For me the Sony 20mm F1.8 G takes the cake! For me, this is the one. Astrophotography, architecture and street. This lens does it all and is extremely sharp. And like you mentioned, the Samyang 85 is hard to best! Nice Video!

If you would choose only one 85mm focal length lens for an wider lens (24mm or wider) 1. Which 85 would you keep 2. Which wide lens would you choose? 35mm lens is not wide enough in some situations (e.g. real estate, vlogging, astro)
@StefanMalloch
4 жыл бұрын
It would be the samyang 85mm f1.4 and a wider than 24 its hard to say in prime. For real estate Iuse a 16-35mm f4. If money is no object then 24mm GM.

OMG fantastic selection. I have Samyang 85 f1.4. Now I'm confused between tamron 28-75, Sony 35 f1.8 and Sigma 35 f1.4. I know the zoom and primes are entirely different, but I'm looking for something for every day use. Thanks
@scottroberts3131

The Tamron is good and pretty reasonable size for a zoom. Wait for Sigma new smaller primes or go with the Sony if you want a prime. I think Tokina is even coming out with some.

@@maxnits9556 Everyone will recommend Tamron as an up and coming for all focal lengths (they have a new lineup coming out). Non-Sony primes, I've seen Samyang or Rokinon (same company) as the top two for primes. Sigma is another, but very pricey.

For those shooting on the A7c, I'd add the Sony/Zeiss T* Sonnar 35mm F2.8 to the list! Truly fantastic body/lens matchup. The new G mini primes are also fine... But the old Zeiss can be had for $350 used.

So I have owned most of these (except the 85mm 1.4 and 50mm 1.8). I think there is one con missing from the 55mm F1.8 and that is the minimal focal distance. It makes it a bit limiting (actually considering selling mine because I don't use it much - more of a 35mm and 85mm guy). Another couple primesI loved.... Sony Zeiss 35mm F2.8. I am about to sell it because I got the 35mm F1.8 - but it was a hard decision. Great colour and contrast - but the key reason it's great is portability. Another one I have that I am selling.... but was great was the Laowa 12mm f/2.8 - such a different look.... it has such a short minimal focal distance that you can get macro like shots and amazing out of focus. Only problem it is a very heavy. In the end I switched to the16-35mm F2.8 (another reason why I wanted the 35mm F1.8 over the F2.8).

Great list, Stefan! As a Fujifilm X-System landscape and product photographer, I am considering selling my kit and moving to FF, particularly, the Sony a7Rlll and some great, sharp lenses like the Sony 16-35 f/2.8 G OSS, the Sony FE 55 f/1.8 and the Sony 90 f/2.8 G OSS Macro. Do you think that this Sony kit would improve my output of 24" x 36" poster prints, over the Fujifilm X-T3 and some very sharp optics such as the ultra-sharp Fujinon XF80 f/2.8 Macro? Thank you sir!

could you make an update video with this topic? there were many changes and new lenses from sony sigma tamron etc. with unter 1000€ and some under 400€ with verry good Performance. i have the sony 85 1.8 and i love it. im thinking about to get the samyang 1.4 85 bcs i love to shoot in night times and also in rain but i think its a better choice to get a more wide angled lens like a 35mm 1.4 from sigma oder the 20mm 1.8 from sony. what do you think? my lenses: sony 85 1.8 and tamron 28-75 2.8 im mostly making street photos but also sometimes portaits and wanna try car photography. and thanks for your great videos. i watched many and they are pretty helpfull and good produced :) greetings from germany

Do you suggest Sony 35mm 1.8 over the Sigma 35mm 2, or the Tamron 35mm 2.8? I Need a lightweight, tropicalized Lens for trekking, travel ( mostly on motorbike), climbing, and outdoor in general.
