Totally agree about Kenobi. Was lucky enough to meet Mr. Miller at Star Wars Celebration 2015 and got my copy signed. Like you said, it's a space western and alll the other characters are so well fleshed out and interesting! It was thanks to this book that got to me to check out his other work, including Star Trek.

I just stumbled onto your channel, and it's great to find someone who marries discussions of SFF with Star Wars / Trek, all things I love. Those were the first adult books I read and they sucked me into weekly visits to the SFF section of the library. The very first Star Wars book I read was a standalone, The New Rebellion by Kristine Kathryn Rusch. It will therefore always have a special place in my heart. Great list! I, Jedi definitely a controversial pick, but Cloak of Deception is incredible. It helps to explain a lot of what was going on in the republic, to set up The Phantom Menace. I also find it added to the experience of Episode I. I personally am not a huge fan of Outbound Flight, seemed a little too unfocused to me. Kenobi is great too, really love how it didnt really focus on Obi-Wan funnily enough. Great list. Very unique and not your standard legends list. Have you read the Coruscant Nights trilogy and Last Jedi? Those are some of the most underrated Legends books, similar to how you mentioned with Knight Errant

I enjoyed Knight Errant, particularly the Sith grandmother. The portrayal is absolutely great showing that she is both human, and so loves her children and grandchildren and wants them to succeeed, and is simultaneously a Sith Lord who turns her family against one another to discover which will be a worthy heir. And in the middle, she plucks the most helpless and hapless of her grandsons from the midst of the fighting because he is disabled and unable to control his power and would be the perpetual victim of his sister simply because, "There were grandmothers before there were Sith." Nor does she make some of the foolish sacrifices of subordinates that other Sith do and seems immune to the more aggressive forms of hubris that plague the Sith. While she does not particularly like Jedi, she sees one in her domains as nothing more than a trial for her grandchildren to pass. Alk of that being said, I have my own favorite stand alone novels, and they are not without their controverial elements. 5) Crystal Star-perhaps the most controversial entry on this list as many people who read it dislike it along with; 4) Planet of Twilight-this tends to ranked second in negative reviews while; 3) Death Star-does not appear to be considered for any listing either good or bad. 2) Plagueis-possibly the best Star Wars novel ever written and a brilliant tie in to all of the pre-Phantom Menace novels. 1) Darksaber-I enjoyed this and it was just fun. This is my list today, other potential entries might have included: Death Troopers, New Rebellion, and Shadows of the Empire.

I liked that the prequel novelizations each had their own little prelude novels. I really enjoyed cloak of deception and labyrinth of Evil. I was not a fan of outbound flight. I remember thinking Zahn is better suited to post-rotj material. He portrayed the Jedi as totally inept, obnoxious, and palpatine as just doing what he was doing to save the galaxy from a greater threat. I dunno...seems like a pretty big retcon to me. And of course, Thrawn has to be the ultimate, most noble, most intelligent man ever in his books. My favorite Zahn novels are the Hand of Thrawn books and Survivor's Quest(which is the sequel to Outbound Flight, or rather, Outbound Flight is the prequel to Survivor's Quest).

I'm surprised to see Knight Errant in your list. Nobody really talks about it. Would you recommend reading any other books before this one, or does it work well as a standalone (with the comics, too)? Cloak of Deception is an excellent inclusion. It's a perfect prequel to Ep. I (and I think reading it and the Ep. I novelization makes the film a great experience, since you can fill in the blanks with the books' information).

There isn't one specifically on his backstory. The Jude Watson "Jedi Apprentice Series" kind of hints at his backstory in Legends, and Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are the primary characters of the novel "Master and Apprentice" in canon, but nothing with lots of backstory that I know of in the literature. It might however be in the comics.

I went back and forth on putting that book on the list...there’s just so many good standalone books! It’s for sure in my top 10.
