Top 5 largest stock exchanges in Africa - Finance in Africa
Hello Investors, in this video, we are going to cover a list of Top 5 largest stock exchanges by market capitalization in Africa. We will skip any further introduction into stock exchanges for now, but if anyone asks for it, we shall cover it in a later video.
At the time of the making of this video, which is November 2022, there are 29 stock exchanges in Africa, serving 38 countries and with over 1,100 listed companies. According to African exchanges. Org, only 25 of those are members of the ASEA (the African Securities Exchange Association).
JSE, Johannesburg Securities Exchange
Formerly known as Johannesburg Stock Exchange, JSE, and with a 1.36 Trillion Dollars market cap, is the leading stock exchange in Africa. Currently located in One Exchange Square in Sandton, JSE limited is South Africa’s financial center. We were not able to verify the claim by zoominfo,com that JSE has 528 employees, but what we do know is, there are 425 listed companies on the exchange. According to statista.com, JSE is also ranked among the largest stock exchanges in Europe, Middle East and Africa.
NGX, Nigerian Stock Exchange
NGX Group Plc (Public Limited Company),which is in the race to make Africa’s largest economy, is the second largest stock exchange in the continent. It has a 66.7 billion dollars Market Cap and is known for its integrated market infrastructure which has enabled a wide range of trading activities. It is regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Nigeria and is currently located in Stock Exchange House, in Lagos, Nigeria. There are 129 employees at the exchange according to signal hire, and 156 publicly traded companies on the exchange.
CSE, Casablanca Stock Exchange
Morocco’s CSE comes in third position in Africa’s leading stock exchanges, it is also ranked among the best performers in the MENA region (Middle East and North Africa). Casablanca Stock Exchange’s Market Cap is approximately 65.3 billion dollars. It is regulated by Moroccan Capital Markets Authority, has 60 employees according to investoport.com, and is currently located in Angle Avenue des Forces Armées Royales et Rue Arrachid Mohamed in Casablanca, Morocco. There are 76 listed companies on the exchange.
EGX, Egyptian Stock Exchange
The Egyptian Market, EGX, has two stock exchanges, one in Cairo and one in Alexandria. EGX is regulated by the Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA) and has a market cap of 44.2 billion dollars. Both stock exchanges use the same infrastructure to carry out their activities as they are governed by the same board of directors. The Cairo and Alexandria stock exchange office is located in the core of the Smart Village Area, in Cairo.There isn’t an exact figure to how many employees are there at EGX, but linkedin estimates 201-500 rough figure, what we do know though is, there are 215 listed companies on the exchange.
NSE, Nairobi Stock Exchange
Kenya comes fifth, with a market cap of 17.2 Billion dollars. Formerly known as Nairobi Stock Exchange, NSE PLC is regulated by the Capital Markets Authority of Kenya and is located in The Exchange, on 55 Westlands Road, in Westlands, Nairobi. There are 65 companies listed on Nairobi Stocks Exchange. Zoominfo.com quotes 98 employees at the exchange, we were not able to verify this during the making of the video.
