Jeff, this is AWESOME. My wife and I are 12 years into development of a 200ac property in northern WI. Plots, cover, seasonal movements e.t.c. We're following your program very closely. This year we started your mock scrape recommendations and by golly it's working! Have seen deer, bucks and does- on em already in only a couple weeks! Truly amazing how well this works considering we've got thick cover everywhere... but they're finding em with no trouble. Right down to proper size, height and attachment, we're implementing this carefully and strategically. Thrilling to say the least how fast they've found em. Keep providing! We're listening, paying attention and seeing results. Thank you sooooo much!

Great channel Jeff. I made two mock scrapes on my 50 acre property in upstate NY. I followed your info on what to do to a T. The first evening after making them I had deer using them all night. And I would just like to point out if you do it properly you do not need to do anything to get the deer started. They naturally will start using them. The activity at these mock scrapes is incredible. I’m really enjoying your channel and look forward to what you show next.

Awesome information and videos! I put out my first mock scrape and vertical licking branch this past season (6 months ago) and got tons of pictures of deer hitting the licking branch and had was able to see a good amount hit it while sitting. Just went back up to turkey hunt with my father and scout a little and there was nothing but mud under the licking branch because so many deer were still going to it (all around the area is standing grass). It was so effective and worked so well my dad asked me to put one up on the trail where his stand sits and now he is also watching your videos too.

I saw another of your videos in which you talked about licking branches and mock scrapes. Have never used them so decided to try one out by one of my stands. This area has seen many natural scrapes over the years so figured this would be a good spot. Hung a vertical branch about an inch in diameter. Long story short, checked my camera pics and there is the biggest buck I've ever seen on this section of public land, using that branch, in NJ no less. And I've only had it up about five days. Amazing how quickly they found it. Very exciting and can't wait for the start of the coming season. Thanks for the info.

First time poster, had to jump in. The hanging vine at a mock scrape is gold. It's amazing how well it works. I've hung 3 vines using 18 gauge steel wire. To be expected, the result is a more rigid licking/scent "branch". I'm going to try the free floating vine and am eager to find out if deer seem to have a preference. Like you've said, Jeff, it's a great way to get an inventory on bucks in the neighborhood!

I have always made them pretty rigid so that a deer can poke the preorbital into the end, but I can see that just the weight of the vine is enough. I took your advice and 2 weeks ago put out a mock scrape with vertical licking branch. It’s on a main trail on edge of cedar swamp in northern Michigan. Got a camera to watch it. I cut a sapling with a last years rub on it to have that rub area be at the low end of the branch - thought there might still be some scent on it. Going to let it soak all year - so excited to check out the camera in December.

As a full-time guide in Kansas and someone who has been making mock scrapes since the 80s there is one " commercial " scent I use on my licking branches to get them started that is magic in the woods and a total game changer. It's SMOKEYS Pre Orbital Gland Lure out of West Virginia. Try it. The bucks cannot help themselves but to come back again and again.

Agree once your licking branch is going no reason to add any more scent. The deer take care of the rest. When starting a new spot though nothing wrong with a little Smokeys ( I have no affiliation with them) to get them going. Have found that first week or two the activity is much higher than doing nothing at all. The stuff just flat out works. That's just been my observations. Appreciate your videos and work you put into them.

Hung a vine scrape up behind the house in an area where several trails converge. Your stance on not using commercial scents is a good one, and a money saver as well! Would you consider using an artificial deer urine scent to "kick start" a scrape to help deer recognize and start to use it?

Been watching your videos for a few days now. Tried making a mock scrape for the first time a week ago. So far seems to be an epic fail. Got a Pic of a doe checking it out, then she walked away. We haven't been seeing any bucks on trailcam except for a button buck that still has spots. Not sure what I did wrong, but will try again. Soon the bucks will come off our neighbors swamp onto us. I need to get this right. Even though we have grape vines here in ny, don't think it's what our deer want. The other problem is probably location. There is about 5 main trails coming into the food plot, but they don't meet where I wanted to make it. Think if I want to use a scrape I gotta give up the comfort of our shooting buildings and get more into the thicker cover.

Hi Colin...sounds exciting for you and the family! I like to put them where there is a defined purpose for stand locations...which means just about 1 at every stand location. So really let your stand locations guide you to where to put them. Great stand location = great spot for a mock scrape. Bad stand location...poor spot for a mock scrape. I can shoot most of my mock scrapes with a bow from a treestand. I also do not install a mock scrape without a great spot for a trail camera.

I’ve found that leaving no scent on the branch but putting some buck urine on the scrape itself and some doe in heat urine on the ground leading up to the scrape works well for bringing in buck during the rut. This works for me on more heavily pressured state game lands for those not hunting on private property.

What about useing scents when you first put one out if it's in a spot where there aren't a game trail at

Think about it this way...if it is in a spot where there isn't natural deer movement, then there should not be a scrape there and stand location.

What trail camera are you using?

This will be my 5th hunting season coming up, using Exodus Trail Cams. I love the Lift II model and the Render Cell Cam! Here is a link to check them out... bit.ly/JSturgis 5 year warranty! 2" viewing screen, true HD video and extremely high quality. I am running up to 20 trail cams at one time and regardless of the B roll I need for videos...I rely on the trail cams heavily for learning buck behavior, in season census, buck home range and for making informed hunting decisions. OUTSTANDING trail cameras, after hundreds of thousands of pics and videos over 4 seasons now I can highly recommend. Can't wait for the 5th season!

Would a red cedar or pine sapling work? In Alabama, plenty of these are used for rubs.

This early in the year, is it common that the deer use the locking branch but no scraping.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751

Yes very much so...they largely only scrape about 4-6 weeks out of the year. I have experienced the scrape is still very important for a visual tho, even tho they rarely use it...

Under my most used vine is a 5-6 foot diameter of bare dirt

That is awesome isn't it!? They rarely scrape under them except for the rut...but they dig enough during that time to last all year

They really work.I hunt on a lot of side hills and I can’t seem to make a mock scrape work there, comment?

I hunt nearly all hills...but most deer trails find the flat spots. Those are also great locations for treestands AND mock scrapes. Most of my mock scrapes are located directly over deer trails... I hope that helps!

I put my mock scrape and hanging licking vine up a few weeks ago. Although I haven't got my trail cams up yet, I can watch the vine with binoculars from my porch. Amazing how many deer I've seen hitting that vine in such a short time.

Have u ever shot a mature buck at a mock scrape you made? If so how many? Do u believe that a mature buck will visit it during daylight as long it is near by heavy cover? A lot of articles are wrote about not wasting your time hunting scrapes or mock scrapes because most of the activity is during night time do you believe this is true? Do u like to have water hole and mock scrape at the same Treestand location?

I've been following WHS for about a year now and I've definitely taken huge strides. Especially with food plots. I failed at food plots multiple times but finally had success last year after following your instructions. I planted 2 plots and harvested a deer off each!! Looking forward to this fall!!

But what about the big woods public land??? U need Scent. This is mainly for private condensed deer herd. Ever try doing this on giant piece in U.P. with no other scent or feed near by

One thing I wish I did that you didn’t teach us in the videos.... have video going or pics of the faces when others see you piss in a scrape and or when you show them pics the next weekend! I started taking pics for proof and pissing in front of other members for proof and I had the biggest bucks on our lease using mock scrapes with zero store bought scent or vines and I pissed in them a few times each and then once they took off it was the best pics on the lease over feeders and plots in November.
