Thanks for the video Phil the best mental game advice I've received over the years has come from you. Regarding the last point though I gotta disagree. When the fish asks you about what you had I think you should engage and make his experience pleasurable even if you lie about your hand. Part of our job as a professional poker player is to entertain the recreational players rather than just take their money in silence.

@phil galfond how should we adjust to a pot sized cbet? Playing live 1/2 I feel like some of my opponents that are mostly TAG seem to fire a pot sized cbet after raising preflop. Preflop raise is 7x-15x ( standard raise in my local game) and they are cbetting on almost every flip even ones that don't favor their range. Should I just over fold?

I NEED AN ADVICE. Hi, I just played online poker one on one at Texas Holdem no limit. My opponent was always rising and over rising each time, no matter the cards that he had. Even if I had QQ on pre flop and K 8 8 on the flop, i finished by let go. I began the game with 50 $. I followed 3 times, I won once of those, I let go the rest of time. I finished with 0. What would be your advice before such an agressive player ? Thanks.

Hi Mr Galfond, i have a message for you. Thank you for your videos. I am a very casual player and i know the swings of poker. Over the period of 2 months i got it in with an edge ( lets say 55% or higher in 95% of my pots). Playing very aggressively being i think i am high variance player, really not sure. Still i am losing. When i have good month i make tons of money but when i have a bad month its so, well it feels unfair. :-). I know its not unfair :-). Do you think its a good idea to to make spreadsheets of my winning months to remind myself its only a matter of time when it mathematicly will go my way again?

You can gain an edge by giving away free info; by making friends at the table. I cant tell you how many times a recreational player basically adopted me as his best friend and started softplaying me, showing me every hand I fold, heck almost colluding trying to get me out of pots when he has a monster vs another player, all because they liked me because I kept up a rapport with them. The funny part? I maybe showed them one hand out of 4 hours, while they showed me at least 50.

Dr. Tricia Cardner mentions this in her poker books too. Her and Elliot Roe have done a podcast series together where I first heard this iteration. I believe Phil is referring to Mental Contrasting. I had few brutal sessions with a bit of tilt with them lately. After them I try to remember not to focus on results but just on the game. Whenever I start thinking how much I am up / down now, it is time to take a break or quit altogether for that session. Another thing that changed a lot was the way I think while I start playing and while I play, I thought "Just do whatever you want, play however you want to." Because basically, I believe I do know how to play well enough, it's just the execution that is lacking. But trying to force it does not help but just puts mental strain to myself, instead of that I thought "I'll do whatever I want to", since I want to play as well as I can anyway! Since then I have had few much better sessions in all ways...

I really enjoy your channel. Although I barely play poker I am fascinated by the game and it's mental and philosophical aspects. I find I can learn a lot by your approach to the game and apply some of these concepts to my own life in general. The idea of opportunity cost for example can be applied to any decision, not just poker. The ethos of focusing on the medium to long term and looking past daily "variance" in mood swings/motivation etc. Teaching yourself to see the positives in the right play, even though you've "lost"... So many valuable lessons!

I do the 'just say yes' thing but with 'maybe'. If you say "yes" to their first question and it was spot on then they might adjust in the right direction.
@matta5749
Жыл бұрын
If you say yes every time then you aren’t actually telling them anything even if they’re right (that’s also the entire concept behind balance in poker). If they change the way they play against you based on faulty info then (1) they’re the one losing edge and (2) you will be more likely to predict where they could make mistakes than vice versa. Also saying “maybe” is less likely to get the person to leave you alone and could even seem provocative.
