5. yarra trails - tight technical single track 50km from CBD to sweeet single track Green and blue Black parts 4. Sylvan - beautiful rainforest of Dandenong ranges. Not lots of rocks. Good trail variations. Good gravity and climbing experience. 3. Buxton - close to 1.5hour out. 50km single track. Lots lots berms. Fair bit elevation. Long descents. Crazy gravity trails. 2. Plenty gorge - his fave ever. Over 100km technical single track and tight. Challenging and variation. Chill trails near water tank. Technical rock gardens. Xc MTB. 1. Harcourt. Most comprehensive park near Melb. Built by legit trail builders. Heaps variation and styles. Massive jumps rock rides, caves single track. Lots elevation also. Side of Mt Alexander.

just upgraded my MTB so this exactly what I needed to get inspired to visit some new places around Melbs!... have been doing greens, and now recently some more techy blues, so all of these parks will be great for a look! Thnks for the review! shortcut to what's worth riding!

Yes! Harcourt is amazing! I was there the other day and I rode number 3 4 5 then 2 and I would recommend number 4 if you like big smooth berms and also large rock gardens but not too difficult. But my personal favourite was number 2 because it has some easy jumps and also some big drop-offs, it is a fast trail and fun even if you can’t do the jumps because you can roll over them or just ride over the flat parts.

Best beginner tracks? Just bought a trek emtb (I'm a fat old man just getting into this) and have done Lysterfield once, started on the greens but within 5 minutes got bored so started on blues, only one decent crash, planning on going red hill next, any other suggestions, closer to the peninsula the better.

Sounds like you’re making good progress! Red Hill will challenge you well. Some steep and technical trails there. Definitely start out on the greens and blues (some of which are very rough and more like blacks). Otherwise Silvan is a good option

@@longandwinding interesting, i came off a couple of times at Lysterfield, i have been told by one person to be careful at red hill, but told by some one else that most of their blue trails are more like greens and some of their blacks are more like blues, I'm planning top just read the board at the trail head and go from there.

Thank you so much for this - exactly what I have been looking for. You mention a XC bike can cover 99.9% of all trails in Melb area - do you recommend dual suspension? I don't understand the purpose of hardtails in MTB riding when the easier tracks can be done well with a gravel bike.

It depends what you want out of a bike. Hard tails are really good for building core riding skills, but a dual suspension will be more versatile in the long run

Thanks for the great video. What are your thoughts on variances between Green, Blue & Black trails at different trail areas? I’m new to mtb and my local is You Yangs. I’ve done all the green and most of the blue trails, which I feel challenged yet confident. I visited red hill last week and did two blue trails which were very challenging and was not confident at all, plus a couple of spills. From your experience is the You Yangs ranked a bit high or is Red Hill a bit light? Which would be more typical for other Victorian trail areas? Thanks

There are some blue trails at red hill that are super challenging, especially when they’re a little blown out between maintenance. So yes, I think not all blue trails are created equal
