I decided three years ago I wanted to get into the trades, but didn’t know how and didn’t really want to go to trade school. So I landed a full time apartment maintenance job at a large reputable company that expected me to quickly learn hvac basics, plumbing, electrical, etc. did that for two years before moving into a full time hvac service role. I’ll make 100-120k this year selling and servicing residential and light commercial systems. I work about 45-50 hours weekly, usually make it home to cook dinner for my family, and have most weekends off.

I’ve been a welder since 1998. Most welding positions only pay 18-26 hr. You have to get a few years experience and become well rounded as a fabricator to find yourself making $30+. My last job at an oil refinery paid me $45 hr. But I don’t want to be in that line of work anymore. I Landed a sanitary welding position with a beverage processing company in New Orleans for $38 hr. and I work in the air conditioning and stay clean all day. If someone wants to get into the trades…. Just go hang out with some guys already doing it. They’ll give you the best advice and probably even show you how.

Not to mention that u ions train "general carpenters" and nobody is wanting to hire a general carpenter. The unions don't care about their members, they just want your money. They won't find you work, they just don't care. Almost every other trade you work for a company. Carpenters usually work for a General contractor and are constantly looking for the next site to get hired on when the one your on is finished and you get laid off. Everyone and their brother is out their framing houses for 20$ an hour. They want you to be a journeyman, have all your own tools and they will pay you under 30$ an hour 😂.

Just wanted to add to a good video . Low voltage controls which can branch out into several different things . Hvac , Fire alarm , access control and security equipment. You can do very well in any of those with minimal training or cost of equipment. HVAC repair awesome in term of what you can make and the low cost of entry and overall low risk . Always be conscientious of your physical limitations , you want to do something that won’t destroy your body because you need to last . Obviously there are some gigs that pay crazy money for a reason . Keep the risks involved in mind when deciding what you want to get into .

Plumbing earns most as far as I know, but yknow how it goes. HVAC earns 2nd best but it takes more studying before you get a certification. It's also more technical than the other two. Electrician probably most dangerous out of the three, but it's more flexible and takes the least amount of schooling. There's a reason why other traders don't like em sparkies. Plumbing is the most dirtiest and hard job on your body. Digging the underground for the drain pipes and water pipes can be a pain in the ass when you shoveling through clay. Then all the all the fixtures are heavy, the glue and primer make a mess everywhere, and it smells horrible. And that’s just new construction. Service and remodeling for plumbing is even worse. Some of the houses that need service are disgusting and smell horrible. Plumbers are looked down upon as overweight(plumbers crack, beer belly) and made fun of a lot. Not to mention that you have to do drain cleanings on pipes or fixtures that are clogged with shit….and it stinks!!

Linemen work on the distribution side of the electrical grid, for example, between the powerplant, and the home/business that is powered- this is all outside work. Electricians work on everything from the service (breaker panel) all the way to the end of the branch circuits.

To be a lineman you pretty much need to join a union, I have never met a lineman not in a union… I am sure there might be some places where that is not true, but I am not aware… Also, while I am not a lineman, I do have a few arc flash suits in my truck… You might want to research arc flash and make sure you want to work in a environment where you need to do the calcs and worry about that!

All you need to get in is a diploma or GED, and once you get accepted into the union to do the apprenticeship you can go to your local UA union hall and practice for certifications in all these things whenever you want and have down time. As long as there's an open booth you can go practice welding whenever you want. After 5 years you become a journeyman and make 48 bucks an hour in california.
