Mostly correct but more to a much minor degree than Leyawiin. Both cities are close to the mouth of the niben river which allows access to who enters and who leaves. If cyrodill didn't control the mouth the imperial city would have a really tough time defending the river and having access to trade across Tamriel since it's typically easier to trade by boat than by land.

Regarding Bravil's place as a port, the real question is how long it takes to travel up the Niben to the Imperial City. If the distance is big enough, Bravil could make money selling hospitality to merchants on their way to the City. this video is spreading some minor misinformation. it's not that all khajiit are banned from entering skyrims cities. only members and associates of the trade caravans are prohibited and for good reasons, i mean you can walk up to them clad in guard armour and they'll still sell you highly illegal items like skooma, moon sugar and sometimes even black soul gems, aside from that they are directly benefiting from the civil war (transporting and selling weapons to both sides) which makes them widely unpopular. in contrast to that khajiit who appear to be respected members of society do not suffer from such constrains. obviously khajiit player characters can enter any city freely, but so can kharjo if he is a follower of the dragonborn. additionally j'zargo was able to get into the academy of winterhold, meaning that the guards of winterhold allowed him to pass through the city. last but not least shavari assaults you IN riften after you found esbern, meaning that she too was able to gain entrance to the city.

8:15. I'd like to point out how the drug trafficking of the 1980's ended extreme poverty in Central and South America. Think of all the officials on the take, and all the money laundering through legitimate goods and services. I'd argue that it's the Skooma trade keeping the city of Bravil afloat. No doubt that Bravil and Leyawiin would serve as distribution hubs for Elsweyr's Skooma and Moon Sugar into Cyrodiil. But given Leyawiin's established xenophobia towards beastfolk (unless the traffickers were Man or Mer), Bravil would be the obvious port of call. And Bravil has the shipping to transport the product all over Tamriel. And on a sidenote, Skooma is actually decriminalized in Oblivion. If you acquire the Skooma legitimately, and get arrested, it will not be taken as evidence. I think the Count knows about all of this, and is running a semi-legitimate skooma trade in his city, collecting "black taxes". He permits the skooma trade for kickbacks, which in turn, funds his city. Like the CIA funding a covert war against Iran in the 80's with the profits from Colombian bambam. The little pushers moving a vial at a time aren't who the Legion are after. And the big movers either pay their 50% toll, or get busted. Also makes me think of how the Count of Cheydinhal knows about and collects bribes from the Dark Brotherhood. A little bit of crime in the Empire is politically useful, and is semi-regulated. Too much crime is dangerous. Every empire in history has made use of crime in this way.

@@LeftoverPat What were some points that you wanted to fit into the video but couldn't? For example: Philip's Curve. It's the economic concept that states (past a certain threshold) *more workers = higher inflation*. You probably could do a bit on PC, but that would lead down a rabbit hole of the economies of each town and how cities affect the economy of their surrounding towns. EDIT: Or how would war affect this town specifically. If more people were called to serve in the army, there would be labor being produced in the form of defense, but none of that production would make its way to Bravil. In fact, Bravil would lose out on any production those people could output.

Speaking of sanctioned crime, two things. One, the Thieves Guild is a tool for the Empire to use to acquire items that could not be purchased or negotiated for with conventional means. As a hypothetical, some private collector has an artifact in his collection that the Emperor needs for, say, national security. And the collector isn't selling for any price. This instance is where the Thieves Guild would serve a particular niche function. Two, crime is a great way to redistribute wealth and cycle money back into the economy. Say some rich-prick lord has millions of Gold Septims in his personal vault, and this hypothetical vault is easy to compromise. So, some thief breaks in, steals several sacks of coins. The Lord won't miss several thousand coins when he has millions, right? And the gold stolen by the thief ends up back in the community. The thief hires some hookers, buys some rounds at the tavern, buys some nice clothes or jewelry, buys some drugs, bribes some official, the like. All the money he stole, then spent, ends up in the hands of the community, propping up the bottom line of the City.

I'd point out that a very small number of Bravil's employed people are in jobs that would aid the local economical growth. 11 of them are employed by the city's nobility or church, both of which aren't really industries. The Fighter's Guild is a tiny chapter, more of a waystation. The Mage's Guild chapter is thriving, but only mages have access to their wealth beyond taxation. Ursanne Loch may as well be unemployed. And a huge number of the remaining people are just trainers. So, in terms of actual laborers and business owners for the city's wealth, 12 people, or 20.3% of the population, and even that's stretching to include S'Krivva. This is beyond an unemployed labor force, what labor force they have isn't able to grow the economy.

City Swimmer is totally part of the Thieves Guild. Every indication screams at you in the game if you play it enough. Once she trusts you enough she will tell you how to Join the Thieves Guild. She also lives directly above S'krivva who's a Doyen of the Thieves Guild. The only thing that can throw people off is that she doesn't say "You wear the shadows well, fellow thief" Once you're a member of the Thieves Guild. At least not in the Xbox version of Oblivion

Actually, in the past that was how emperors and their lords worked. A poor city makes the emperor no money and they retain power by making their citizens happy. Emperors and kings who were successful fucked over their lords in favour of their peasants to make themselves more money and give themselves more power over their lands. Also Bravils location is way more important than you think. Bravil sits right in the middle of the only major river between the ocean and the capital city. It's both a military and important trade city. Kinda hard to trade goods with the most efficient ancient trade method when a blockade is stopping you.

This is a great video. It really makes me want a full history broken down by eras of Tamriel in volume videos to keep it short, allow for more views of parts I like the best, and allow for easy to upload videos for you. You know how to make a video. This isn't the first video I've watched of yours that made me want this. Another was the Argonian...uh...boobs video. Not sure why this was so odd to mention. lol

Merchant ships would likely have stopped at Bravil, mainly because tramp shipping is the main form of shipping and it involves stopping everywhere. However, merchants would likely only sell food and city-produced goods to ships because most land-based producers would go to the Imperial City to trade, because it’s richer. Leyawiin meanwhile is far away enough to get a decent amount of locally produced goods. Bravil therefore only really has the docks as an industry and it’s not a big one, and dock areas are always poor due to insecure work. Dock areas are plagued by the sight of workers heading to the dock gate every morning to find out if there’s any work for them. Because of this style of work, dockers have to live near the docks themselves, which contributes to the poverty of those areas. Even with centuries old forms of state welfare, such as English Old Poor Law, or the welfare of the Church, poverty was and has always been an issue in dock areas. Bravil has nothing really to sell to ships beyond bartering a few local items for essentials, so the dock trade is even more depressed than it otherwise would be. Behind every rich merchant city there’s a poor docks area, except in Bravil there’re few merchants and an even poorer dock area
