If you get an engine misfire code on this generation for V6s, there is a TSB out for it. Your coils will likely be fine. This is due to the VCM for cylinders 1-3 that leads to high oil consumption, thus fouled plugs. Piston rings will likely need to be replaced.

I found a reputable small garage that has seen the issue and had a solution. he did a cylinder flush to remove the carbon build up on the rings and pistons on cylinders 1-3 and recommended i buy a vcm muzzler. 260,000 miles 2009 4cyl accord single owner here. (It was my dads and now mine) So far: - VETEC selenoid gasket was leaking - Starter Motor - Powe Stearing pump Oring started leaking - I did rebuild the alternator but it was due to the power stearing leakage dripping over it - AC fan motor - 2 Motor mounts - Sparkplug fail after 250k - Stabilization bar bushings were also replaced AC have never fail and it has the original suspension system - It is a really good car. For a car with that milage those are pretty stupid thing to brake. Most of them like motor mounts and bar bushings not a problem for a lot of people but I hate vibrations and knocking sounds. Sparkplugs and AC Fan motor are just basic maintenance like brake pads Apparently the Vtec gasket and power stearing pump oring are common issues but honestly the stearing pump oring took me 2 minutes to replace and as of this moment im taking a brake from changing the oil and now its time to tacke the vtec gasket, but it doesn’t seem too complicated.

That was 3k miles ago and it smoothed out the low speed shutter. If you do this the process is simple, remove the bottom plastic cover, remove the drain plug and 3 quarts will drain out, replace with 2.5 quarts and top it off as necessary to make it full. I am going to do this 2 more times to get the transmission fluid clean without too much of a shock to the system. Next time at 6k, and then 9k miles should get everything clean again.

Hi! What Motor oil do you use? Brand and viscosity? Maybe switch to a different oil? How often do you change your oil? A quart per how many miles?

@@nicholaspetre1 Hello, I use Mobil1 5w20 full syn as of the last couple years. I do see oil wetness around my oil pan. The car currently has 262k but still runs good. I never really tracked the miles when adding oil, but I notice around 75% and 50% oil life. I’m adding a quart of oil. I’m good at changing oil at 5k miles. I’m currently running the car every other weekend from DC to NC. Doing some research, I’m thinking the VTC Actuator is making the spiny clicking sound during first start ups and long stop restarts and acceleration. Thanks for the follow up to my inquiry.
@nicholaspetre1
4 ай бұрын
@@erscott78 Thank you for the reply. Very good. Glad it is running strong. Stick with the same viscosity,. 5w20 should be fine if you dont have lots of cold starts and city driving. If you do, 0w20 may be a better option. Also, 0w20 has overall a better base stock, more synthetic stuff in it. Also pay always attention to the cSt Viscosity@100C - at operating temperature. Even though Honda recommends SAE20 in North America, the operation viscosity they require is on the higher side closer to 9.0. Their Honda factory oil has operating viscosity is 8.88 and you dont want to use anything thinner for sure. As for the intervals, taking into account the mileage of the car, I would clean it more often if you drive in city. Every time I drain oil from my Accord after 3K miles, I never like the way it looks and I do smell a bit of gasoline. Thats why I stick with 3 mo or 3K miles intervals. The matter is all those oils on the market, they are mostly hydrocracked and they wear out faster. Even 5K miles in a city is kind of a lot. Whatever they write on the jug is BS. Fully Syn oil cannot cost $30 for 5 qts these days. Thats why oil analysis show hydrocracked base is the predominant in the oil. Those which are closer to FULL Syntth with real PAO + Ester base stock cost around $15 per 1 qt - like Redline, Amsoil and others. They can go easily 5-7K in city but still not more, as they seems to hold up pretty well within 5k mi, and then after 6-7K miles in city their compound sags down. As for the brands, I noticed my car works best on Penzzoil Ultra Platinum. Way smoother and quieter than with other brands. Again, inspect your engine for leaks regularly before be sure it does burn oil. I thought my Accord burned oil when I noticed spool valve leak at the back of the engine. Also, regarding oil burn some oils do tend to burn more. Usually cheap stuff. Please pay attention to your oil's physical properties -Noack evaporations loss and others. Oils from better brands tend to stand heat much better. Also, change your PCV valve - might help with oil burn and change spark plugs every 60K miles. Air filter every 10K mi. VTC actuator may need replacement if it bothers you, its time might have come. Frankly speaking if maintain this car properly, 262K mi can be only half life it. This is one of the best Honda engine with no cancer issues like direct injection or turbo. It really can run for long time. Good luck my friend!

@nicholaspetre1 Thanks for the info. I'm not looking forward to buying anything new no time soon. I will consider the oil options and intervals to change. I assumed 5K was standard since shops would put that on the change sticker before I started changing the oil myself. I do alot of city driving so I'm open to the suggestions. Side note, I had a service advisor tell me that the car manuals are designed to keep you in the shop since that's how dealers make their money. Thanks again...

@@erscott78 Well, there are a lot of variables in how people drive and how they maintain their vehicles. Driving style, city/highway driving, climate, fuel and oil used, oil and fluids service intervals, parts quality - it all matters. Service advisors sometimes also can recommend you something you do not need as they also make money. It all comes to common sense. Preventive maintenance is what we all need to do. Take care

I had the same problem with my 2012 Accord. Had a leak somewhere and it was dripping down. Causing the alternator to fail. What I do now is Keep a close eye on any leaks When I get the oil changed. I've also replaced all the wheel bearings on my car. It now has 250,000 miles. As the temperature rises, You may want to think about having your engine steam cleaned so you can better identify any current leaks. I used to live in a very Cold climate similar to Canada here in the States. My cars would always have leaking seals more often than if you're in a warmer part of the US.

Have a 2010 2.4l with 230k miles and never had any of these problems. No mention of the excessive oil consumption caused by a faulty piston ring design? Honda did have a TSB and an extended warranty to repair this with redesigned parts but since it wasn't a "recall" they told no one unless you happened to bring your car to Honda for this issue and only agreed to fix the most egregious cases leaving many of these cars floating around suffering from this issue. The only problem the car has had which I consider to be unusual was the starter died at 70k miles. Replaced with a new part from Honda and has been good ever since. Interestingly, the original starter was tagged made in USA the replacement was tagged made in Japan. That and annoyingly the damn hood strut holder! I've had to replace that like 3 times already. Not only is it an annoying thing to have break, when it does break I have to find a means to secure the hood strut in place so it's not just flopping around. This is especially irritating due to the oil consumption issue which means every 1k miles (about 3 or 4 weeks) I have to pop the hood to top the engine off with oil. Also did I mention how bad oil consumption is for the incredibly expensive catalytic converter?

@@jupiterbullish2520 Yep. Any accord 08-12 with the 4 cylinder will have this issue if the phaser hasn't been replaced already. It's not hard to repair, if you have done a valve adjustment on this engine you are capable of replacing the phaser. My advice is to have a very well calibrated torque wrench for the cam journal caps and to clearly mark the timing chain with a paint marker. The camshaft has a keyway so you can only install the phaser one way

Got the 2,2 turbo diesel. Regular oil changes a must. Rear calipers seize up. Exhaust manifolds crack, this was a silent recall fault so if not serviced by main dealers might not be picked up on, but the main dealers might service your car and turn a blind eye hoping to run out the warranty time. Airbag factory recall,this is a free replacement passenger airbag. Not particularly fast, economical or cheap to run.
