This is amazing! Thank you so much!!!! I have been doing Mesoamerican research for decades and was part of a group that was very irresponsible in bringing so called classical nahuatl usage into our use today. I left that group almost 6 years ago and have been unlearning and learning with Cuitlahuac and all of the resources you all provide. Thank you! Thank you!

You make a good point that it's difficult to find reputable sources. I've been using your book and these videos by recommendation of the Nahuatl subreddit and taking it on faith. You seem to care about the language and treat it respectfully so I trust you as a teacher. Besides the book and videos, what other resources do you recommend for a beginner student?

Same thing with the jehova's witness website which has texts in Nahuatl. I'll also share by Google Drive which has my whole collection :) drive.google.com/drive/folders/0ByzTtZo237kYdTQ2ZkhvT0pOUjA?resourcekey=0-pI5NkZoVftIISEuiBH1BWg&usp=sharing

I studied Classical Nahuatl in college many years ago, so it's really great to see this series. Went to see your associated book and laughed, since I already had it (and really liked how it was made accessible in a way that, let's be honest, Richard Andrews, for example, is really not.)

Do you know the etymology of my favorite* cuss word, chúntaro? I always assumed it was from Purépecha since there are place names in Michoacán with a similar suffix. *In the 60s in L.A. my father would be driving in East Los and there'd be no end of fools in the middle of the road not knowing how to drive or where to go and my father would yell "ARRE, chúntaro!"

When he said your name in the video I had your book in my lap and immediately commented "that's Yan Garcia reading holy shit!" So, awesome job and I think you captured the lyrical quality of a xochicuicatl beautifully. My dream has been to come to Mexico, learn Spanish and through immersion learn Nahuatl along the way (after my studies of your book of course). If we ever do meet on this pale blue dot I'd love just for five minutes of your time to discuss Nahuatl's evolution, especially since it is rare that a European power would chose a Native language as the lingua franca of their fledgling empire, considering the implication that language can lead to a retainment of cultural practices, something the Jesuits sought to move away from. Piyalli Yan! I've seen all these and heard them from people. What's cool now is that I've seen more and more native speakers online. Some are teaching proper grammar and correcting misconceptions like Ximomachti on Fb and IG. What do you think of memes that say that the Mexican "guey" comes from nahuatl?
@thenahuatlchannel3896
3 жыл бұрын
That's awesome! I think some fake stuff will easily be picked up by native speakers. But there is one limitation as well, when it comes to ancient words, intuition alone won't always be enough even from a native speaker. For example, we both speak English, but that doesn't make us experts in the history of each word in English. So it's not always a perfect solution. Anyway, there's no evidence guey comes from Nahuatl. Here's some reasons why: 1. People in Nahuatl don't call each other "hueyi" or "weyi" 2. No documents report people using Guey in Spanish until it was popularized in the 20th century. 3. There's good evidence it comes from word Buey in Spanish already, so it has very recent ties to this word.
@jacintoguevara2692

Buey is pure Spanish via Latin. Güey is the folksy pronunciation of buey AND directly denotes the insult meaning "cuckold" and by extension, "idiot" or clueless guy.

Unfortunately I can't site my source, BUT 'chichimeca' is NOT a "tribe", culture, race or language. It WAS the PEJORATIVE term (yes, lowly "dog-lineage") used by sedentary ("civilized") Nahuatl speakers in Anahuac (Valley Of México) to describe the primitive rascuaches coming in out of the mountains and deserts to become servants and mercenaries. When the Mexihca-Aztecah became powerful, they ended up adopting 'chichimeca' to honor their rugged, nomadic ancestors. Therefore the term can have two "opposite" definitions*. If MY information is wrong, it's from what I read back in the 70s from the eminent scholars of precolombian history. *third definition of Chichimeca is what folks in Zacatecas call their native ancestors to the point where they think Chichimecas WAS a tribe/ specific culture and language.

Kwaltsin tlamawisolli... Can you expand a little more on the Tlalok part? You said the main indicator that it doesn't come from oktli, is that its plural form is tlalohkeh right.. So if it were to come from oktli, its plural form would sound more like TlalokTIN, correct?
@thenahuatlchannel3896

Yeah except then we have a problem that octin doesnt appear as far as i know, plus tin is usually for animates. Tlalocs plural seems to be tlaloqueh, so we have either a k ending or ok ending. Or possibly a loh ending.

Hey, my teacher taught me when I was a child that the roots for the name of our numen Tlalok comes from: (see above)... another name for Tlalok was Tlalokatekujtli maybe because of the existence of Tlalokan, which is imagined by some as a type of heaven where Tlalokej inhabit and rule. If you see the meaning of both things asociated with Tlalok yo'll get earth and rain, which together can also mean blooming or agriculture.

Nawatl in central america is called commonly, Pipil, or Nawat, but all the elders agree that they migrated there from Mexico's east. Not that it was created there. I'm sorry if you feel someone was disrespected but I'm not sure how you think that. I didn't talk about creation in this video.
