut told me from the get-go that it had something to do with the intestines, but my mom insisted it was an ear infection. I'd told her straight that if we continue down the road of treating an ear infection we were going to lose him, lo and behold... December 13, 2020 was the day he crossed the Rainbow Bridge because we couldn't afford the 5k USD surgery to fix the intestinal blockage. Victoria's story hit me the HARDEST because I didn't put my foot down about having him actually checked out by a vet until it was too late to do anything to save him and my mom thought she did everything right. I still cry when I think about it--not just from the grief that comes with that sort of event, but from the frustration and knowing I failed him because I didn't push hard enough to have a professional take a look at him. I know he'd still be here as a 4 year old Husky now if I did.

I lost my 14 year old lab earlier this year, and the last 6 months of her life were tough. She had bladder cancer, thyroid cancer, a herniated back, and had lost a lot of weight due to two cancers. I felt like I was always trying to put out fires and never could get enough water to fully put them out, only to dampen them a little. This comment really helped heal some guilt I've felt about, "What if I did this, would she have had another few months or another year? Would she have been more comfortable if I had done this?". I know it's 10 months after you've commented this, but thank you.

The end of Jackie's story had me sobbing, seeing her respond to her person like she did. In 2006 we had a house fire, and my blue heeler/terrier mix was caught in the garage for several long minutes before the firefighters rescued her. She received so much CO poisoning it blinded and paralyzed her back end. I took her to the emergency vet where they stabilized her and kept her overnight doing all kinds of tests. The next day when I went to see her, I walked into the treatment room and she didn't move, so I said "Hey baby girl, I'm here" and at the sound of my voice she tried so hard to get up and come to me, very similar to Jackie. Unfortunately she had received so much poisoning and damage to her lungs and permanent damage to her CNS from the fire a that I had to make the very hard choice to euthanize her. I am lucky enough to be friends with a vet and vet tech, so was able to take her to my friends house where she peacefully passed.

we got my first dog when I was seven. His name's Finn, a little chocolate labradoodle, I loved him as much as a seven year old could love a dog. Six months later, my parents came to me saying they were giving the dog away to relatives. Watching my best friend being stuck on a cargo plane from western Canada to Qatar was the most painful thing I'd ever had to go through in my life. I cried, as hard as I could, screaming to have him back. But then, seven years later, my relatives moved back to Canada and brought the dog back. He'd come back to my house, where we had a new dog, and found the same spot his bed used to be and laid down in that spot. Seven years, and he remembered. Something tells me that dogs never forget the people that loved them, and it made me cry all over again seeing these pets try to get to their owners through all the pain.

The fact that I would wind up going through the same pain only a few months afterwards with the death of my childhood cat having to be euthanized by the police after being hit by a car, it's an episode I actively have to avoid even if I don't want to. I can't imagine how painful it was for everybody that were present that day.

Unfortunately, animals can dart out in front of you, and you can't stop. In Dec. of 2020 (on my birthday, the 11th), we hit a deer that actually ran into our car. We didn't see him until it was too late. And it was dark out. The deer died, our car was smashed up pretty bad---it's OK now though. The deer was a young spike buck. The sheriff did release the deer to us, and we did get venison out of it. We wern't going very fast either---35 mph tops. (Jan Griffiths).

It’s more heartless of the owners to let their cat out unsupervised. Why own a cat if you’re gonna let them face the dangers of a stray? Get a catio or leash train your cat. The world isn’t nice and you can’t control that, what you can control is how you expose the beings you’re responsible for to the world. Unless you own a barn or farm cat, they should NOT be left unattended outdoors. If you can’t do the minimum of being a pet parent maybe you don’t deserve a pet. Also do blame yourself for anything that happens to your pets because of your negligence, hope the loss hurts because it was totally avoidable. I’m so sick of people who think they deserve a pet while also not doing the bare minimum.

I once rescued a kitten that was hit by a car. My vet said the back paralysis was permanent and we took him home. Over the next three days or so we saw him slowly moving his hind legs till you could not see that there was anything ever wrong with him. My vet was amazed, but when we found him I had a gut feeling that it was just from the trauma of being hit by the car and that it would be alright so I refused to have it put down. He was eventually rehomed and lived a good life.

Never thought I'd be crying over a baby goat but here I am. My heart breaks for the tech as well. I remember this time I went thru a DV situation and had to re-home my puppy due to the fact if I was to go to a shelter, she couldn't come with as she was my only emotional support and was a puppy. I remember how hard it was to look at her as she drove off with her new family. I fell into a deep depression and barely left my room without busting into tears. They aren't just animals. They're family. I got a new puppy last year after all was said and done and unfortunately after I made and attempt at my life to get away from my attacker. She's made my life so much better and I look forward to seeing her every time I go home from work. We go to the beach together and I take her around town in a little front carrier. Ok but that Chihuahua onesie is a big need.

In the end, the biggest way you can show your fur baby unconditional love, is to let them go with a little bit of dignity. Being selfless enough to let them go, even if you’re not ready. I started as an adoption counselor/kennel assistant a few years ago. It’s hard and heart breaking and bittersweet work but it thought me valuable lessons. I work as a vet assistant now and am slowly learning more and more very day. I’ve started studying more material outside of work to go into continuing education for a tech license. Find a clinic, when you’re ready, with a doctor or doctors that love to teach. Don’t stop asking questions. Have empathy for everyone no matter what situation. I’ve seen a lot between working at a kennel and a clinic. Just bringing a pet into a clinic even just once in the pets life shows that there are at least people out there that try. We don’t deserve pets but if we can give them whatever we can, not give up, and know when it’s time to let go then that’s a receptive to put a little bit of good back in the world.

Saying goodbye to your fury companion is never the easiest thing to do. I've been through it a lot and I do mean A LOT. Last year, I had to put my chihuahua Sandy to sleep. She as 19 years old. Yeah she was old. 2 months before she passed away, her eating was slowing down to where she would eat about a handful of food. But then she stopped eating altogether, same with her water intake. I knew in my heart it was time. As much as I didn't want to let her go, I had to let her go with what dignity she had left as a dog. Plus I didn't want to put her through anymore pain. I still have a picture of her I took two weeks before she died. Miss her dearly.

About a few months ago I returned home from college finding my 2 year old cat ,Scout, limping around and acting weird. No vet was around to help and needed to wait till morning. By morning he was not moving and would only move his head. I could feel something big in him and realized his bladder was bulging. Morning came and my vet turned us away. I kept praying that God would give me more time and found an emergency veterinary clinic almost 30 minutes away. I kept checking during the drive to be sure he was awake and still okay. We made it to the vet and he was finally admitted. The news wasn't great. My suspicion of his condition was correct and he had a urinary blockage from crystals that formed due to anxiety from my immediate absence from the house. (I spoiled him and was the only one who snuggled with him since he was a kitten) He wasn't actually completely there and he was very cold. His heart was still going and his breathing was fine. His chances were very low and I was extremely upset thinking I'd lose him so soon. I felt awful that the only thing I could do was weep and pray for him. My thoughts were he was not going to make it and I was going to lose him and that I needed to be ready to say goodbye. The vet came back to explain he would stay overnight and will hope he recovers. This has a happy ending however. I got a call the next day that Scout's temperature was back up and he was moving around and stealing attention from others like he always does. Scout came home right now sitting next to me. Back to his grumpy but sweet self. I was given the choice to put him down but I gave him a chance and I'm glad I did. His time is not yet and I hope all of you have the same luck.

Seeing video this comforts me a bit, knowing that we aren’t the only ones suffering this alone. I had my first cat and also witnessed death infront of my eyes for the first time. I was inexperienced since I’m a first time cat owner and wanted a pet since I was young and managed to adopt Strider from my cousin’s cat when she had her litter. He was about to be 10 years old when he passed and I felt it was my fault cuz he wasn’t neutered (I heard uneutered/unspayed cats don’t live long), I was nervous about bringing him into the vet because we were also struggling financially and signing up for vet membership was a pain because doing it online was unreliable. I felt like there was nothing much me and my dad could do for him but bring as much comfort in his lasting days. He passed away from a sudden heart arrest (from what my dad thinks) in April 2022 5am around the time I was a bout to get my student loan because I was willing to sacrifice a sum to save him. Still hurts me to this day because I was by his side till last breath that morning.

Poor Bluebell- I had this happen to one of my kittens. One of my mother's friends had little boys, and we kids were running around the garage. The little kitten stepped out from behind a piece of plywood and Mark stepped on her and broke her back. She had to be put down. We all were horrified- we were just little kids & it was awful. I never spoke to him again. Years later, when we were in our fifties, he actually apologized to me about it- he was traumatized by that incident. Years later, my family used to let cats out. They would get run over on the road we lived on. We lost 2 excellent cats that way. We no longer have outside cats. They are indoor cats only. I'd say keep your cats inside. And be very aware where they are. Cats in my house now? They always have the right of way. They're a lot smaller than human beings, and a lot of times they're older and slower; they're not paying attention that's for sure to what we're doing. We have to be responsible for their welfare. 💔😿
