I'd put Natalie White up there with Vecepia...especially when the main reason Natalie doesn't get the credit she deserves for how good she was socially was because the season was edited to be basically a season long promo for Russell's upcoming HvV appearance, so naturally we just had to get the 100+ confessionals of Russell saying how he's the greatest of all time, and no focus on why Natalie won, including her answer to Kelly's jury speech that sways the majority to vote for her over Mick (which, anyone who thinks Russell ever had a shot to win Samoa was either fooled by the edit or somehow still fails to understand the importance of jury management in Survivor)
@handsoaphandsoap
11 ай бұрын
@@NYChica23 Even all that aside, Russell's strategy in Samoa was kinda ass tbh. He intentionally sabotaged his team which caused them to go into the merge down in numbers and completely antagonized everyone on the season. There are multiple tribals where he had gone out if it weren't for the actions of specifically Natalie. Most notably the Erik Cardona move is all Natalie, she makes the social connections that convince the Galu members to turn on Erik, someone who was not only the most strategic threat on Galu but also the Galu member holding their idol. If that move doesn't happen, Russell certainly goes out the following tribal after having to use his idol in the merge vote. I also believe she would've had a good shot at hanging around in the event of a Pagonging, she at the very least would've been the last Foa Foa targeted and I don't doubt that she'd be able to Danni Boatwright her way to the end in that alternate scenario by cozying herself up to the Galu women.
@NYChica23
11 ай бұрын
@@handsoaphandsoap We definitely agree on that, because everyone gives so much credit to Russell for being able to overcome an 8-4 disadvantage, that they forget that the disadvantage probably doesn't happen if he hadn't somehow decided that weakening his tribe when they still needed to win challenges was a good move. And while everyone thinks Natalie would've been the easy target without Russell there, they forget that Russell would've gone early merge if he didn't have Natalie there to make those inroads with the Galu majority

Guatemala is my favorite theme for a season ever. It was jaw dropping to see the ruins the tribes inhabited. The scale and mystique of the ruins, rich with history and mythology, Guatemala was such an amazing location and it made the season even better. I think Panama/Exile Island is a surprisingly underrated season. There's so many incredible narratives, fun personalities, and good strategy that generally prevails despite the chaos. While LaMina is a bit of a low entertainment tribe, I don't mind when Casaya is just THAT entertaining. Though it seems like Panama is typically ranked in the top half of seasons, I rarely see it in the top 10. For me, Panama is one of the most entertaining, well-rounded seasons and I wish it got a bit more credit than just "a decent season with a pretty wacky cast."

I completely agree about SJDS. It’s criminally underrates and has a great cast. So many legends came from that season. Also the post-merge is strategy at its absolute peak, especially Natalie’s endgame. She practically taught a masterclass in how to win based on strategy. The post-merge of that season was the only one that had me truly shocked almost every episode by some crazy move. Yeah, the pre-merge was a little slow, but there were tons of iconic moments and legends who were pre-merge boots. It wasn’t awful, it just seems bad because the post-merge was one of the best in the history of the game, yet the season is rarely ranked highly in people’s favorites

My choices for five most underrated: 1. 43. Honestly, I think this one is a top-tier season with some fantastic characters in it. People just got so distracted by who was getting the winner's edit that they failed to look at the story they were telling, and I think it's an excellent one. 2. Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers. The finale leaves a sour taste in people's mouths, but honestly it doesn't invalidate what I think is an excellent season that came before it, and I feel like even though Ben as a character makes more tragic sense if he goes out due to an upside-down U, I like that he actually wins here, and it makes a great prelude to Winners at War when he has a different goal in mind than winning. 3. Thailand. Yes, it's dark and unpleasant and hardly escapism, but no season really shows the human condition more than this one. To watch the "good guys" in Sook Jai get picked apart so thoroughly, and to see Brian's methodical march to the end is like watching a Terminator stalk his prey. I wouldn't say I enjoy it, but I think it's easily the most underappreciated old-school season and unfairly at that. 4. Edge of Extinction. Hear me out, but there's gold in them thar hills. You've got a controversial format change but this cast justifies it, because you get to see the bitterness unfold in real time as people get voted out and have to be forced to sit with those whom they blindsided. Reem hazing each person who came to the Edge was comedy gold. Devens was great fun (I know he's controversial in that respect, but I liked how he embraced his second chance and just threw everything at the wall to see what stuck), the David/Wentworth arc was great, Aubry ends her Survivor run in almost a J.T.-like fashion, and the finale was truly nailbiting TV. Maybe it invalidates the format of what Survivor is all about, but as far as entertainment goes, I like it. 5. Worlds Apart. Mario Lanza has done an awful lot to try to rehabilitate this season's rep, and he could articulate why better than I can.

43s editing was pretty bad imo, I still don’t know what happened on the Dwight or Jeanine votes and a lot of the tribals are extremely predictable Ex: James, Ryan, Sami, Karla. The premerge was a slog of predictable vote outs and uninteresting dynamics: basically only Elie vs Gabler and Ryan “throwing the challenge” I did like Gabler winning and it def shocked me so at least the ending was alright
@stephendavis6267
11 ай бұрын
@@XanderMatthews-nv9zf I don't need unpredictable tribals; sometimes the best tribals are the ones that are a foregone conclusion. As for the Jeanine/Dwight stuff, I really liked how the show portrayed those in retrospect, especially as it pertained to the idol switcheroo. I feel that 43 benefits greatly in our modern binge-all-at-once consumption of TV, rather than the weekly ones, but I really like it when they shake up the format. Predictable vote-offs or not, those early boots had an impact on characters. Voting out Nneka caused Cody and especially Jesse great heartbreak (leading to the theme of family that played heavily on Jesse, which led to him inevitably having to turn on Cody). I know it's not for everyone, but 43 is a season I think will benefit greatly on rewatch more than most, especially when people cool off on the Gabler vs. Cassidy discourse.

Ah man, your commentary on The Australian Outback really made me miss when they went to unique locations. When are they ever gonna encounter flooding and wildfires and torrential downpours in the same season again? Simply starving castaways in a tropical paradise for 26 days just isn’t the same as the real struggle to survive in the earlier seasons. As for my pick for underrated seasons, I’d probably go with Nicaragua and San Juan Del Sur. Everyone’s always waiting for the next Gabon, but Gabon 2.0 was just 4 seasons later. Nicaragua is a mess but it’s really funny! The double quit certainly knocks it down a few pegs but if you don’t take the season seriously, it’s a pretty good time! I expected to hate it a lot more than I did. San Juan Del Sur on the other hand is really a fantastic season that I don’t feel like gets talked about enough. The original BvW tends to outshine it but I honestly think SJDS is better. The storytelling is top notch and a lot of the characters are pretty underrated.

I actually think season 5 is the most underrated. It's a guilty pleasure season of mine and ignoring Brian Heidik outside of the game I absolutely loved watching his dominance. He was the first real dominant winner to the point of always going to win. Yes Richard Hatch was dominant but he had obstacles. Brian secures his win from merge on but low key from episode 1 on. He was the young stud of the old tribe and despite his best efforts held onto key votes from people he betrayed along the way. The way he plays his relationships with clay Helen and Ted is masterful. His ability to recognize clay as his golden goose was incredible too as he could have easily went to final 2 with any of the final five no problem. He kept pitting everyone against each other while playing the middle. It says something when the only person to sniff him out was a loved one during the visit. Even then Helen didn't listen to her husband who if we are being honest would have won her the mil if she listened. His awkward hate of his loved one video was hilarious. Ted getting drunk with Helen during the massage was hilarious. Clay just being a dick was fun to watch. Lastly, imo the best pre merge story arc ever was told with Robb Zbacnik. Shi Ann was good too but Robb stole the show. I wish they brought him back. It's funny how school yard pick seasons are sooo damn messy but they are really good as a rare dumpster fire of a season. So what are underrated seasons? Hmmmm. 1. Vanuatu - I know this season has found its fans in recent years, with many saying Chris Daugherty had one of the better jury performances and impressive games ever played. And I agree. It’s always the first four episodes that people aren’t that big a fan of. But even for Seasons 1-9 standards, the first four episodes were still entertaining even if they were a nothing burger. Once that volcano booms, the season becomes fantastic. 2. Survivor 43 - I know it’s a recent season and diehards hate the ending to this season. But this season was an insane rollercoaster ride with some of the best modern survivor playing duking it out. Edit was garbagio for Gabler, but I had a blast with this season. It isn’t all that “amazing” because the winner isn’t “great”, but still a high regarded one for me. 3. San Juan Del Sur - I genuinely don’t understand the hate for this season, well I do for mister baseball himself. But this season was so entertaining, and Natalie essentially played a modern Chris Daugherty game just without the gender imbalance implications. Like watching a living legend dish out what needed to be done. 4. Redemption Island - now I know the eyes are rolling. But if you can set aside on a rewatch it’s the Boston Rob show, and just let yourself get entertained by the hilariously terrible gameplay, it’s actually quite fun. And that’s the only stipulation as to why I add it on here. 5. Blood Vs Water - is it a Renaissance Era or is it a Dark Age season? Personally, I think it was a bit of both. But the cast is why I love this season. So many people playing to win (minus Gervis and Monica). I actually like the Redemption Island battles this season, and it was entertaining all the way through. Now most overrated? (Prepare yourselves) 1. Game Changers 2. Millenials Vs. Gen X 3. Koah Rong 4. Palau 5. The Amazon This is coming from someone’s who favorite seasons are Cagayan, Exile Island (Panama), Vanuatu, San Juan Del Sur, and Survivor 43 with Pearl Islands being the top of my top 6 S tier seasons. So maybe I’m not the best person for this 😅

Guatemala is an elite season! The theme is incredible, the visuals are amazing, and the gameplay was really well done. Danni didn’t have the flashiest gameplay but she maneuvered well to win.

I personally find SJDS is not talked about nearly enough as it should be. Probably the most exciting and entertaining endgame runs we’ve ever seen from Natalie, a fantastic cast of characters, birthed so many survivor icons. It’s a top 10 season for me maybe a top 5.

I think Survivor Millennials vs. Gen X is underrated. It is usually ranked around 10-15, but I think it is easy a top ten season and potentially top 5. You have one of the best pre-merge idol plays in pre-merge history, the shocking Michaela blindside, and the final 10 rock draw. I understand that Adam isn't the most dominant strategic winner, but I think the season has great moments and a really compelling cast.

I agree completely and I think Adams defensive strategy at the final 4 and i think final 5 or 6 are some of the most underrated moments from a winner. The finale of that season with it basically being Adam vs David was incredibly entertaining but incredible from a strategic standpoint!

Not sure I'd say S2 is _the_ most underrated but I definitely agree with your assessment of its much-overlooked positives. Those who dislike it largely do so because it wasn't something that it didn't aspire to be and didn't know it would one day be expected to be.

Brooke Struck was the original pre-swap power player of Guatemala and losing your main strategist that early sucks narratively but she's the key to the early season power dynamics and it's why the season only starts feeling cohesive after said swap.

I recently tried to rewatch South Pacific but stopped because of how they bullied Cochran. It upset me as a teen and it still upsets me as an adult. I'm glad he was a turn coat and that tribe deserved it.

I honestly think that the only change that HHH needed was that the cast needed to know about the fire making challenge at the end. Ben is an underrated winner his idol hunts are insane he woke up hours before the rest of the cast every time it was used.

I think I am starting to break down and put any season with an epic location in the top especially if they have excellent gameplay. That is why Marquesas is aging so well, its also cool that it was made in two months because they were trying to get Survivor: Arabia made but because of 9/11 they had to bail out on it. Guatemala is really good, Africa, Australia, China. What I would love to see is an Atlantic Ocean island or somewhere different than Pacific. Tristan da Cunha, The Azores, Portugal, Canary Islands, Spain, Fernando De Noronha, Brazil, Barbados, maybe Maldives?

I am a hardcore Survivor Fiji (season 14) defender. Rocky ans Lisi were annoying but entertaining, there was great gameplay, Earl is one of my favorite winners, and the there’s a lot of low key funny moments. I get that the “have nots” twist was insanely unfair and all the annoying players weren’t also entertaining, but I love it and it’s so underrated

I really really enjoyed H,H and H and it's over all one of the best. And for me it was either Devon or Ben. And if Ben wouldn't have "idoled" his way, which... They bullied him sooo bad, i am sure, they would have turned on Devon.

Thanks for vid. I think The Amazon season is underrated. Had good strategy play by Rob (the smart Rob 😂.) And good play a Mateus (Mathew). They though he gone nuts when he was sharpening his machete hahahaha. Alot of other seasons are also underrated. Each has a different feel and I thinks where good. I liked the older seasons the most. Now a days, people play knowing too much strategies. People study the challenges to memorize them and too many immunity idols. Russell changed the game when he showed that idols where one of the key game components and very important.
