Greetings, I am so glad, even though you were talking hitters, that you talked about the overall impact of a player. In the end, the player's impact is about hitting, base running, and fielding. Even though Babe Ruth was one of the worst base runners and fielders amongst the greats, his batting was so phenomenal, as you stated, that his hitting alone puts him in the top 5. Yet, when you look at the overall impact of a player as you intimated, as an overall impact player, my model outputs the same players as you but in the following order, considering once again the OVERALL IMPACT of the player to runs and wins: 1) Bonds [514 stolen bases; 8 gold gloves] 2) Babe Ruth 3) Ty Cobb [892 stolen bases including stealing home 54 times] 4) Willie Mays [338 stolen bases; 12 gold gloves] 5) Ted Williams

i think you gotta go Babe Ruth and Ted Williams with 1st and 2nd. they both had the best combination of contact plus power. career averages only 0.002 points apart, both hit over 500 doubles and OPS over 1.1, and Teddy would have been a LOT closer to the Babe in homeruns had he not missed his best baseball years between ages 24-26.

Tony Gwynn is a no brainer to be top 5. Only player since ted Williams to hit .400 over 162 consecutive game stretch (1993 - 1995). Other than his rookie season, hit over .300 every other year with a career batting average of .338, 8 batting titles, 15 all star appearances, 7 silver slugger, never struck out more than 40 times in a season (That includes 6 seasons with well over 600 plate appearances and one with over 700). The other miss for you is Stan Musial. Career BA - .331, career home runs - 475, Led the NL in BA 7 times, made the all-stars 24 times, 3 time MVP, 1,599 walks to 696 strike outs, and 3,630 hits.

Reggie Jackson... power, speed, great arm (a complete ball player), Don Mattingly ... power, average, consistency... Tim Raines... power, slugging, speed, base stealing... Ricky Henderson... still holds the record for stolen bases, most leadoff HR's, good average hitter, Dave Winfield...speed, power, average, rocket arm. **That was a great list, here's the challenge... name your personal all star lineup, IF you were a manager, ANY ERA.

Barry Bonds was a great hitter, top 10 no doubt, but if you compare the two's stats, Barry Bonds only has Gwynn on walks and Hr's, in every other notable category, Tony Gwynn was a better hitter. lifetime stats: Barry Bonds 22 seasons (with the help of roids)- .298 BA, 2,935 Hits, 1,539 Strikeouts, 2,558 BB's (most all time) Tony Gwynn 20 seasons- .338 BA, 3,141 Hits, 434 Strikeouts, 790 BB's pure, putting bat on ball and putting ball into play, Tony Gwynn was better. The thing to remember about Babe Ruth's home runs is that the fences were farther back at that time. It wasn't until 1940 that the baseball owners were required to move the fences to where they are now. The owners objected to the change because they didn't think anyone would want to sit in the outfield bleachers. Some analysts suggest that had Ruth played using modern fences, he would have hit well over a thousand home runs. Remember, when Babe Ruth called his shot in the 1932 World Series, the center field fence was over 450 feet back. Also, the baseballs were deader in his time. Back in the 1960s, the Hall of Fame took some 1920s vintage baseballs and pitched them to Tommy Davis. He couldn't hit any of them over 200 feet. The bringing in of the fences is the second factor that would have affected Ted Williams career, as he started playing in 1939.

First off, LOVE the decoration. So much better than white wall extravaganza. Second, it's tough to make that list because hitting is weird. You have to focus on what Stat you think is most important. For example babe Ruth hit a lot of home runs but Pete rose holds the record for most hits in a career. Personally my top 5 are Ted williams, yaz, mays, ty cobb, and shoeless Joe jackson. But Jackie Robinson should be in there as should Joe dimaggio. I think the more interesting question you should do a video is who would be on the all time Antonelli dream team. You could just do starters, so 1 player per position maybe choose 5 starting pitchers for your rotation. Or to make things easier choose a full 25 man roster but follow a normal team structure so how many relievers and bench players would be on the team and I think with relievers ether just choose closers or choose starters since we do see starters in college or in the minors end up in the bullpen due to no spot in the rotation or what not.

Joe Citizen I have 3500 (35:) Frank Thomas baseball cards. He was my idol growing up. I was born in 82. He was such a pure hitter. He didn’t try to pull the pitch away. His back leg lifted as he was just smashing his hips through the ball. It wasn’t a pretty swing but he was just a pure hitter. Griffey Jr gets the nod for the most beautiful swing of all time and it is not even close. Without his injuries he has well over 700 homeruns and he goes down as the most complete player (ahead of Mays) of all time.

No mention of Micky mantle or joe DiMaggio you must be a Red Sox fan. That's ok, Bobby Doerr was my grand parents neighbor, he told me Joe DiMaggio was the best, and remember he played with Teddy ball game when he hit 406 so there must be something to it, Tedd said Joe was the best as well,

I made a list of the best ten year periods in baseball history ranked by OPS+. That's not the end all/be all of judging hitting. But it's quick and dirty. Why ten years? It cuts out a lot of the fluff but still gets the meat of their careers. Plus it's a round number 1. Babe Ruth 218 2. Barry Bonds 206 3. Ted Williams 200 4. Ty Cobb 195 5. Lou Gehrig 191 6. Rogers Hornsby 188 7. Mickey Mantle 188 8. Mark McGwire 181 9. Mike Trout 178 10. Honus Wagner 176 Notably absent is your pick of Willie Mays. He ranks 18th with 166. Tied with Frank Robinson and Willie McCovey. But that's because he was consistently good for a long, long time and didn't have singularly spectacular seasons. As a hitter. Same boat as Hank Aaron who ranks 24th with 164. BUT the thing that sticks out like a sore thumb on this list is obviously Mark McGwire. Who, steroids aside very very obviously is on nobody's list of top ten hitters of all time. To me this basically proves the effect of that era on stats. If you toss him off the list.. and only use Barry Bonds "clean" years for this experiment the new list becomes: 1. Ruth 2. Williams 3. Cobb 4. Gehrig 5. Hornsby 6. Mantle 7. Bonds 179 - new total 8. Trout 9. Wagner T10. Jimmie Foxx 173 T10. Stan Musial 173

Great choices, Matt. Further point on Ted Williams. In 1957, at 39 years of age, he led the AL with a .388 batting average. The following year, 1958, at 40 years of age, though with "only" a .328 batting average, he again won the AL batting title!

Just out of curiosity what is your opinion of Joe Jackson? Personally I think he is if not the best, one of the best forgotten players in baseball history. His career was cut short but he still was considered one of the best hitters of all time.

Of the top of my head Ruth Griffey Aaron Bonds Williams
Matt I've got a tough question that may paint you into a corner and could be hard to answer, just generally. Around the McGwire / Bonds / Sosa steroid home run race period of MLB my dad (pretty traditional dude) told me that if it weren't for steroids baseball may have fallen to being the least watched major sport in America. He said it revitalized the game from multiple perspectives especially the one that counts most: viewership and fan interest. There's no doubt watching home runs is electrifying for everyone watching and in attendance not to mention watching sluggers chase home run records is the thing of legend. There is no argument there. That said, what are your thoughts on steroids being a boon for baseball? I know nobody inside the MLB nor current (and probably most past) players would admit what I wound up agreeing with my father over but I'd love to pick your brain and see what your thoughts are. I also understand if this isn't enough meat of a topic to create a whole video as well. Regardless keep doing your thing. I haven't played baseball since I was around 9 or 10, I always loved it but opted for lacrosse (sorry) but I still enjoy watching and never stopped. Watching your videos makes me want to go out and be a coach or something. You should let me know how I can send in my resume to you! ;) Thanks a lot!

not for top 5 all time. he was a career .303 hitter and only led the league in batting average 3 times, never even hit 20 homeruns in a season and ended with only 160 total. his major talents were playing a lot of games, getting a lot of at-bats, and doing it for 24 years.

Pete Rose was great at the game, but he bet on baseball and lied about it. Then after all of that we find out he was cheating on his wife with a 16-year old girl. I have no sympathy for him. #bannedforlife

Honorable Mention for Rose. Didn't have the average to make the top five. Top ten for sure.
