The Okitama Sakura Kairo (Cherry Blossom Corridor) is a general term for the giant cherry trees and cherry blossom viewing spots scattered throughout the Okitama region in southern Yamagata Prefecture. Each of the cherry blossoms has its own route, and you can take a car to visit them in order. All of the cherry blossoms are stately, and the concentration of such huge cherry trees is rare in Japan.
Isazawa no Kubozakura is a giant cherry tree that is said to be over 1,200 years old and stands out in the Okihama Sakura Kairo. Although the trunk of the tree is quite damaged, the cherry blossoms bloom beautifully in spring. A wooden path has been set up around the tree so that visitors can enjoy its brave appearance as they walk around it.
The Kaminokoshi-zakura is an 800-year-old Edohigan cherry tree with a height of about 20 meters and a trunk circumference of about 6 meters, and was one of the most popular cherry trees in the Oki-tama Sakura Corridor, but unfortunately it was found dead in recent years. The Katsuya cherry tree is a child of the Kama-no-koshi cherry tree, and the parent and child cherry trees stand side by side.
The Yakushi-zakura is a single cherry tree standing near the Kamanokoshi-zakura, about 15 meters tall with a trunk circumference of about 8 meters. It is an old Edhigan tree, about 1,200 years old, and its thick trunk gives it a sense of dignity.
The Jyuuni no Sakura (Twelve Cherry Trees) is also one of the giant cherry trees in the Okihama Sakura Corridor, and the name of the cherry tree comes from the name of the place, "Jyuuni Yakushido. The variety is Edohigan, and the tree is about 16 meters tall with a trunk circumference of about 6 meters.
The Yamaguchi Scholarship Cherry Blossom is a giant Someiyoshino tree, about 100 years old, standing on the site of an old elementary school and about 15 meters high.
The cherry tree in Komorido is a 1020-year-old edohigan (Edohigan) with a height of about 15 meters and a trunk circumference of about 7 meters.
The Yakushi-zakura in Akasaka is a 1,000-year-old edohigan tree with a height of about 9 meters and a trunk circumference of about 6.1 meters.
Sosho Park is a city park located in the hills near Nanyo City, and is famous for its roses. It is also home to several giant weeping cherry trees, including the Choyo cherry tree, and is included in the Okihama Sakura Corridor.
