You're able to narrow it down to five, Elle!? I'm amazed. 😂 We have three on both of our favorites--Mistborn, Full Metal Alchemist (though I separate manga into a different list) & Winnowing Flame--completed series, I definitely will have to give Strange the Dreamer a read!

The Legacy Trilogy by Matthew Ward is another magnificent series you should read. It blew me away the first time I read it-and that was while coming off a Stormlight book(Oathbringer). It's got everything I want- fantastic flawed and relatable characters, amazing plot and worldbuilding and wars where lines blur, gods interfere and heroes make questionable choices that seem ok at the time. The thing I like the most about the series is that Ward doesn't spare his heroes the consequences of their decisions. Spoilers: Malachi's pact with the Crowmarket at the end of book 1 ultimately almost causes Tressia's downfall, and Viktor's murder of Haddon and embracement and usage of his shadow leads to dire consequences, betrayal and deaths of many of those close to him. (I did warn about spoilers). It makes my top 5 with ease-alongside Stormlight and Wheel of Time.

110% Agree. Got to be a completed series to be a good top-tier pick, sure, there are exceptional series-in-progress, but that is like saying that a half-completed book is the best book; without the entire plot and climactic ending, it is simply incomplete.

I haven't finished enough (started a bunch!) to be much of a reference. I think Dark Tower by King will always be near the top for me (although it's bloody uneven) because I read Kind, I get the Easter eggs and DT is so meta too. I loved the, controversial, ending, cried my way through the last book like a cow and then, when I picked up The Wind novella, and realized that's it, I'll never follow these characters again, I bawled. And still do. Swear, I'm tearing up as I write this. It's plain ridiculous. I don't even think DT is one of the best of all times, I think some books are just for you in inexplicable ways...

I just started book 3 of Mistborn and I can say, with two books read, that I honestly don't get the hype/love for this series. It's not bad. It's not great. It's so average imho. I don't really care about any of the characters and the magic system annoys me. Or maybe it's the way Sanderson describes it. Anyway, I know it's beloved and I'm glad so many people find joy in reading Mistborn. I'm going to finish the third book as I'm a bit of a completist. Maybe it's the best of the three.
