@UDRichie: If you buy the DVDs you can watch as often as you want. Although I am missing some, I have most, some double due to not remembering which ones I already had & not just on DVD but with SG-1, I have most, if not all, on VHS, which I put into new cases purchased from a friend who owned the Video-Ezy franchise, White for Sci-Fi, Orange for Asian & Martial Arts, Yellow for Horror, Light Blue for Australian, Clear for All others. I have 114 shelves with at least 50 titles plus other shelving of various sizes with Videos & DVDs mixed in alphabetical order. To improve my categorisation, I wish I could add a few more case colours to the videos & buy new coloured cases for the DVDs.

I honestly don't think I can handle watching The Shrine again for the first time! As a man who has relied primarily on intelligence throughout life, like our beloved Meridith, that episode hit home hard. Not ashamed to admit I shed a few tears both times I've seen it. David Hewlett's performance was SO incredibly credible and the cinematography of the episode was so fantastically gut-wrenching... That entire situation would sincerely qualify as my worst nightmare.

The Shrine was such a powerful and emotional episode and is arguably one of the best episodes to come out of the Atlantis series. It's just a pity that Atlantis was ended before its time as think of all the great Rodney stories we could have had. I find that of the two I actually like Rodney McKay more than Samantha Carter as he's actually shown to be human, to be vulnerable and to make mistakes. Sam was very rarely shown that way being a walking dues ex machina in way too many episodes of SG-1.

Absolute genius to turn the weasel we all knew from SG1 into one of the greatest characters from the entire Statgate brand. If they ever return Stargate to us then Hewlett is an absolute must have in some form. Even as a bit part he would lend so much to it. I'd love to see McKay as a 50yo having to work with a younger team in a new setting against a new threat. I think he would have mellowed with the years as we started to see but it would still work as no matter what way Hewlett played it the character was amazing.

This is probably my least favorite McKay episode but then again I can't stand him in any episode except for the one where Shepperd goes 50,000 years into the future. His old self was quite acceptable. No, this episode and all his other appearances he's playing the stereotypical 40 year old virgin geek and this episode was about a convention hall full of them. This was another opportunity for them to get another episode about the evils of global warming, climate change, or whatever the next buzz phrase is. It's called weather and it's been around long before we have.

You do know that in Grace Under Fire, the 'hallucination" of Carter was actually a projection of thought from the swimming leviathan creature and not a hallucination at all? The creature did what it could to save Rodney, by giving him a mental prjection into his mind of the one person who would spur him on and keep him focused at keeping himself alive without panicking. The leviathan creatures were telepathic.

The novels that destroy the McKay character? I enjoyed those but didn't like the authors obvious hatred of Rodney. Then they turned him into a wraith. Now, the wraith angle could be fun but first they killed off everything else about him by simply writing his entire Atlantis life into oblivion. Keller left him, his ego turned people off, etc. Sorry for sounding antagonistic towards the comment, I'm not at all of such an attitude. I am antagonistic towards those novels for what they did to Rodney. They didn't like him so they wrote him out of 98% of it.

McKay is a character that really resonates with me, many times to my annoyance. His intelligence, egotism, selfishness, loyalty, etc. are all traits that I share. I dislike the character just slightly less than I like him. I'm not done with the series; I'm closing up season 3 soon. However, upon hearing of the top-pick, I had to skip ahead to see this. It's strange to see how similar we are, even though he's a fictional character. I, too, am experiencing a degenerative disorder which causes that which I have valued most, my intellect, to recede to a point where formerly simple tasks have become very difficult. I can't remember things and there is much that I no longer understand. I am slowly watching myself disappear as I slip into a mental abyss. This was a very powerful episode for me and I'm very glad to have watched it. It reminded me of the friends & family around me that have gone out of their way to be understanding and helpful, trying desperately to keep me hopeful when, at times, I feel all hope is lost. pisses me off how they dumbed down Sam down when they brought her on as head of Atlantis

well she was in a command position then, so a good rule of command is to let/trust your senior staff do their jobs. if you look back at SG1 and saw how much time she put into problem solving, you can't do that when your in command of multiple departments. So i didnt see it as her being "Dumbed Down" she just didn't have the time. she let everyone do their jobs and picked the best options to move forward with.

I'm surprised that Trio didn't get an honorable mention. Yes its not just about Rodney, but it is one of my favorite episodes.

Not only smart and with a huge ego, he can also see the future. In episode 12 of season 2 he calls Ronon and Teyla "Conan and Xena." Still waiting for Rachel Luttrell to be cast as Xena...

I really liked McKay in SG1's "Redemption," specifically the moment when Sam gets hurt and Rodney shows genuine remorse about what happened.

I'd say Trinity is as much a "McKay episode" as The Last Man is, but whatever. Nice list. Not exactly what mine would look like, but close :)

I'm happy calling "Trinity" a McKay episode. But I'd probably still put it sixth on my Top 5 list. ;)

I pretty much agree with your list and order, but I still like the episode (at least for an honorable mention) where, at the end, he finally nails Dr. Keller. Wait, I'm sorry...he and Dr. Kelly finally express (physically) their love for each other. I don't remember the name of the episode -- Dr. Keller almost drowns, but Rodney saves her, and they're on their way back on a private jet when the opportunity presents itself.

The Shrine is to Stargate Atlantis as the Inner Light was to Star Trek: TNG.

In "Grace Under Pressure", the Samantha Carter hallucination is actually a projection by one of the psychic whale-like animals native to Lantea, and not merely a hallucination.
