Being driving gas all my life and didn't know much about diesel vehicles until two years ago when i bought an 8 years old Civic turbo diesel. The difference was as night and day. The torque of this little engine (2.2, 140 hp) is unbelievable. When the turbo kicks in, it's a hold on to your hats time. Being driving it for two years, no issues what so ever.

Diesel if you frequently tow heavy loads. Gas if you are like the average family who only occasionally tows a relatively light load. If you are somewhere in the middle ground between those two, that's when the choice gets more difficult. The newer gas engines are impressive. And stricter regulations really hurt the potential benefits of diesel. However, the longevity and power of diesel speaks for itself.

We are planning to purchase a truck next year. We would be towing a camper RV ~8000 lb dry weight. Considering this, the gas powered truck would certainly do it. But I have been wanting to have a diesel experience all my life. But then I took a look at what EPA has done and the issues arising out of it in diesel. I am confused.

I hear ya. I was in same predicament back in late 2017 when we purchased our new f350 diesel from ford. Prior, we had an 03 f250 6.8 v10 3.73 gear by ford and it was struggling to climb any hill even without any trailer attach to it. We have been pulling our 9,000 to 10,000 loaded rv 2 to 3 times a month within 100 miles to 250 miles since Jaunuary of 2018 and present. Our truck is my daily drive and it has 105,000 miles since purchased new. No major problems except steering stabilizer upgrade and with basic maintenance which i do myself often even while camping in the Nevada desert. All are intack and just passed my smog this year here in Vegas. If you use the diesel on its intended use, most likely you will have many years of use without major problems even in stock form. Diesel engines are design to work and to be driven daily or weekly getting to its proper warm up operation. For us, we are glad we got an f350 with the diesel engine because we are upgrading to a much bigger and heavier rv without looking at a different truck and we are lucky we bought ours back in late 17. We like our diesel truck and the empty mileage we save when not towing. Our v10 ford f250 gets 9 to 10 per gallon empty with 35" tires. This truck will be getting 16 to 19 mpg with the same set-up same driver. Although, this might be our first and last diesel truck unless we continue to pull heavy and big in many down we go. The new 7.3L gasoline from ford will be a contender for a diesel with a 4.10 or 4.30 gearing but will not be good as daily driver long distance with the 4.30 gearing in my opinion. Good luck and happy trails!

Good discussion. When I was looking at buying my truck late last year I went through the same talk with my friends. What eventually drove me to buying a gas motor was the maintenance costs my friends were paying. It wasn't even the regular maintenance either. Several of my friends had repair needed in the new emissions systems. O2 sensors, DEF sensors, etc..... and all cost at least 1000 bucks to repair. I ended up with a gas motor. Though I actually ended up with a half ton instead of a 3/4 ton, but that was more to the fact that I found a great deal on my truck.

As much trouble as the emissions are on the diesel trucks, it is not hard to understand why people will remove those systems if they can. If you have trouble with a diesel HD pickup it will generally be emissions related and it can be very expensive and quite maddening to chase them down. Even heavy trucks today suffer from the diesel emissions curse. If I needed an HD pickup I would still buy a diesel, but a lot of the advantages have been regulated out of them.

I bought a 2009 diesel Ram 4X4 3500 because it would be the last truck I''d ever buy. When the time comes to sell it, it'll still look new, have less than 100 thousand miles on it and essentially have been trouble free as it has been so far, runs like brand new. Thing is, buy what you want if you can afford it, especially if you're getting old like me. The upside is, I can tow anywhere, haul huge loads and not worry about straining anything. The only issue I have with it is, I have to drive it like I stole it everywhere I go so it doesn't load up and go into limp mode as it did a few years back when I thought I'd try and see how good of mileage I could get. Thing is, it only gained two miles per gallon over keeping my foot in it all the time. So drive it like you stole it and enjoy your ride.

We pull a 36 foot fifthwheel with a 2010 Ram 3500 4x4, drw, crewcab, full 8 ft. bed, cummins. The truck scales 9180# with a large toolbox, 35 gal. auxillary fuel tank and my wife and I in it. The trailer scaled 14,200 just before we were to leave for Texas for the winter (this weight will fluctuate from time to time) for a total weight of 23,380#. We're pulling the trailer around 5 or 6 months out of the year. We bought the truck new and it took a couple of years to figure out the emission controls (they suck!). The clincher was getting caught in Creede Colorado with the evic telling me the DPF was 80% full and the engine needed to go into regen or we were going to go into limp mode. I called the service manager back home and he told me if the engine did not automaticaly go into regen I would have to take it to a dealership and have them force it into regen. To get out of Creede, either north or south there are 2 high mountain passes and I had no idea how far I would have to go to find a dealership. I asked the service manager if I were to take the truck out on the highway and locked it in 4th gear and ran the rpm's up around 2900 or so it I could make the truck go into regen. He said try it, I did and after 3 or 4 miles the evic announced regen had started. That did it for me. When I got home ALL the emission crap came off and we flashed the computer with a RaceMe tuner. Only added 40 horse so the trans and headgasket would live. We live in Iowa (no smog check) and went through Texas for a family reunion, then up into New Mexico and Colorado and back home, about 3400 miles. I changed the oil before we left with synthetic Delo and the oil is now slightly darker than honey. Before removing all the emissions crap the oil would be black as soon as the engine was started. It is no wonder all the used diesel trucks you see have around 100,000 miles on them, that's when the engine warranty ends. I realize our government doesn't give a rats behind, but these engines won't last if you force feed them their own soot, you turn a 500,000 mile engine into maybe a 150,000 or 200,000 mile engine, MAYBE. This truck doesn't smoke, you can idle it for hours and as clean as the oil stays the truck should last longer than me.

Diesel is the the waste from refining Gas. The EPA and all there wisdom saw that diesel was becoming in higher demand for the transportation of good for corporate America. Then the required refinery's to put additives in diesel that does nothing for the environment. Then the EPA said How can we make more money so the came up with DEF to be added by the end user. So Diesel went from Costing the refinery's next to nothing to produce, too the government sticking there fingers in to the making of a fuel so they can reap the taxes and regulation dollar from it. Proof of this. Here in Maryland we have OFF-Road Diesel that is only use in thing like my farm tractors. only difference is red dye is added to on road diesel and Taxes for on road diesel. Off road diesel cost under $2.00 and on road cost $2.29 in my area. Plus in Maryland there is no emission testing for Diesels

Even though the MSRP is higher, in reality the difference at the dealership isn’t really that much higher so I’m not really seeing what the advantage to a gasser is. Fuel price is about the same. Looking for a used super duty to pull my RV but here's what I ran into. New trucks are out of my price range so I began looking for a super duty at around a $25k max. At that price for 2011 or newer to get the 6.7L is much higher mileage than I want in a vehicle for start, so I decide to look for gas with less miles for the same price. Plus I only tow a 7,000 lb travel trailer maybe once a month so gas makes sense. Towing capacity is never the issue, it's payload capacity limit that you hit first, especially with a family and high tongue or pin weight. And I want a high payload capacity so we can easily upgrade to a 5th wheel later. Like Mr Truck said, it's rare to find a 1 ton with gas, so that leaves a 3/4 ton which has less payload capacity. So the key here is to look for a lower trim package (i.e. XL or XLT) to keep the highest payload capacity possible. You will still find more diesel 3/4 tons than gas, but they are much easier to find than 1 tons. This is why I decided to purchase an older but in excellent shape 2006 F-350 Bulletproofed 6.0 with about 200k miles on it. This should last me many years even as a commuter to work.

If you heart wants diesel get diesel. Just make sure you know what your getting into. To me the 2005-07 6.0 powerstrokes are the best bang for the buck. Because of the issues with the early 6.0's the aftermarket has been generous to this truck and you can pick them up at a great price.

Transmission temps started getting little higher than I was comfortable with and we pulled off the road. Little did we know we were only about 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile from the top. Better a little time lost than a fried trans. You gotta love the Rockies.

Hell yeah they would the 12 valve 5,9 Cummins rock! Plus on the 12 valve ones you can just tweak the injector pump plate to get over 200 extra foot pound of torque, you didn't even have to buy any parts to do it! You can't do that with the ones when they to the 24 valve ones. My dad had a 12 valve that had the injector pump plate tweaked and it was a rocket and I could take it over parleys mountain summit at 135 miles an hour and then he got a 24 valve that was supposed to have more power and it was a dog and even when he went to the 2001 high output with the 6 speed manual it would only do 95-98 miles an hour over parleys summit. That's why back then I knew a lot of guys that would get an injector pump off a 12 valve and throw it on their 24 valve 6 speed manuals.

As someone who drives "Big Rigs" for a living. Any and all of the big rigs that have DEF pretty much suck. Does not matter the make, e.g Peterbuilt, Kenworth, or Volvo. They are always in the shop mainly due to emission related issues. I and fellow drivers have been left on the side of the road due to the red warning of death on the dash. That's why independent drivers go with/purchase glider kits. Basically a new truck with a rebuilt pre-egr engine. You can basically go anywhere, except the Soviet Republic of California. Enjoyed the talk. Do you think electric motors will compete in the future. I can see them out pulling a diesel. Trains have them so why not trucks. A con would be engine braking, they would need bigger brakes or reverse the power in the motor to create drag.

I do not think the engine breaking effect would be greatly effected. As the regen braking can be seriously powerful, and all that extra juice can go right back in the batteries.

Diesel always has less power (horsepower) but more torque. BUT in case of turbocharged gas engine it's different. The same torque as diesel, but significantly more horsepower. I wonder why Americans don't put turbo gas V8s into pick-ups. Those would be insane.

Just one example of top-end diesel and top-end petrol V8: Turbo-diesel: Audi TDI 4.0 V8 - 435 horsepower / 900Nm (663 lbf-ft) Turbo-petrol: MB AMG 4.0 V8 - 604 horsepower / 850Nm (627 lbf-ft) * this diesel uses 2 turbos + 1 electric compressor, whereas petrol only needs 2 turbos to achieve almost the same torque but significantly more horsepower.

I have the Ram 1500 Ecodiesel 3.0. It says it gets 22-28. I get 26 - 30. The 30 I got going 65-75mph 2000 miles back and forth from TX to MN. I play with the MPG meter and at 60mph over a long haul it reads 33 mpg. It stickered for 37k and I got it for 30k. Over 60mph, and you are pushing a lot of air. I think it was $4000 extra for the diesel on the sticker. I figure it will pay for itself in 3.5 years, and then I would get a lot better price than a gas truck. I use Rotella T6 every 8000 miles instead of 10,000. I use Power Service Diesel Kleen to keep the injectors clean and lubricate the fuel pump. I usually never tromp on it, but keep it between 1400 rpm and up to 2000. Guys with Cummins engines roll down their windows to ask questions.

Well, I know this is a different concept, but a couple of months ago, I bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 3.0 diesel engine. It gets the same tow rating as the 5.7 liter hemi. Fuel mileage, of course, is significantly better with the diesel. My experience so far is that I can buy diesel fuel as cheaply as regular gas. Sometimes a little more, occasionally significantly less. I have found that if you buy Diesel Exhaust Fluid at the pump at a truck stop, it's significantly cheaper than buying it at a store or online. I "only" had to pay $4,000 for the diesel option. I wouldn't want this engine in my Shelby GT500, but for off-road, low rpm torque, it's really handy. Plus, it's very quiet and driveable (with the 8-spd trans keeping it on that torque peak). If I were to buy again, it would definitely be diesel in an off-road SUV. I'm not sure about a pickup (mine has a V8 with AWFUL mpg, but I only drive it around town when I need a truck.)

I've had my eye on buying a GMC Canyon with the 4 cylinder Duramax diesel for a couple years now. Not for it's towing ability but for the gas mileage. If I buy one I plan to keep it a very long time. Do you think it's worth buying the diesel rather than the V6 gas model or will the future maintenance and repairs zero out the fuel savings?
@carlwallis5414
7 жыл бұрын
I like some of your points and agree. only thing I have to say is maintenance on a diesel is much less then a gas. also have to look at some of these new tricks where as some things like coolant no longer needs to be changed. everything does add up but they both equal out. both have air filters, diesel will have a fuel filter but a gas has spark plugs and most engines now in trucks have 2 plugs per cylinder. both have diffs and trans and t cases. I think some factors like you where saying come into play such as do you haul and your region you live. it can also go for the environment you live in. if you are in the city more items like air filters last longer then when out in construction or dirt roads. plus you have to think if the engine to. Ford's and duramaxes run a v8 diesel which is fine. but like you said replacing injectors on those is extremely hard as there is no room and on I know fords in order to do that service its removing the cab. of you have a Cummins it takes 1.5 hours to do an injector. I think the last full set of injectors I did on a Cummins was only like 2100 mostly cause injectors are pricey. but I have never done a full set unless someone is running the wrong fuel in them. so lots more factors come in that should be talked about in depth more on these videos. longevity is also higher on diesels. a gas engine with proper maintenance will be lucky to make it to 200k. a diesel can go well over 1 mil without have to rebuild the engine or major work of that such. biggest problem with people now is they are lazy and don't maintain their vehicles anymore nor do they think about keeping them long. they have to have the latest and greatest that comes out every year or two. when the truck they already are invested in can still do all the same things when it comes to using a truck for what it is ment for. I wish I could sit in your videos and talk with you guys.

I understand why, but I dont think some folks may know that full size trucks have a legal weight limit they cant exceed while towing, so that why the heavier trucks have lower tow ratings, you must subtract vehicle weight from the max allowable weight. the diesel engine and trans may be more capable, maybe a video of the the laws regarding towing certain amounts of weight, you guys touch on it other vids, but even if a fullsize could tow 40k lbs you have a cap at say 30k lbs and what type of license you need for various load sizes and trailer sizes, I'd love to know more, even though I could go look it all up,

Maintainance: All the trucks my dad and I have owned were diesel and we still own them. The only maintainance we had to do was oil changes, never had any major problems and we fix everything ourselves(tierods, bushings, shocks, and other small repairs) In my experience maintainance its not expensive, if you buy the right oil, filters and most importantly good tires. Both trucks (1989 and 2011) have around 330000km, they run perfectly fine and have deleted, catalytic, EGR, and the new 2011 truck is chipped for better fuel economy(this truck gets 17mpg when pulling massive fire wood loads in the mountains. lots of up and downs.) The only thing that could be considered more costly for the diesels are the oil and grid heaters that are timed to run in the mornings for an hour before we start the trucks. This is expensive especially, because winters here take around 6 months every year. The grid heaters are only used when the temperature outside is bellow -10°C, which it is almost all the time. Compared to my VW passat gas that has no issues starting at -20°C without grid heaters, but I still plug it in anyways. Overall, it depends on the persone, some people think that pulling small quad trailers or boats on a gas truck means you still have the exact same oil change period is just shortening the engine life therefore, it is even more important on a gas engine, because the engine works much harder and faster than a diesel would. That only applies if you tow with the gas truck. This is just my experience, but would be great to hear what other people experienced for maintainance with their trucks.

I live in the U.K and here it used to be Diesels were cheaper for fuel but a lot slower on acceleraton. Then turbo's arrived this made the Diesels on a par with acceleration and very similar price on the fuel. Now a lot of the Tubro Petrol cars are getting as good MPG as the Diesels. Diesels are considered to have less to go wrong as compression ignition bt you will pay more for a Diesel mechanic as there are less of them

Plus on the highway not pulling i get a solid 20. All stock, minus a full 4" straight pipe. No smoke no bullshit. The truck only costs me oil changes and tires, and its on its 3 set of injectors now. Old diesels are wayyy better then new. The day I buy a newer truck it will be a gaser considering all the EPA shit and computers that hinder its mileage and reliability.

DEF is $0.0022 a mile if you buy it at a pump and less if you are tuned correctly (yes that is less then 1 cent a mile). If you are towing with hot EGTs it will clean your DPF while driving basically doing your Regen for you and preventing a regen cycle. With all the EPA CRAP and the DEF system we spit out mostly H2O and nitrogen. Most diesel smogs consist of a much less invasive check compared to gas smog checks, California is a good example.

I agree with a lot what you all said in the video. I like diesel engines, you get more torque and horsepower. At the same time I am saying this I have a F250 with a gas engine. Simple reason the cost factor. It doesn't have the power, fuel milage of a diesel. What bothers me is the problems with the diesel engine these days. You hear of 4000.00 for a set of injectors, head gaskets, egr related problems. One of the biggest problems you cannot idle the engines for a long period of time. If my work was to tow or move heavy stuff I guess I would have gone with a diese truck.

1 diesels have more torque, and normally horsepower at least for HD models because of turbo. 2 they are supposed to be more fuel economical, it is alot more apparent in smaller vehicles though, not everyone get "20+ mpg " in their HDs. most see a couple more miles vs the gas counterparts. 3 tougher sound 4 higher tow ratings, which 1 out of maybe 10 diesel truck owners actually use/need. 5 def -_- 1 gas cheaper to purchase 2 easier to work on / more mechanics available or diy work 3 cheaper maintenance/ parts/ fuel ($ @pump, not necessarily over a course of time) 4 no def or having to delete less than 20% of full size truck owners actually use/ need a truck, this also goes for diesel owners. 9/10 diesel owners just buy them to flaunt around and "to be truck guys". don't be that guy that buys a diesel to go to Starbucks and drive 5 miles to your restaurant management job. we all hate you, and you are making the world a worse place. I think one large thing that doesn't get mentioned much...if you own a business, you're better off with heavy duty truck (over 6000lbs) for the tax write off. If the bed is over 6 feet in length, the max deduction is $25k the year it was purchased....and that can be a HUGE savings. At that savings, you can easily justify a diesel even if you don't really need it, and it'll always be worth more for the years you need another write off, trade it and write off the new truck, so your chance to maximize the investment is always there.

I don't know what the situation, with regards to fuel prices are in the USA, but here in Germany the break-even with diesel is 20,000 KM per year - less than 20K you are usually better off with a petrol, over 20K per year and a diesel makes more sense. That said, diesel engines cost about 1,000€ premium over petrol. Tax is a lot higher (on my Qashqai, I have to pay 150€ a year in tax, my wife's petrol Nissan Pulsar costs around 65€ per year). But the big difference is in fuel consumption. I did a 600KM round trip at the weekend and mixed driving, I got around 3.8L/100KM, which is around 63mpg from my 1.5 diesel. The petrol version (1.2l turbo) is supposed to get 5.8L/100KM or 40.5mpg. With diesel costing 20 - 25c a litre less than petrol, that makes a huge difference in running costs. Both have 30,000KM service intervals and in Germany every car has to go through a bi-annual road safety test, with emissions. Obviously the Qashqai is not a super high end truck, but they are as rare as hen's teeth over here, so I can't really comment on trucks. But given those cost savings, it is little wonder that diesel is so popular over here.

i wish they would of talked about older diesels verses gas. my older 12 valve gets 20 mpgs, i do an oil change once in the spring and once for the winter, unless i do a ton of driving. emissions dont matter for me because the vehicles older than 15 years. banks systems will still blow smoke, its all in the tuning and how the driver programs the computer or tunes the mechanical pump if your trucks owner. the newer the diesel truck the more expensive the injectors. my older one only cost me $500 for a set of good injectors. there are more options to buying diesel trucks than just buying new and sometimes buying old is actually better.

Well when it comes down to it it's what you want / need me personally I love diesel but yes these new ones have some serious setbacks, now the reason I like diesel so much is because I live in Kansas and can put a straight pipe on it with a mild tune and go 500,000+ miles with proper maintenance while having power and fuel economy yes fuel costs more and yes so does maintenance but the actual nature of a diesel is a better system than gas, the fuel consistently lubricates it along with the oil plus all the parts in a diesel are built to a stronger spec than gas so If you keep a diesel within the rev range and keep it well maintained with good fuel in it you've got a good long lasting engine, now when you get to older diesels (6.0,6.9idi,7.3idi,6.2,ect...) you're gonna have to do the upgrades to make them last longer but that's just because it's a factory defect in those engines, no engine is perfect, but even the navistar 6.0 diesel can run a very long time with just some head studs

trent ryan actually, diesel fuel is a few cents cheaper than gas ATM where I live. parts are more expensive, but with PROPER maintenance, they will last longer than gasser parts. and as to diesels sucking, that's just your opinion, diesels are superior to gassers in every way except cost of ownership, which to many, is offset by the pros of ownership

I'll never buy a truck that is stressed the most at idle or low RPM, just like any gas vehicle. Diesel is much more intuitive and "fair" than Gas. And, the second advantage is TORQUE! :-)

I switched to diesel about 6 years ago. I buy during model change and keep them for 2 years at the most. I have never lost money when i trade them in. Diesel is more expensive but they hold the value far better.

I am taking my family and out 34’, 7500 lbs travel trailer on a camping trip around the US for a year or more. Max tow 3.5 ecoboost, 6.2 v8 gas 250, or deisel 250? I will be towing thousands of miles obviously. But we are also expecting to do a lot of driving without a trailer to get to places around the campgrounds. I am new to this world. Any constructive criticism/ advice is welcome.

You guys did a good job summing up my dilemma. Do I buy gas or diesel, new or used? It's hard to justify the cost of a new diesel (even a new gas truck as even base model prices are astronomical) even for farm use. Even pulling livestock trailers and flatbeds around, do you really pull enough to justify a diesel, especially new? Is deleting the emissions equipment going to prolong the engine to help pay for such an investment? Will we be able to keep the reliable like an old 12 valve or will we be plagued with electronic gremlins the day after the warranty expires (that would be my luck)? Will they can the chemical make up of diesel fuel again to f- over he whole computer system? I myself like to add a little Lucas oil to the old tractors because the newer diesel blends just don't lubricate as well as they used to. Decisions, decisions... wouldn't it just be great if our great and wonderful government would just quit f-ing with stuff?

Diesel all the torque, great for cruising. Shame diesel is more expensive in the UK, but I don't think I'll be going back.

What is the difference between Spark Plugs (Gas) and Glow Plugs (Diesel)? Why can’t they be interchanged? Why do some gas engines require higher end gas, Regular, Plus, Premium? If Premium is such high end, why can’t it be used in Regular Unleaded? I know I may sound ignorant, I am just about to turn 16, and get my license, and am just curious. I know my first vehicle is going to be a piece of crap, and I shouldn’t worry about the higher end vehicles, but am interested in learning about them, etc. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Spark plugs produce a brief spark when their pistons are at top dead center to ignite the gasoline and air mixture. Glow plugs get hot enough to the point where they glow to preheat the cylinders of a diesel engine to help when starting cold, since diesels use the heat of compression to ignite their fuel. Glow plugs don’t operate when the engine is running. Gasoline engines with higher compression ratios (usually higher performance engines in sports cars or luxury cars) use premium gasoline because it is more resistant to igniting under the heat of compression in an unpredictable manner that is not in sync with the timing of the spark plugs. It’s not that you can’t use premium gasoline in a car that takes regular, but it doesn’t benefit the engine in any meaningful way, so it’s kind of a waste of money.

I know this is an old vid, and things have changed... but I have to comment on something Kent said. He was talking about the "Pay back" time on the diesel. For the most part, he is correct. but there are a few things he needs to re consider....1) He commented about "How long do you keep your truck" as a point. In the case of a lease... if the residual is projected high... then your payment is low. And in some cases, you may be able to get the Mid-Sized diesel truck for less than the gas. He is obviously not a guy who leases and doesn't understand how it actually works. A lot of times, you can lease the Laramie for less than the Big Horn because of a better residual. 2) He makes a comment about the Mid Sized Diesel being $4k more. Sure... on some level that is true. But if you are someone who was considering a diesel... you are also the same person who would have never considered the gas V6. So, it's really only $2400 over the gas V8. 3) My final point to this is... why do we always talk about "Pay Back" with a diesel anyway???????? what does this have to do with buying a truck?????????? If this was really a valid point... we would all be driving standard cab, stripped down trucks, with plastic seats, and no carpet, and a basic AM/FM radio. (My 86 Toyota had no carpet, no radio, and no rear bumper because I needed that cheap truck out of high-school. FYI, it was $4800 new back then) But we don't. SO... if i'm already going from a $20K base truck, to a $50K Limited.... who gives a rats @$$ if I spend an extra $2400 on the diesel. If I want it... I want it. My 2 Cents... take it for what it's worth.

Outstanding video guys. I am stuck on weather or not I want to go for the ecodiesel or Cummins RAM. I work IT so the real reason I'm interested in diesel is that I want somthing that will last 20-30 years. Any recommendations looking to buy once cry once but you all brought up great points about the amount of maintenance destroying cost per mile savings.

it all depends on if you want the 25-30 mpg with the ecodiesel or the mpg of the cummins. and it also depends on wether or not you are towing constantly, the ecodiesel can tow about 9,500 lbs. the cummins can tow about 15,000 lbs in the 3/4 ton and 30,000lbs in the 1 ton

The ecodiesel has problems with the exhaust cam I believe. There is a gentleman on YT that has a lot of videos about this flaw. Sadly new trucks today will not last 20-30 years unless you remove all the EPA emissions crap. I am in the process of building a truck with a Cummins 4BT diesel. Trucks today have to much computer crap to go wrong. I am sure you already know the components will fail. Good luck in your decision.

Thank you guys for the insight, it's a real shame they don't make these vehicles last any longer, but leaves me with a real question of choosing American diesel or the Toyota which the tundra has proven its 1million mile capability with gas. I never tow more than maybe 3thousand pounds just wanted to longevity of buying and paying off a vehicle and keeping it for good.

I completely understand. All my trucks are 15 plus years old. All of them have well over 275k miles. I honestly will never buy a new truck. As I stated before there is to much computer crap and I just cannot justify paying 60k plus for a truck. What ever truck you choose maintaining the vehicle is the most critical. I have only used Mobil 1 oil and change my oil every 3k miles. Everything else is serviced at 30k. I also started using Archoil products, they are expensive but are well worth the money. All trucks have the original factory motor, trans, etc. I know a few people who love their Tundra's and some that have had nothing but problems. I can say I hear that about any truck brand. Have a good day sir. Jim

I bought a 2001 Dodge diesel for $23,000. It had 57,000 miles on it. It's like new. It's like brand new. I like it a lot. Kind of noisy, though.

Diesels are better for towing but fail more than gas motors. On top of everything behind it is the same as a gas motor so you put more stress on all that. I drive a gas truck and do a lot of towing get decent mpg but do extreme maintenance! Just rolled to 300k and still spinning like a top. Love my truck. love diesels too just can't fix it on the side of the road like my truck.

If you want a diesel find a 92 F-250 with a diesel and never have to smog here in california - plus you have a truck that will most likely appreciate in value unless you load it with miles and treat it like crap.
