I feel like the motherships could've been contenders as well, since they have hardly any personal defensive capabilities as well. Also the Somtaaw carrier and Kuun-lan, although the Kuun-lan was technically speaking an ore hauler, not a carrier. But even with the siege cannon it was still a support vessel, and not something else since the siege cannon was nigh-suicidal at close range. Honestly out of the whole Homeworld series I think the only "bad" carriers were the ones in Deserts of Kharak. Even without a supporting fleet a full powered carrier could more than fend for itself, enough so that I was using it like a battleship through the second half of the campaign.

@@grennhald Thing with EvE ships is theyre horribly under gunned compared to most scifi ships for game balance reasons. For example a Titan one of the biggest ship classes (~17km) has 8 primary guns (16 if you account the extra for symmetrical firing angles) no point defenses, no fighter/drone bay. You could argue that its ship maintenance array which can accommodate multiple battleships could be counted like a fighter bay. Maybe if you count their doomsday weapons they might have a chance but things like the Eclipse from star wars do that while still bringing a lot of other guns/fighters. Cruiser or smaller might compare well to other universes.

well yes, you could have one set up for fighters or frigates or other permutations, but you had to choose two, so there was still balance. with the the games heavy reliance on specialised Frigates (Flack, Torpedo, Troop, Ion and so on) I don't think it's necessarily too much to for one ship to do, especially since it wasn't a good idea to try to fight any other capital ships with a carrier. it still fits within the role of a dedicated manufacturing platform. you could loose your mothership/flagship but if you still had a carrier hidden away somewhere you could get the shipyard and rebuild your fleet. An in universe application for this would be instead of building a whole fleet and sending it to attack a planet or star system, you send a carrier with some Fighter squadrons and a few escorts into the system and use the materials there to build up your attack fleet. Decentralising manufacturing, rather than having one or more large shipyards that build every ship in your whole fleet.

Hello, Daniel from Spacedock. I "recently" discovered your team's channel about 10 months ago or so, and I have "liked" (both the original AND social-media sense of the word) every single video that I have seen so far. All EXCEPT this one. And to be precise, NOT even the whole video, just the middle portion of it; the rest is perfectly fine. The Comments section on YT isn't exactly ideal for a discussion, so I'll TRY & make this brief, if at all possible. Now for context, I have been a student of military science & history for most, if not all, of my life. In real-life or otherwise. And by "otherwise", I DON'T just mean live-action Western sci-fi properties like you focus on, but also other major media like militaristic anime, such as Gundam, Macross and many others. With my own dad surviving the Second World War/Pacific War as a kid, I have always had a special place in my heart for the mighty carriers. So when it comes to their sci-fi incarnations, I am BOTH their greatest patron AND their worst critic. In the sense that, as much as I want it to be true, naval carriers--as they look & function now, is almost nonsensical in a real-life deep-space combat environment. Now, the very-specific issue I have with this video, is the part when you were talking about the Bengal-class carrier. You were praising it as almost a classic masterpiece of space carrier design, but then, almost under the same breath, you were calling the Retribution an "obsession" with real-life carriers. But, why?? "Realistic" starfighters/strikecraft, like the Vipers from Galactica & the Valkyries from Macross, can ALWAYS arrest their forward momentum in zero-gravity, almost instantly. That fact alone makes ALL space carriers with landing flightdecks/runways, like the Retribution AND the Bengal-class and countless others, unrealistic at best--and as you said, "pretentious" about gravity at worst. HOWEVER, they look cool as hell, because they look like the real-life carriers that we all know and love. And THAT is the reason (perhaps the ONLY one), why we sci-fi fans accept them anyway. Even you have said in a number of your own videos that the "Rule of Cool" have caused you to give many flawed designs the proverbial "pass". So getting back to my question, why? What makes the Retribution with a flightdeck, a design "lunacy" and the Bengal-class, ALSO with a flighteck, a masterpiece of design realism? Is it because the Bengal's launch bays are located on the port/starboard? So just because of that "relocation" of the launching system, that makes it greatly "more" realistic? Again, why?? I apologize in advance if I sound a bit testy here. As I've said before, I have ALWAYS agreed with your judgement on functional designs (we even have mostly the same taste in aesthetic designs), but I have always had this great Sense of Fairness, especially with underdogs. I'm NOT trying to side with either franchise here, but if you're going to be Fair, good sir, you can't have it both ways. So either they're both realistic (or at least acceptable), or they're both nonsensical. WHERE or how they launch their fighters, does not provide a SIGNIFICANT-enough "realism" score, to justify one design as being realistic and then condemn the other as being completely insane! That's just wrong and unfair, sir. Heck, even your own Rule of Cool can be applied well here. One could argue that, not only does the Retribution look "infinitely" cooler than the Bengal-class (it's like comparing the aesthetics of a janky badly-painted WWI carrier to USS Gerald R. Ford, and thus deserves a LITTLE pass from us), but the design's lack of large OVERHANGING launch pods/bays, greatly reduces & streamlines its profile (like in 5th-generation fighters). Which is not only better for general mobility/maneuverability, but also better for stealth and combat/evasion purposes. Anyway, aside from this specific segment/point, I still enjoyed the rest of the video. Will continue to watch & support the channel; keep up the good work.

The Bengal-class from Wing Commander was a Strike Carrier, it's purpose was to jump in, launch strike craft, jump out and rendezvous with it's strike craft at a pre-determined waypoint by jumping in again later to pick up the strike craft and jump back out. Unfortunately due to the shortage of carriers in Confed in the story (technical limitations in the game engine) the ship was instead used in a Fleet Carrier role. The Vesuvius-class was initially referred to as a Supercarrier and was designed with the help of Kilrathi scientists and technology. According to the narrative in Wing Commander IV, the ship was designed as a next-gen carrier, never any mention of it being meant to take a battleship role. The reason St-Helens and Vesuvius were duking it out was because the St-Helens didn't have much of a fighter wing yet since it hadn't even been finished construction when it was taken out of spacedock, and the Vesuvius' wing had been squandered fighting the player, and neither ship had an Escort at the time due to the situation in the story. Vesuvius, not thinking it would need an escort when traveling to Earth and St-Helens not having time to assemble an escort to intercept Vesuvius.

Aww, no love for any of the [space-borne] Carriers seen in the _Homeworld_ games? Though all Carrier types in those games are both for storage, resupply and launching of strikecraft, they are also the _manufacturing facility_ for those same strikecraft and Frigate-size ships, as well as convenient resource drop-off points. The Carrier(s) in _Homeworld_ were capable of producing both defensive and offensive miniature fleets around them, with the only restriction being resource availability and number of crewmen in stasis available to take over new ships! While the Carrier(s) may not be capable of fighting by themselves against other ships of equal or larger size (each only had a few rapid-fire anti-air railguns but nothing for ship-to-ship), they acted instead as miniaturized Motherships that _could_ produce Frigates to take over those fleet-defense roles instead! The Kushan, Somtaaw and Vagyr carriers were quite unique (imo) in their layouts and location of launch/recovery bays.

My favorite carrier or flagship vessel would be the Dalek Emperor's powerful, massive, personal Command ship/Flagship used during the "Last Great Time War!" The Dalek flagship was the main warship of the Dalek Fleet. Like many of the other ships, it was a flying saucer, but was many times larger than the size of the standard Dalek flying saucer. During the Dalek invasion of Mutter's Spiral, the Imperial Command Ship was the flagship of the Dalek fleet and travelled to Lopra Minor for Project Infinity. (AUDIO: Project Infinity) During the Last Great Time War, the flagship fell through time in the final stages and arrived around the 2000th century. The ship housed the Dalek Emperor, which was wired directly into the ship and slowly repaired it after it was heavily-damaged, and the Emperor's Personal Guards. The flagship held one hundred thousand Daleks. When the Fleet invaded Earth in 200,100, the flagship had missiles to fire at targets and hangars from which Daleks could be launched. The ship, as well as the Fleet and every Dalek, was destroyed when Rose Tyler became the Bad Wolf entity. She proceeded to divide them at the atomic level until nothing remained but dust. (TV: The Parting of the Ways) There were other Dalek flagships in Dalek history before the Time War. Another flagship, by the name of the Exterminator, was the first of its kind and was placed under the command of Dalek X, the Dalek Inquisitor General, during the Second Dalek War. The ship was considered by the Daleks as the ultimate expression of power and contained 510 Daleks. The Doctor in his tenth incarnation helped destroy it on Hurala. The Exterminator's destruction was a stunning loss to the Dalek Empire and it gave Earth what was needed to be able to push the Dalek fleet out of Earth-Space. (PROSE: Prisoner of the Daleks) During the New Dalek Paradigm's invasion of Earth in 2106 using a piece of the Eternity Clock, the Dalek Emperor oversaw the proceedings from a Dalek flagship, one which the Eleventh Doctor claimed he had never seen the likes of before. I read a book not to long ago that had, what I thought, was a really interesting Space-carrrier as the main focus. It was essentially shaped like a Venator-class but much larger and the hanger opened at the prow of the ship instead of those dorsal hanger doors that the Venator has. What was interesting about it plot-wise was that it was a one-off prototype when it was built and at the time of the book, it had just gotten pulled out of the reserve fleet where it had been for the last fifty years and there was a whole bunch of old experimental tech on it that nobody knew anything about because the ones who did had all retired. One of them was these strange strips all around the hanger that nobody knew anything about until the last few chapters when they found out they were magnetic rails that were put in so that at the push of a button they could turn the entire hanger into a massive railgun and essentially shoot their entire fighter compliment out all at the same time without them having to build up velocity for combat on the runway. It was called Avelon or something, but I just thought that was really cool. Stupid, but cool.

A personal favourite for me was the ‘Reliant’ from Star Lancer. Just real rugged looking and clearly an old model barely competing against the coalition carriers. The other was the enemy carrier that the top coalition squadron flew from. Had a real practical look but still looked insanely intimidating

Knights of Sidonia seedship is the best carrier ship design I've seen yet. Taking in actual physics, it has an amazing practical design, as well as the best attack vessel launcher.

huge props to the guy who wrote the flaw for the Quasar Fire Class, but I'm fairly sure the Millennium Falcon had so many flaws it became a major plot point by the second film. Star Wars is pretty good at the "nothing is ever good" thing.

I vote the Republics Venator class due not only the massive amount of fighters it can store but also the landing capabilities and massive army In it make it an incredibly well balanced carrier. It also makes use of the little guns it has and has lots of point defense. All around I love the design of the ship and the attributes it has.

Venator. Maybe not exactly pure carrier, but what a great ship! Decent firepower, but not overwhelming. Decently tough, but not ridiculous. Great carrying capacity. All packed into relatively small, neat package. Versatile, quick, good looking star boat.

I know, but still, I think it's the best not-pure-carrier-carrier, because I see being purely carrier as sort of disadvantage. Carrier able do to something else semi-decently besides being great carrier is imho the better carrier :D @@Stingra87 Galactica ex aequo. Old lady!

The fanmade wing commander game using i think the freespace engine included a detailed version of a ship that i dont remember seeing on WC3 is the lexingtown or something like that, a massive large carrier that the description says that is the backbone of the carrier fleet of the confederate fleet, daaaamn is so large that you can go thru at full burners and is imposible to crash inside hahah

If you're an anime fan then the Godwana Class from Gundam Seed Destiny is a massive one; 1200m long / 16 catapults / hundreds of mobile suits. Good for hybrids as well; the ArcAngel and Minerva are really good battle-cruisers; the ArcAngel could even go underwater, to bad neither of them every carried a full team of suits.

Speaking about flaws in ships, in the Thrawn DUology, Zhan says in the mouth of some bounty Hunter that the ISD is the result of the addition of 150 000 design flaws that can only work with proper Imperial over maintenance. And about carriers, the Homeworld 2 Hiigaran Shuttle is the dedicated carrier, with only point defense machineguns as defenses. The ship is more of a support ship transport than a true battlecarrier, but still. The Hiigaran Carrier, can also be a nice design although it is primariry a support ship shipyard facility, it can take the role of a support and attack craft carrier into battle as it can carry more than a battlecruiser in terms of squadrons. But it is next to defenseless and will fall easily with very few hitpoints and few point defense machineguns. The Complex mod can enhance those ships with heavier kinetic guns, shield generators or in the stock game, you also can add a cloak generator to make it invisible when launching its payload.

Point of Order: The Bengal class is a strike carrier designed to operate independently of a battlegroup. The Claw is operating alone during all her most impressive triumphs. (Vega Campaign, Sivar Dreadnaught etc.) In fact they relied upon this capability when they inserted her behind enemy lines for the strikes at the Vega HQ, and the abortive strike on Ktithrak Mang. That being said fantastic video and super stoked to see the Bengal properly represented. You called the Vesuvius perfectly though.

"not just a sea carrier in space" I've got news for you: Galactica's launch and landing systems are exactly like taken straight out of a sea ship. The launch catapults are entirely unnecessary in space, as are the couple of scenes where it is "soo hard" to land your viper in the deck (Galactica is absolutely stable in space while a sea carrier will bob and weave due to winds and waves). I love Galactica but it does have (even in the new series) some theatrical-only stupidities that are totally not necessary in space.

If it wouldn't be a list of pure carriers, I would have suggested the Kustos Class "battleship" from Warhammer 40k, more specific the K'or vattra, the Tau's merchant & military fleet, however it isn't a real carrier, as it was designed specifically to be able to hold it's ground aiganst multiple smaller enemys, and launch bomber raids at enemy battle cruisers, or even bigger ships that will destroy or at least kripple them before they can do much, Wich actually works really well, as it can win aiganst nearly any single ship in existence (apart from some special chases like the Terminus Est) and won't take much damage when fighting anything smaller than a cruiser. Therefore you can build interesting strategys around it, or well to be fair it's mostly : find out what the most important ship of the enemy is, destroy it in an instant, and support your other ships, even though the Kustos makes a good bait: your enemy can hardly ignore it, but it won't die easily.

I have a question for a carrier-use in the Star-Wars Universe ... If I fly some heavy fighter (like Y-wing or Gunboat) and have a carrier or station in maybe 25~100km outside for rearm and refuel ... can I use a short boost from my hyperspaceengine for a tactical jump out of the battle and closer to my carrier or station?

Flying Aircraft Carriers were becoming a minor Fetish in the Transformers toyline for a while Look up ; Armada Tidal Wave or Titan's Return Alpha Trion & Broadside. Tidal Wave especially is basically a flying aircraft carrier - but he can also split up into sub components that are a landing craft, a smaller Aircraft carrier and a Battleship. (as well as become a robot).

Homeworld and Halo ships are definitely really well designed and iconic. But while I do love the Covenant ship designs, you can’t count out UNSC carriers, like the Athens class, Epoch class, Punic class, and of course the Infinity class. And of course, those are just the _dedicated_ carrier vessels. You cant forget the Marathon class, Halcyon / Autumn class cruisers either, which were all capable of carrying at least 1 wing of Longswords and Broadswords each. Heck, the Autumn class cruisers were designed with interchangable modules, such as missile pods or hangar bays. These modules could be swapped depending on mission requirements, meaning Autumn class cruisers could be changed from a frontline combat role to a light carrier in days, or even hours.

I'm a little surprised at the absence of Homeworld's Kushan Carrier. It wasn't pretty, but it fits the bill; carried small craft, which actually required its support, and had next to no combat ability of its own. Basically a flying box with fuel tanks and holes in the side. The Hiigaran carrier in Homeworld 2 was, in most respects, even better. Not only prettier, it had a slow collection and rapid launch of strike craft. But it could be argued that some of its upgrades made it too combative, and they removed the fuel requirement.
