I liked Shinada more than Tanimura and Saejima. His character is really down to earth. Simple kind hearted guy that tries to live an ordinary good life. His grabs are cool, he has some brilliant Heat actions, he’s funny and somehow he’s dressed like Shenmue protagonist ( might be a homage, it’s Sega). And his voice actor is top notch. This guy voices Dante in DMC and you can barely tell if it’s him or not. Also Minato in Naruto and other anime, movies and games.

As much as I love my man Kiryu, Majima was just a little better overall. Kiryu was intense, loving, and a complete bad-ass BUT he just felt too righteous throughout the series. His moral compass was always close to perfect. Majima was basically one-dimensional in the first Yakuza game but became a better and more layered character from Y2 onwards. He was honorable but also shady. He was sadistic but also caring. He was just more nuanced. Yakuza 0, to me, cemented him as not only the best playable protagonist but also the best character in the franchise which is why I hope we get to full play as him again in future installments

#1 KAZZY KIRYU I love Majima's quest and substories and character interactions in Y0. But Kiryu's manly voice, his value for honor and loyalty, his fierce demeanor, and his self restraint is just mint as fuck. He's a total badass, appearance and self value wise... He's even more badass when he loses his self restraint when his love ones are hurt or killed. I just wish I can unlimitedly rip the enemies and bosses face off during that.
@thenorthstarsamurai

Kiryu is the heavy personification of what a Yakuza should be that's why he's pretty much perfect in the Yakuza world a kind yet ruthless fighter who fights for what he thinks is right, also if you could rip people's faces off in these games then that'll be just asking for the end of the whole franchise as killing is no joke in Japan even in fiction

About Akiyama any his fighting style, I'm *almost entirely* sure Arai taught him it. They mention it a couple or so times in 4, and you can see just how utterly similar the two fight in their face off at the end of the game. Any other explanation doesn't really make any sense. Him just "knowing it magically" is of course a silly, meme-worthy joke at best. (Also, congrats on the 7.5k subs my dude. This channel has come quite far.)
@Skirish
6 жыл бұрын
I agree with ya man, it makes the most sense, Akiyama idolised Arai when he went out of his way to defend him, and since Arai is quick on his feet it's probably when Akiyama was like "Huh, maybe I'll be as badass as him one day..." then Akiyama went on to be one of the best fighters period
@Roderickthegray

I’m with you there, I keep forgetting when it was said but I know for a fact Arai was a role model for him in many ways.

Well Akiyama thought Arai'd surpass even Kiryu in his speech to Kido, during that is when he brings up being saved by Arai and even the finale when he talks about his own ability to judge people to Arai, it comes off as Akiyama wanting to follow in Arai's footsteps so it's my understanding that the lesson Arai taught to Akiyama the night he was mugged was that of strength and compassion, it's why I believe Akiyama went on to develop his own leg based fighting style for pure, unselfish reasons, which kinda makes sense in how he gets to the stage he's in by Yakuza 5 (Damn, I ramble man)

FUCK YEAH MAN! My top 5 by the way: Kiryu Kiryu Kiryu Kiryu Serious Majima To me Yakuza is Kiryu’s series and he’s the best character they could create and he’ll remain that way. Kind, strong, might be both soft and strict, understanding, VERY KIND, always helping other people and he’s not selfish. The reason I play this series and I’ll stop doing so when they get rid of him completely. He’s gameplay is also the best. The reason I picked Serious Majima is simple. He’s badass. He’s gameplay is as great as Kiryu’s ( especially Street Fighter style ), his ponytail and appearance overall was one of the best. He’s honest and he values honesty the most. He’s even ready to sacrifice his life for people close for him. Crazy Majima was cool too, but not as cool as Zero Majima IMO. And, I feel like Arai taught him the basics while experience taught the rest. Doid is the Lifeline of Kamurucho. Also, my biggest issue with 6... Nice list leon, as for my list gameplay wise only:1. Saejima Taiga- dude is a freaking tank and I like those type of characters, yes he is slow compared to other characters, but boy does he pack a punch, he hits enemies really hard and has some defensive techniques as well like a knockback when you block the opponent, and an added dragon drop in in Yakuza 5, and I like his heat moves as well especially the one they added in 5 where he grabs a punk by the head and swings him like a rag doll knocking out other enemies, you can't knock this dude down when he is in heat mode and you can charge his attacks to deal even more damage.Both Saejima and Kiryu can grab an enemy by his foot wich is pretty neat 2. Kiryu Kazuma- well he is the most balanced character, he has a speed he has a power and a great defensive techniques. He has the most heat moves out of every character, and for lots of situations, you can choose to end his strings into a throw or a blow. He has the infamous tiger drob, a sok klab like punch parry after which you could do that dragon kick, and knockback while blocking, and a gut punch when he is knocked out. His cigarette heat action is boss like and I wish that they will bring it back.3. Tanimura Masayoshi- I know some people don't like this character and glad that he is gone, but I do and I wish that he would come back. He has the most weak hit strings out of any character( 5 to be exact) they all end into a hit actions after a heavy blow, his secondary armlock grab is awesome allowing to either snap an enemies arm, kick him in the face with a fancy hook kick, and a drag around throw.His parry is great allowing to parry enemies with pipes katanas etc from all sides. Essence of arresting is a fancy heat action that would be missed.4.Shinada Tatsuo- the guy has as many weak hit strings as Saejima(3 to be exact and you can grab an opponent in between them) and although he can't charge heavy blows like Saejima, he can end his strings either into throw or a tackle. Tackle is great and all has a heat action, you can throw the enemies down, or away from you, and knock em down when they are slamed against a wall, but sadly enemies can break out of it quite often, cool thing about his throw is that you can slam the enemies down and bring them back up all in one motion, has a grab parry and can grab an opponent out of sidestep. He has a cool heat action when he pulls his enemy up, throws him into a wall, then shoulder rams him into that wall, and repeatedly slams his head against it, the later part was given to Majima in yakuza 0.5. Akiyama Shun- he is probably the most likeable character after Kiryu and Majima, the fastest one and can do a double sidestep in between his weak strings, you can either end those attacks into a heavy blow or a juggle starter that can go into unending juggle until your heat gauge is completely depleted.The trolliest out of all other characters with the amount of taunts that he has either while the opponent is knocked out, or akiyama is knocked out, when you grab an enemy and a regular standing taunt. Just as Kiryu as Saejima, Akiyama has his own version of a Tiger drop.He ha a unique weak hit string attacks animations while grabbing his enemies when he repeatedly kicks their opponents into kidneys or hips or whatever. Just like Kiryu has a sidestep heavy blow attack and some pretty cool heat actions, like throwing an enemy against a guard rail and then grinds their head against it, the heat action was given to Majima. Overall he is a cool character, got inspired by Arai and developed his own version of fighting style, although I wish that he had punches in between his strings, just like Arai, that's my only gripe with his style, as only kicking enemies gotten boring after a while and if he had more moves like Kiryu Shinada Saejima or Tanimura he would have been higher on my list.Haruka has her own gameplay so I can't really compare her to the other characters, and I can't rate Ryuji or Majima, since I didn't bought Dead Souls and I don't have a PS 4, playing a Japanese version of Yakuza 0 on PS 3 would be really frustrating for me.

Pretty Great list, Salman. Glad you included Tanimura here. He's pretty underrated. I'm alittle disappointed that you didn't pick Haruka for #1 though, Her fighting style wreaks EVERYTHING! Though to somewhat answer your question about Akiyama's fighting style, I remember reading somewhere (maybe, I could be completely wrong) that Arai actually taught Akiyama how to fight. It makes sense because Arai uses various kick attacks in his boss fight and Arai is Akiyama's idol, so This isn't entirely implausible. Good luck on your project.

My theory on Akiyama is that he copied his fighting style from Arai when he saved him but because he had natural talent, as stated by Saigo and Komaki, he was able to put it into effect. His fighting style description in 4 also say that he combines his kicks with his "innate speed," I guess implying his talent in that area. In some substories in 4 (cant remember exactly which ones) when asked about how he got so strong, he was always like, "well in my line of business, you have to be," or something like that. From all that I believe he had the talent of a fighter all along, he found a fighting style to develope, and had to put it to use when he became a loanshark, a loanshark in Kamurocho at that, you'd have to get good at fighting to be one and still hang around the yakuza like Arai and Kido, who are Tojo Clan.

Saejima is one of my favourite characters in these games. He's an absolute beast when it comes to battle. And despite his scary looks, he's a big softie on the inside. Also I love his voice acting. But my all-time favourite protagonist out of any video game would be Kiryu.

For me it’s Majima, Akiyama, Yagami, Ichiban, Kiryu. Also my list of top 5 favourite characters, which is a rarity for me, as I often prefer the villains and find them more interesting. Talking purely Yakuza, move Shinada in there. Think this series did a great job making their main characters likeable.

12:12 That pillow must have been stuffed full of batteries or stones. xD But yeah, Akiyama and Tanimura are probably my fav protagonists who aren't Kiryu: Akiyama's fighting style's an absolute joy to use when you're going full tilt with rapid kicks and fancy heat actions, while Tanimura's got a pretty cool fighting style too, even if he's a bit slower compared to some of the others. He's got some great heat actions too: nothing like finishing off a goon by slapping the cuffs on him.

Rest in pepperoni Shinada, Haruka, and Dead Souls Ryuji, they’re not Top 5 protagonist material. On a serious note though, congratulations on your sub milestone! Over this summer I got to watch a stream of Yakuza 0 and fell in love with the franchise. Naturally, I found this channel while searching for content for the series, particularly trying to find gameplay for other titles since I grew fascinated by those too, and it’s been awesome seeing this channel grow and develop alongside the series! Keep up with your work and I can’t wait for Kiwami 2 stream!! PS, my list is pretty much synonymous with yours with the exception of ranking Saejima higher for story reasons. Idk I find something both profound and likable in such a rugged, cynical ex-yakuza being extremely trusting, even to a fault. It seems ridiculous at times (like him trusting the backstabber from 3 Like Dude), But ultimately his theme of letting go of the past to seek/pave a better future is one I think rings true to the series’ message. His dialogue in Purgatory’s underground cage battle particularly moved me beyond words. In a series based around violence and a character revolving around assassination, Saejima‘s plea to stop romanticizing murder is beautiful. It’s likely a struggle none of will deal with, but it’s clear to tell how the trauma affected him, and Majima too. Okay I didn’t expect to rant about Saejima but I digress, this list was well made and full of passion. It’s clear to see your love for the series embedded in this video.

I enjoyed Yakuza 6. The combat felt like a step back in several aspects but the way the city stuff was handled made up for it, I felt. And the story was well worth it. The sum of its parts was quite the high number, in my mind. Haruka having dance battles in 5 rather than fighting does seem a bit duff, but if you think about it, there isn't really a good way to have her be a combat-oriented character. Not only is she very much not built for it (she's about as cutesy feminine as it gets), but the whole idea of rando thugs assaulting you in the street would go from silly to blatantly ill-willed with Haruka in the protag's chair, and that takes a lot of the wind out of the fun-feeling sails, if you get my meaning. You'd need a different kind of female character from Haruka to pull that off; a character closer to the woman who teaches Kiryu the Beast style in Zero, a character who would allow the writing to play random encounters as less of a serious problem and more of the kind of thing it is for Kiryu, Akiyama, and so on. As for Akiyama learning to fight the way he did? The dude's got oodles of money. He can afford martial arts lessons. Oh God, he can afford martial arts lessons. And when you keep as much cash in your home as he does, you damn well better be able to defend it. - Lewis
