You're going to love Ship of Destiny! I actually didn't like Ship of Magic that much but the 2nd and 3rd one in the trilogy are amazing in my opinion! Robin Hobb is just the best.

Of those mentioned I have only read The Shadow of What Was Lost. I read the last 2 books of the trilogy during lockdown last year and am excited to see what Islington writes next. I have yet to read Robin Hobb; I have more interest in her dragon series but have heard conflicting info about reading order.

I’ve heard the Islington books just get better!! Can’t wait to see for myself! I’m definitely no expert about the reading order of Hobb 🤷🏻♀️ I think you risk getting spoiled for previous series if you start further down the list but that you would still understand everything but don’t quote me lol

So many of my favorites on here! Liveship is so good, and the Aurelian Cycle is tied in first place for my favorite series of all time. I expect to be broken by Furysong.

Glad for your progress in the Mad Ship trilogy! I too preferred the second book over the first one (notably for the family dynamics and the politics as you highlighted), and I pitied Althea for what happened to her :(

As a fellow WOT lover, I'm glad you liked Shadow of What Was Lost. I bought the trilogy but it's been sitting on my shelf because I'm on a sci-fi binge right now. And I need to decide what to do about Robin Hobb. I DNFd the first book in Farseer about 20 years ago but I think I just didn't give it enough of a chance. Everyone says it starts slow. Maybe now that I'm an "older" guy I'll have more patience!

Oooh yeah i would say give Farseer another try, you never know - you're a completely different reader now after 20 years!

So glad that you've been able to pull these videos together. Thanks. Malice by Heather Walters - now you've got me interested...I have put a hold on it...and am waiting for it to come in at the library. A Dead Djinn in Cairo by P. Djeli Clark - I picked this series up because of your interest in it and am very grateful. Thank you. I gave this 3 Stars, but it may be me...since I'm not a real big fan of short stories. I just want more. The Wolf in the Whale by Jordanna Max Brodsky - I gave 4.5 Stars. Here is my GR's review: I have been a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which had been my knowledge of Norse mythology. Earlier this year (or late last year) I read Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman. Last year, I watched a few season S2:E8 of The Last Kingdom. Then lately, we have been watching Vikings (still within Season 3:Episode 2), so my knowledge of this culture is growing. This story is very interesting. Having the perspective of this Inuit has been interesting (not a normal narrative). As I was reading this, near the beginning, I kept thinking that the Viking women would be a great addition to this story. Then when she (Omat) met the Viking (Brandr)...I was glad that she/him...hoping she would would become freer. Omat is a really complicated protagonist. Physically she is ugly and small. Not your nomal hero. At first I didn't like her, but as the story progressed...I grew to like her. She just wanted to be an addition within her society. Her desire to be more than was allowed in her society was interesting. She basically wanted agency within her society that men have and women do not. As she came in contact with a Viking, she eventually grew to like him, and he, her (as a him, akin to a brother). Within the Viking culture, women had more agency within their society. So, when it was revealed that she was a women, he cared for her more than he realized as she did for him. The end was adequate, though hoping for something more special. Just me, probably. The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones - as you know, not a fan of Horror. Marie picked it up and she liked it, but said that it wouldn't be something that I would enjoy. I trust her judgment. Survive the Night by Riley Sager - I gave it 3.5 Stars. Here is my GR's review: I've read all his other books...and I believe I've given them 4.5 to 5 Stars. SO, you could say that I really love his style of Thriller. In this story, I was always second guessing his motivation for the way he was writing it...which I do not think is what he was going for. I just didn't believe a number of the decisions that different characters made. I don't want to go into specifics, but I just feel that he was trying to do something unique, and it just fell flat (at least for me). I haven't read anyone else's reviews, yet...but will. I did see that people that I usually trust, felt that this book was a disappointment. You can take that in a number of ways. It was disappointing for YOU because it didn't live up to the hype of all your previous works OR it just wasn't a well crafted story (he tried something, but it didn't work). I liked the ideas within this story...especially the idea of a person going into a movie in her head. That was great. BUT, the characters that she interacts with, it just didn't sit well with me. I will definitely buy/read what Riley Sager publishes next, no worries...it was just that THIS project just fell flat. If anyone else had written it, it would not be even in the mix. His name is getting people to read it and give it a chance. IMO. Parable of the Sower by Octavia E.Butler - I gave it 4 Stars. Here is my GR's review: Not a lot of plot, but more a stream of consciousness. A very brutal world. We walk, run, hide, hurt, cry, laugh and dream with the protagonist...as she seeks peace within Earthseed. It all starts with her, and her family in a walled community...and ends up far away with a new family. Reading this book during the pandemic has been enlightening. Our own world is burning in another way. The things that we read in this book are probably not too far away. None of us are truly ready. We all think things are going to revert to the old ways. In this world of Octavia E. Butler, it will never go back. Everything keep changing. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel. The Broken Girls by Simone St. James - I gave it 4.5 Stars. Here is my GR's review: This is a non-linear story. Not just two different timelines, but at least three (1950s, 1980s and 2010s). It took some time to figure out the POV characters from each timeline. At first, I was confused...till I got to know the main people involved in the story. One of these main characters is a ghost. Very interested web of different threads. This won't be the last book that I read from Simone St. James. Very impressed with the mystery and how it all wrapped up. Maybe we can start a series with these characters. I read more about them, for sure. The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James - I gave it 4.5 Stars. Here is my GR's review: This was incredibly engrossing. I wanted to know who the killer was, had my suspicions, but then got distracted by so many other books (mood reader) and set it aside. Last night/this morning was the day I was going to finish this story. It did NOT end the way that I thought it was going to end. I had realized who the murderer was, but had been distracted by the lie. I hadn't realized what really happened. What a GREAT twist. Also, the way that the story ended, brought a LOT of closure to the story...for all the characters. I will definitely pick up another book from this author. She has proven herself as a great writer of thrillers, in my book. Well done. Jade City by Fonda Lee - I gave it 4.5 Stars. here is my GR's short thoughts (I will be reading the trilogy in a binge mode when the third novel is published in November of 2021): Brutal world. It isn't for everyone, but this is a fully realized world. I want more. I enjoyed all the main characters. Shae is my favorite. I hope her role grows more in the next book. Hilo is a harsh task master. I don't agree with him or even what he does, but his devotion to the family is beyond reproach. Anden was a disappointment. I wanted more from him. Barrowman is like a gnat that won't go away. Ugh. Poor Lon. The Shadow of What was Lost by James Islington - I gave this 3 Stars. Mind you, I had been reading a lot of the same type of Fantasy, and I think this book burned me out. When I read the secon book, I am going to reread this one and see if I lke it better. Should be doing this in November to December. Midnight Library by Matt Haig - I gave it 4.5 Stars. Here is my GR's review: Reminded me a lot of Quantum Leap T.V. show. Jumping in and out of different versions of the life she could've lived. It also reminded me a little of the Firebird trilogy by Claudia Gray. Different dimensions and versions of us. This book also deals with how we view ourselves. Never giving up, but pursuing our best selves. I think this is a great book for people suffer from depression and anxiety. Thanks to Britt, from Basically Britt KZitem channel for the recommendation. Okay...please take the next few reviews with a GRAIN OF SALT. Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb - I gave it 3 Stars. Here is my GR's review: When I first read this trilogy, I had just binged the Farseer Trilogy...and rated each book better than the previous. The more time I ponder this series, the less I like it. 4.5 Stars - This was my initial rating, but I really feel it doesn't hold up. When I do a reread (which I eventually will...I will re-examine my thoughts, but I think I will lower this rating to 3.5. Yeah, a full Star lower. I was riding a high...when I wrote, "What an amazing story." The more I think about it, the more frustrated I am with it. The characters (all new) are not even closely as great to get to know. The longer the story went, the less I cared about any of them...really. It wasn't until I watched Michael Knipp's review of Ship of Magic that I "owned up" to my real feelings for this book and trilogy (in general). There those I have come to love (Wintrow, Althea and Brashen), but there are some that I actually have come to despise (Kyle, Kennet and Malta). Looking forward to continuing this trilogy. Oh, and the ships are characters too. SO...for those who see these changes from my initial thoughts...they were not taken lightly. I have pondered it for a long time. Even to the point, that I have not started another one of her books since finishing this trilogy. Ugh. The Mad Ship by Robin Hobb - I gave 3 Stars. Here is my GR's review: Initial rating was 3.5, but I have adjusted it to 3 Stars. Sorry, not sorry. I originally said, "I like the characters, but not so much the story." Well, I have come to say, after pondering it while longer...I really didn't like the characters that much, really. I also grew to despise the story or the lack of story. I also really disliked so many of the characters and their motivations. The more I read, the more I hated them. Every once in a while...they would do something good, but then negate it and push the arrow further away. Ugh. Fireborne and Flamefall by Rosaria Munda are books that I have bought and am waiting for the final book to be published. I was going to read them, now, but I hear that there is a cliffhanger at the end of each book. No, I don't do well...when that happens. So, I am showing patience...and am waiting for the third bool. I got these books BECAUSE of your love of them. I look forward to reading them. Thanks again for a wonderful video.

@@BedtimeBookworm - Oh, I totally understand what you mean. It may have been the way I was receiving it. On a reread, I may readjust my thoughts...knowing the larger tale. We'll see. BUT, I really agree that Robin Hobb is really good at evoking emotion (good/bad).

I'm so nervous to get into Robin Hobb, all the books sound so amazing but I'm not sure I'm ready for the emotional roller coaster, lol. Glad to hear the consensus on Flamefall is really positive, read Fireborne a couple of months ago and loved it. Can't wait to get to it!
