LOL I got that too, probably because our parents were just tired of answering our million questions. But, I do actually agree that American children are encouraged to ask "why". I think some of the points on this list were probably written with other cultures in mind, as a sort of contrast. In some other cultures, it's sort of a one way street, but in America, I would say explanations, teaching, discussion, independent thought, inquiry is encouraged a lot more than in other places. I think it's getting at that. That was sort of my take anyway.

@@kijete Hateful, rude, or offensive speech is protected by the 1st Amendment of the United States Constitution, as is *most* speech. In other words: Hate speech = protected speech Because it is an opinion and opinions are highly protected in the US. In fact, even if your opinion harms someone's reputation or business, they have no grounds to sue. Even if they become homeless and starve to death because no one wants to be near them. Why? Because what you expressed was an *OPINION* not a false statement of fact, which in that case would be called slander or libel depending. Americans value freedom of speech greatly. And if a case about an opinion harming a reputation went to court, and the person who voiced their opinion was ordered to pay, news outlets would be on it in an instant and it would probably go to the Supreme Court where the outcome would be overruled in half a second flat. This is also what would happen if someone were sued or arrested for making an offensive comment about a person's race, sex, gender, looks, ethnicity, origin, accent, personality, sexual orientation, religion, and on and on and on. And lawyers would be crawling to represent them in court because you can bet they'd be entitled to quite the pretty penny in damage money. Americans take this very seriously and very, very few things are not protected under the 1st Amendment.

If its one of the only things americans can brag about, its time to look at how poorly the country is at a larger scale and how much could be improved, but it doesnt because Americans are shit scared of positive change. And it shouldnt be an eccuse for hate speach either. Also. It has nothing to do with culture. Barely anything on this list has anything to do with culture. The only ppl in america that has an american only culture is natives. Obesity and dirty streets isnt culture. Food. Unique clothes for unique seremonies. Folklore. Unique celebrations. Overall how you treat each other. Architecture. That is culture. Feeling love for your country is a good thing. But with america its usually taken to the extreme. America didn't get its independent spirit from the post-1965 immigration change or the last couple decades of increased ethnic diversity. So I disagree with you that mass immigration or ethnic/foreign culture diversity is what gives Americans their independent/freedom spirit. Also, a lot of (especially Western) countries have a lot of newcomers from the East/ethnic diversity these days, so that is not an American thing. And to say Americans like diversity (assuming you mean foreigners coming to America practicing their foreign cultures) is such a general statement. In fact, a lot of Americans like American culture and American towns and communities. And I don't think a majority of Americans have wanted an increase in immigration levels perhaps since the question was asked, not for decades at least, and probably not ever.

I'm an American living in Northern Virginia which around 30-50 minutes from DC depending on the traffic. It varies from state to state especially if you go to more rural areas or the bigger metropolitan cities. The west coast is extremely different from the east coast and same with the midwestern states. I'm assuming this video is just general guidelines. From my experience living in Northern VA my entire these are my thoughts and criticism. #13 is partially true. In majority of the country, minus some of the more rural areas it is rude and not socially acceptable to make of fun someone's religion or ethnicity, but on a federal level it is not a hate crime until someone threatens violence or uses violence (arson, murder, or vandalism) for someone to receive a fine or a jail sentence. Generally speaking, majority of Americans are extremely tolerant to different religions and if you stay around the cities and even some more rural areas you will be fine. #14 is mostly true. Alcohol laws vary state by state, but America compared to other western countries is very strict with the sale of alcohol. In my state of Virginia, it is actually legal for a minor to drink alcohol only if they are accompanied by a parent or guardian who is over 21 years of age. However, someone who is under 21 can not purchase alcohol anywhere in the country. #15 this was changed July of 2019. You have to 21 anywhere in the country now to purchase tobacco and nicotine products. As for smoking in certain places this isn't really true. You can't smoke in restaurants or indoors, but when you're outside as long as you stay a distance from non-smokers it's honestly not a big deal when it comes to public smoking. #25 This really depends on the person, I guess. I actually never heard of this. #26 This feels wrong to me. There usually some form of music going on in the background. Again, depends on the party or the people hosting it. #31 I don't how everyone else does it, but the thank you cards are not common anymore since communication on the internet is mainstream now. It was more preeminent before everyone was on the internet. Usually, you can just send the gift with a little message or not include one at all. #32 Some people do, but Americans typically bottle up emotions more lol. #33 The closest color i would think would symbolize death is black. It is acceptable to wear all black at a funeral, but this isn't a rule. I didn't have formal clothes at the time so I kinda wore a funny shirt, but that cheered up people. #36 You typically dont ask a women her age or her weight. For the most part, asking someone how much they make isn't socially acceptable unless you are really close to them. I don't see how asking someone about their religion isn't socially acceptable, being curious about someone's religion can be a sign of interest in someone's beliefs which is typically seen as positive. Maybe not to a stranger, it depends. #48 I think with hook up culture this has changed a lot, but always be on the cautionary side when doing so.

I don’t know how this only had 3 likes. I’m from Maryland. Baltimore City specifically and yeah, what you said is pretty close to what it’s like up here. Most people don’t know that you can still drink under 21 but under certain circumstances. What I read was to just always assume that if you are under 21, the clerk cannot sell alcohol to you specifically. I never realized how reserved Americans are emotionally, especially at funerals. If you are interested in delving more into American culture, I strongly recommend reading Pat Buchanan's book The Death of the West. An audiobook is on KZitem. He talks about the new post 1960s sub-culture that has turned into the dominate culture in TV and movies, and the real American traditional culture. I found it an interesting and informative read (or listen)

I was born on a farm in the Midwest and have lived in three major cities across the US. I also travel almost every week and I consider myself to be decently in touch with American culture. I watched this and thought most of this was laughable. I gave my opinion on some of the ones that were just downright false, misleading, and funny: #7 & #8: Homelessness is a problem, but most Americans ignore them. We also have shelters most go to at night #9: Big city streets are more often clean than not #10: Most of us do NOT have tattoos and piercings (except women’s ears) #12: No one gets thrown in jail for littering or loitering, LOL #13: This might be the biggest line of BS in here. No one can be punished for making an insulting statement about someone else’s religion or ethnicity. You might catch the ire of the media and your employer might fire you for being an idiot, but the government cannot throw you in jail for simply being a bigot that says things. #14: Most, especially college students, drink before 21. #15: More people smoke weed than smoke cigarettes today #23: Total BS. I’ve never seen an American eat with one hand with the other under the table in their lap. In fact, if you’re at a more formal dinner like a banquet or gala, it’s common to eat with both hands: your fork in the left and your knife in the right. #24: Turn off the TV when guests come over? LOL. I’d say this depends on WHY your guests are coming over. Most of us watch the Super Bowl on TV and even have a phrase called “Netflix & chill.” #26: Typically no music at an American party? Every wedding, major events and a lot of birthdays I go to have a DJ / Band and usually a lot of dancing. Hell, most people turn on music even if they have people over for the hell of it. LOL. #30: Most Americans do NOT open presents / cards in front of people, especially at weddings, and usually only open presents / cards with close family around. The exception to this is probably a baby shower or a younger kid’s birthday. #31: Most gifts do not come with a card. In fact, it is commonplace to just give a card with money / a gift card included, especially at a birthday or wedding. #33 / #34 / #35: The ones on funeral are pretty much all WRONG. To state there is “no traditional color” for a funeral is a lie. You are to never wear white to a funeral (or a wedding for that matter). Most wear darker suits / dresses and black is often associated with mourning. You can send flowers with the color of choice, but this is growing more uncommon. In fact, it’s more common than not to make a donation to a charity in memory of the person in lieu of sending flowers. This is usually noted in the obituary. Most receptions / meals after the funeral are NOT held at the home of the family. These are usually held at a local community gathering space, like a church. #41: This depends entirely on what the “party” is for. If it’s a house party, it’s entirely acceptable to bring friends and family. If it’s a formal invite, such as a wedding, then the invitation will usually denote “Recipient + Guest”. #43: I would say this depends entirely on the situation and who the person is. You might hug someone at church, but you would certainly never see this in the business world. It is almost universal to shake hands with someone we don’t know or are not close to vs hug them. LOL. #44: Hmm, this is a tough one. I agree that it’s normal for a female to have male friends (and vice versa), but it all depends on the situation. It can definitely be viewed suspiciously, especially by a spouse. #45: It IS uncommon for a man to have a female roommate, unless that man is gay, lol.

Funny enough, #12 loitering is not a crime in Putin's Russia. The Russians have the right to do whatever they want in public places (as long long as it's a lawful activity) under the authoritarian regime. There's no translation of this word into Russian either. Lol

8. Not necessarily a lot of people ignore the holmless. There is no stigma against talking to the homeless. 11. Yes, but so do all other developed nations. 13. Thats not exactly what a hate crime is (but do please refrain from being racist anyway) 19. or relaxed, or bored. it's sometimes just how people rest their arms 23. that's outdated etiquette. 26. most "typical American parties" consist of loud music, drinking, and dancing. 32. That's not true, it depends heavily on, the ethnicity, culture, and personal values of the family. (just read the room.) 34. nobody will get insulted by a gift or money. 47. That depends on the woman. 49.-50. these are great values but not as commonly taught as the video would have you believe.

13 is not true. You can make an insulting statement about someone's religion or ethnicity. It is called freedom of speech. It is a basic right of All Americans to speak freely. Threatening someone with violence or inciting violence can sometimes be against the law though. Otherwise you can speak freely on the street as you please.

Dear God! Is this how we describe ourselves!? No wonder people think we're a joke. We're fat, tattooed, have filthy cities, and the concept of freedom of speech has devolved into criminal behavior. Look, I love American culture, but if this is what you see as being an American, count me out.

🤣 Children are encouraged to ask why just so we can get the answer 'because I said so.' Teachers were even less enthusiastic about answering very many questions. A lot of these are very... optimistic. There is a lot of diversity in how American culture is because it is made up of so many different cultures and different parenting styles. This is not a terrible list, but if you are watching to learn about Americans please get to know Americans on a one by one basis. For example, I have only ever sent thank you cards to my grandparents for gifts because they live on the other side of the country. If I say thank you in person, don't expect a card. That's a bit more old fashioned and I'd usually only go out of my way like that for a wedding, baby shower, or funeral. The best thing to do is talk it over with an American friend if you are confused about anything, and then remember that even then there might be some slight variations among people. When in doubt, always ask.

13 is WRONG, freedom of speech is constitutionally protected, we are allowed the freedom to insult whom ever we please. Discrimination, unless in legal matter such as hiring or through job structure, is not necessarily illegal either. We can speak distastefully of whomever we like, which is a form of discrimination. Now, that’s not to say one should, however the Founders knew of the power of the word and what it would mean giving the government the right to choose what one can and cannot say.

13 is absolutely wrong. It is not illegal to say anything at all in the united states of america, regardless of who it hurts. It depends on how it hurts, however. Obviously telling someone to kill another man and them actually following through with it makes you a criminal. Just walking up to a muslim, christian, jew, etc and sharing your offensive opinion is not illegal
@davids1677

This was not just generalizing. This speaker put her own politics. NOT ALL AMERICANS believe in Freedome of Choice - Many Americans believe in Pro Life and that Abortion is murder. - Also Men do not like when women put down men. Do not generalize as though women are better than men. Equality? Heard of it? There are many parties with music and dancing. The speaker might not have many fun friends. LOL NOTICE the slanted view of the speaker. - Most American Men do not like jealous or possesive men also. She only mentions women. Come on. This is not a feminist for equality, this is what we call a famin-nazi. A woman who either hates men, or at least very bitter. How can she ask for respect when she doesn't give it?? 47. Most American women will only say they don't like men to pay. Not true. It is how they do it. If a man pays in a way she knows there is no alterior motive. Basically she is a minority of women who are hypocrites. Hold the door for all women. What you held the door for a woman? 49 what a joke. American parents do not teach children how to be responsible. It is so rare that happens. These social justice warriors (those who are not into fairness and equality, but want women to rule) They usually let the tv or hollywood influence their children's ability to be responsible. 50 Always ask why? Again her background. Not all Americans. Many Americans teach children wisdom. Many times it is good to trust, without asking why. - Sad that this came up near the top search. So biased.

Not all true. Hate speech/crime is a myth. Freedom of speech allows anyone to give their opinion about anyone and/or anything. If the one being spoken to finds it offensive, tough shit. Learn to deal with it. If they "can't" deal with it, they're obviously a grown brat who wasn't raised properly & needs a psychiatrist. Everything that isn't against state, or federal law is allowed, whether others find it offensive or not.
