"They're on my remote every time I fly." That comment hit home. Never know when that antenna booster will be needed, so good idea to use every time. I admit to only using mine once when I got it, and then it has sat in the drone's case since. Should I need it, when seconds count, it may very well be too late to fiddle around with putting it on. I'm going to make it part of my usual routine.

Hey I was wondering if I could bring the Mavic Air batteries on an airplane. I used to have a phantom 3 standard and was allowed to bring its batteries on carry-on. I ordered another battery for my mavic air and on the package it had a sticker that said it was not allowed upon passenger aircraft. I was just wondering the policies for that. Also I was even more curious because you said you took the mavic air on the plane.
@Dronevalley
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post and you'll be fine taking the Mavic Air batteries with you on the airplane. The only rule is that they have to be in the cabin with you and can't be in your checked baggage. The FAA regulations restrict these cells to be low 100Wh and the Mavic cells are well below this limit. Most airlines are fine with 3-4 cells as long as they are more than 50% discharged and the connections are protected from shorts. I use Lipo bags with mine and have never had an issue. They are an inexpensive way of protecting the cells when you travel.

It's nice that you're creating content that you like, but as a viewer, I want snappy content where I get a brief explanation as to what the product is and how it's beneficial to MY experience. I don't need to know about the strength of the metal for the joysticks, that's not the product. I did end up watching some of this but I watched the content at x2 Speed and skipped some of the boring parts, you're taking to people as if we can't see the obvious you could've easily cut down the content by about 1 minute from each 'product' by skipping the "you're going to be doing this", we know that I just want to know what the product is. I'm giving you constructive criticism, ignoring it is up to you but you'll never improve your content if you just come back to me and others with what feels like a "you're wrong" comment, I'm not looking for an explanation as to why it's so long, I'm letting you know if I'm to subscribe and watch your content often, I want snappy content.

I'm a bit sceptical of the reflectors, though I admit I've never used them. The thing is, the signal from the antennas that bounces off the reflector travels twice the antenna-reflector distance more than the direct line distance from the antenna. At 5.8GHz, one quarter wavelength, and so the difference between a power peak and a zero is 1.3 cm. If this is twice the antenna-reflector distance, what benefit do you gain from them?
@Fluterra

Yeah, umm, WiFi signals can’t be redirected using a parabolic reflector. Comparing to visible light and even dish antennas is not accurate. The wavelengths are completely different.

So DJI goes to all the trouble of making the control joysticks removable to make the controller more compact and easy to pack away and instead you recommend a case that allows you to leave them attached and create a bulkier object to carry? How is that a must-have accessory? That's just for people too lazy to unscrew the joysticks. I've not noticed any issues with metal fatigue or dirt etc in the screw fitting. The landing pad is also not a must-have accessory. Maybe nice to have. I do have one but I find I don't take it with me that often.

Thank you for all your videos and reviews. Unfortunately the tablet holder you reviewed did not work at all for me. Ron, thanks for the post but I have to disagree with you about the range extender. I always test gear before posting clips about it and I have a few clips on the channel showing you how these parabolic range extenders can increase the effective signal strength downfield by as much as 50%. The parabolic principle is a sound one and is used everyday in flashlights and satellite dishes. The theory behind it foes all the way back to the days of Archimedes and it's used in a lot of modern gear. They do a great job of eliminating the wasted signal that would normally be sent back towards you and redirect it downfield towards your quad, give you a more reliable connection. I hope that helps explain it. Rick

I did purchase the fly more combo so I do have a means to carry all in a very efficient package. I do follow your logic about removing the control sticks on a frequent basis. Even if you only had the charger to take along, are you just leaving it loose in your luggage?

Thanks for the post but if you understood the science behind these, you'd understand how they work. They are based on the parabolic principal that is used in everything from satellite dishes to flashlights. It's a very sound technology that dates back to ancient times and works well to focus a beam in a particular direction. I did a clip on the channel testing these (you can search for it) and found that these reflectors increase your signal strength by over 50%, which equates to a longer distance when flying. I use them every time I fly so they really do work well. Rick

My issue is with the OTG cable I bought; it doesn't transfer the battery or height distance information, the DJI app only registers n/a and I have found the other people have the same. Is this because DJI do not support the cable and should I bought a different one? Thanks
@Dronevalley

Simon, thanks for the post and that issue with the cable is an unfortunate artifact of the last firmware update DJI released. Currently those details are not visible when you're using the cable bu I'm hoping it will be corrected with the next update. You have the right cable but they "broke" this functionality wit the update. If it's any consolation, it's missing as well when using the DJI goggles so that gives me hope they'll get it sorted. Rick

The Air Range extender is a great idea and add on especially in high tree density areas with a lot of Wi-Fi signals. I have designed many RF antennas over the years and the principle is indeed sound. My only concern would be if the manufacturer actually made them the exact size and depth for a parabola required for a 2.5Ghz Wi-Fi signal. Efficiency is the key. I have found that a large tin coffee can cut in half from top to bottom matches the exact frequency of the signal on the lower Wi-Fi band that this drone uses. This item looks like it will work better at 5Ghz.

Thanks for the post and I know it looks like the antenna might hit the tablet but the holder is not normally in the full down position like that. When you fly you normally have the display facing you at a steeper angle and the antenna won't have any contact. Also, it's a new holder and as I mentioned in the clip you can tighten tha hinges to suit your needs. Some folks like them realyl tight where nothing modes and other (like me) prefer them a little looser so I can move the tablet as needed. I hope that helps explain things. Stop back soon as I'll have more clips posting this week. Rick

The Mavic Air is an amazing quad and a lot of fun to fly. These accessories will help make your flights a little safer and more fun. Thanks for posting and I hope you'll stop back soon. Here's a link to the accessories I covered - www.dronevalley.com/store/c14/Mavic_Air_Accessories.html

Sorry mate but everything in this list is shit apart from the controller case. But that is my opinion. Also a very helpful think to have is ND filters.

Jason, thanks for the post but I have to respectfully disagree with you. Everything I covered in the clip is in my kit and I use the accessories every time I fly. Each of them serve a different purpose but help to make the flight better or protect the quad. I left out the ND filters because a lot of new fliers don't know they need them and I'll be covering them in another clip soon. Be sure to sub the channel so you don;t miss anything. I'll be at the DJI event this week in NY and have a lot of coverage from the event. Rick

Question. Does the spark communicate directly to the tablet or phone or to the transmitter for WiFi. If so how is the transmitter talking to the tablet. I assume the transmitter is using the tablet just for communication to the app.through the usb cable ???

In the standard setup, the controller "talks" to the Phone and the Spark through two different Wifi systems. The one between the controller and the Spark is very strong and provides the distance for flying. The one used to tether your phone is weaker but provides communications to your phone from the controller. If you use a cable between your phone and the controller you eliminate this Wifi link and are connecting directly. This provides a more stable and reliable signal and also eliminates the need to have Wifi turned on for your phone, saving you battery power. I hope that helps and thanks for the post. Rick

I'm new to flying. Considering purchasing a tablet to use as my screen when flying. Do I need an expensive one even the SD card will be recording all of my flight footage?

Rick, the GOPRO Casey does it all. I watched another guys demo and you can store even some batteries in the Casey. Checked one out and it does work as a small but utilitarian carry case.

Ken, there are a lot of smaller "combo" cases on the market for the Mavic Air and I've actually been testing a few of them for the past few weeks. I'll be doing a clip to review these in a week or so to try and help point out a few differences. While I do like the combo style cases for daily travel, I still prefer the split cases like I showed in this clip for travel. They just seem to pack cleaner in a larger suitcase. Stay tuned as I have a pile of other gear I'll be reviewing. Thanks for the post! Rick

Sorry Rick but why you don't have a singe video flying a drone?

Oscar, I actually do have a few older clips with me flying my quads and I do fly in clips where I'm out in the field from time to time. The reason I haven't posted more of them is that they are not that popular with my subscribers and they take the same amount of effort as the other clips I do to produce. I fly almost every day, all over the country when I travel but folks seem to enjoy the other clips more so I have been focusing on producing those. As the weather turns warmer at home I'll start posting more outdoor clips of both new quads I'm flying and submersibles I'll be testing underwater so please stay tuned to so you don't miss those. In the meantime, search my channel for "Barnegat Light" "Holgate" and "Serpent Mound" for a few clips of my Phantom 4 in action. Thanks for posting, Rick
