gregory howarth my amp has reverb or delay option one or other. And then one of these four at a time but they can’t be combined :( chorus flanger phaser tremelo.. with that in mind what is the most important pedal for me? I also bought a cheap distortion(danelectro fab distortion) first thinking I needed it but it’s no better than the gain on my amp I almost wish I would have went with overdrive and not distortion I think I’m a little confused about differences with gain overdrive and distortion cuz people act like they all the same, but I’m new so I dunna. Opinions? I really want a wah next but need a looper too uggghh MONEY PIT lol keep in mind im just learning to jam out in my room not on stage.

@@brucelk19 i think that distortion is just a little heavier when it comes to mute the strings with your left hand and another difference i found is the intro of iron man (black sabbath) sounds a little weird with overdrive but that's pretty much it.

Great advice Marty. I use a looper for practising my soloing skills and an overdrive pedal is always good if you want to heard above the rest of the band when you take a solo. I also have a Dunlop Cry Baby though I use it sparingly as too much wah wah can be tiresome. I also play slide on a Danelectro 56-U2 and find that a compressor pedal comes in useful to get more sustain. I used to have a Dynacomp but eventually splashed out on an Origin Effects Slide Rig to get that Lowell George sound. I find the built-in reverb on my tweed Blues Junior is more than enough but I do like the shimmer of a tremolo pedal every now and then.

This is the order I bought my pedals. Distortion, wah, overdrive, a second overdrive and wah (for friends to use) and a digi tech multi effect that was fun to play with but not practical so I never used it when I was jamming. Next pedal I buy will be a looper. And like others have said if your amp doesn't have reverb get a reverb pedal.

Tuner, overdrive and delay are my 3 must have pedals. Wah, comp and reverb are probably next in line. I have modulation pedals (chorus/flanger/phaser) on my board but use them rarely and wouldn't miss them for a second if there were gone.

What pedals you need to get as a beginner? - Drive pedal. Depending on your style it's a low gain (klon style, bluesbreaker-style,...), an overdrive (tubescreamer, blues driver,...) or a distortion (plexi-style, ocd-style, rat-style,...). Some may even want a fuzz, though that's probably a minority. - Looper, ideally with drum machine. This is a perfect practice tool for the beginner. - Delay. Great for soundscapes, slapback delays, soaring solos. - Some sort of modulation - many people will go for a chorus/vibrato, but phaser and tremelo are popular too. - 5th pedal will depend on what you want to achieve. Lend some space to your sound with a reverb? Get an extra overdrive/distortion to stack or as an alternate flavour? A compressor for percussive playing? A wah for more expressive playing? A pedal amp for ampless playing? I'm not including tuner here. It's arguably the most important pedal you could have (no-one sounds good if they're out of tune), but it's also a pedal that doesn't contribute anything to your tone or song-playing.

After learning a month and trying tons of pedals and speaking with experienced teachers and players: 1. Looper pedal- to overlay chorus and lines when playing solos like the TC Ditto X4 Looper 2. Delay pedal 3. Flanger like EHX Mistress 4. Line 6 M13 multi FX pedal 5. Wah pedal Marty this is spot on for pedal recommendations. If you have a good amp there really is no need for distortion or overdrive pedals these are a complete waste of money!

My opinion revolves around what is usable for the new player. As a young musician, you should have the most flexible gear as you are still discovering your sonic identity. I would start with a solid multi effect (Nova system, m9/13, etc) to work with your tone, follow with a drive pedal (joy ultimate drive, bd-2, full drive misfit, etc), add a looper to practice with, a reverb pedal, skip an external delay (your multi effect should have tap tempo and a solid delay), and throw the wah to the trash - it's a one trick pony that a newbie doesn't need. Get a solid tuner pedal instead if the multi effect doesn't have a good one.

Share my little experience on starter gear here in Hong Kong. Recently I've bought a used Squire strat at USD117 and Blackstar tube amp with reverb HT1R combo at USD78. A new Joyo Vintage Overdrive pedal (Tubescreamer clone) at USD30. Plus, USD16 for 2 x 10feet cable. For tuner, I use free tuner app in mobile phone. Every things work swimmingly. Nice and easy and they are versatile enough for playing tons of classic stuffs in any genre.

I would start with a decent midpriced multi-effect pedal, and they're great for exploring and experiencing what different effects do. Do the effects sound as good as individual effects? No, but they might sound good enough for now, and they're extremely convenient. I think most of them also have loopers build in. I have the Zoom G3X, and I've found that I like it well enough for my time-based effects, delays and reverbs, but I'm not as enamored of the overdrive and distortion on it. So I supplement it with standalone overdrive and distortion pedals. Another way to go is cheaper clones of name pedals, such as Rogue, Behringer, Joya, etc. They usually sound very similar to the originals, for a lot less.

I am a beginner guitarist and highly recommend a boss me 25 (includes a good range of effects and a wah pedal that is also volume and sustain) a boss rc3 looper and a digitech trio band creator, they all interact perfectly to enable me to have fun whilst learning to play guitar. Not a massive budget for what you get as a package and sounds great all going straight into a pre owned laney LC15r tube amp (i mainly run with the reverb off and the gain just enough) i got from a local store.

Marty, we have a stack of your DVDs, and they're great! I have been looking into pedals now for a while, but havent figured out where to start... At this point, I'm thinking one.of 2 ways...1)get a good tuner, a couple drives, a reverb and delay, and them probably something like the M5 to fill in the gaps... and then figure out how to power it all...lol. OR ... 2) get a multi effects that would include a tuner, drives as well as amp sims, reverbs, delays, chorus, and more... as well as probably a looper of some sort... this would have 1 power supply and only a couple (or 4) cables... I'm leaning towards something like one of the Headrush products, like the gigboard, possibly a Helix HX stomp, or even the $300 Mooer GE200.... Any input would be appreciated!

Great list, but I think number two is really depending on what kind of music you like to play. I personally don't like to play the styles using wah (big fan of the music, just not something I wanna play) so I would go either with distortion or fuzz pedal instead of wah.
@GogiRegion
7 жыл бұрын
People would be more likely to keep a fuzz pedal, so I would probably recommend that to a beginner over a distortion pedal, if they can only get one at first. Just me, but I think getting a fuzz is better, because it sounds good, and unlike distortion, has no chance of being outclassed by an amp in the future, since they are so different. This is especially true if they buy an overdrive pedal, as that will also be able to outclass a distortion in the future, but still be useful with a high end tube amp.

If you're just starting out, it's not a bad idea to get more affordable pedals (behringer, donner, joyo, etc). If you only want to get good quality pedals, make sure to buy used. It's cheaper and plus you can usually sell for what you got it for or maybe even more and invest that money into another pedal you might like. Be careful though, this will be a viscous cycle that will continue for years to come lol. Make sure the first pedal you buy is a TUNER or at least have some kind of tuner option via phone, headstock tuner, etc.

I agree with Marty except as to #5. In that spot I would put a chorus or any other modulation pedal such as a phaser or flanger, so long ax said modulation pedal is versatile and enables you to acheive a chorus-like effect in addition to whatever else it does. My advice to a novice would be to consider getting a multieffects unit first, instead of all of the 5 specific effects listed, if said beginner wants to get her feet wet and explore different types of effects to see what she likes and would like to make a part of her tone. I don't see the point of getting overdrive, delay, wah, looper AND a multieffects unit - the MU will have most if not all of the first 4 and would be duplicative.
