Every Friday night almost from 2013-2015 I can attest first hand this guy is a part of a family of drummers, Kobes, D.Mac, PJ, Harrison, all were role models, with their own style. I pray everyday for my people still down unda, and hope to make it back to conference soon!

Think he was referring 180 degrees as in level, flat to the floor, not with reference to the stick which was 90

Thanks for this video, but I have a question: When you discussed basic 2 and 4 grooves early in the video, you mentioned that the rimshot is critical. Are you saying that you always play rimshots on 2 and 4 during grooves? If so, why? I did that playing hard rock and metal in the 80’s/90’s for intensity (which really wasn’t necessary but I liked the sound of it) but why a rimshot verses a solid stroke with the tip only? A rimshot seems overpowering in this context. Did I misunderstand you?
@Worshiponline

Hey Terry! He's saying that in his experience, doing a rimshot on 2 & 4 allows for more power and consistency!

Are you using triggers and samples? The drum sounds too good to be just mic'd drums.

I’ve been drumming in church for the last 25 years, and over last 10 years or so I’ve noticed an unfortunate trend in contemporary worship drumming….the drum grooves being played ARE NOT serving the song! The rhythmic choices and phrasing should REINFORCE what is happening rhythmically in the other rhythm section instruments as well as with the vocals. Sooooo many times the drummer is off on his own out in left field playing something that doesn’t mesh with what the rest of the band and/or vocalists are doing. It takes away from the purpose of what we are there for. News flash, most of the time a simple 2 & 4 backbeat groove is the MOST appropriate thing to play and NOT some crazy Tom Tom groove that you THINK is cool but only serves your own ego and not the song. And I’m implicating all of the mega churches/artists that are responsible for this trend.
