Excellent build, in the process of building this kit, also highly recommended. I had the same frustration with panel line washes until I found Flory models wash “Dark Dirt”, it’s clay based and will not stain and can be cleaned up with water or completely removed with water.

My 79 yo Dad and I saw a Thursday pre- release of the movie in IMAX and he claims it is the best action movie he has ever seen and insisted in paying me back the $20 for the ticket because it was so good. It has made everyone I know, that has watched it, cry and sit on the edge of their seat and possibly bite their nails. It was epic and the proceeds over the first weekend prove it. I am so glad to share this joy with you @Mister G's Workbench and your offspring! I plan to see it again b4 it leaves theaters.

Nice build! I had more trouble than you on the intakes (the external sidewalls didn't want to join correctly), but overall, this kit is really more enjoyable than Kinetic's Legacy Hornet. One more thing I would have loved from Meng is the white squares that go inside the nozzle (three per nozzle petal).

Thanks very much - I had some initial issues with the fit of the intakes but after messing around I got them to fit. And I agree with you on those squares - I think Afterburner decals gives them in their Hornet sets. Thanks very much for watching!

Top Gun has been my favorite movie since i was a young child in the 80's. 2 things that prove I am old is that my brother worked at "The Wearhouse" which went bankrupt in '99 and and he gave me my first "VHS" tape(which is also extinct), Top Gun. My parents put it on for me every time they needed a break from me and they knew I would be consumed by the movie and leave them alone. for at least an hour. I had immediately fallen in love with the F-14 and still am today. After watching this video I went to Michaels and bought the Revell Maverick Super Hornet. I will be watching this video a few times more to feel comfortable attempting a 5 difficulty level. Gorgeous plane and great work Mr. G. I can only hope mine will be half as good.

Thanks very much Matthew! Back when Top Gun came out I had the green pilots' jacket and bought the video as soon as it came out. I always loved the F-14 and I had the Monogram kit back in the day. Might check the fighter weapons school emblem on the tails. A lot of the Meng kits it says “U.S. Nany” instead of Navy I think I’ll get the Meng kit but build Maverick’s other Hornet, Dagger One. I have the luxury of deciding this after the movie has been out.

Hey John, for panel line wash try Tamiya. You can mix the brown and black so its not too stark, and its oil based, so wiping it off with thinner will not affect an acrylic or laquer based paint.

FYI all up there were three jets painted up in the Pete Mitchell scheme which were two single seaters and one twin seater. After filming for the movie was completed, all three were sent for rework to be used by the Blue Angels. A couple of the grey jets used for the movie were also reworked for the Blue Angels. The numbers you mention under the tail are known as Bureau Numbers abbreviated as BuNo which is the Navy's assigned registration number. Boeing assigns their own manufacture number which is constructed of the model type ie E for single seat or F for twin seat followed by its number in the production cycle for example the first Single seat and first twin seat were assigned E-1 and F-1 respectively and likewise for the EA-18G Growler, the first production jet was G-1. The twin seat used for the movie was BuNo 165796 and the two single seaters were BuNo 165536 and BuNo 165667. All three jets are early LOT Block 1 jets with 165536 being the oldest and was easily recognised as it did not have the square "pizza box" IFF antenna on the nose in front of the cockpit. The Twin seater was primarily used for the in cockpit shots with Tom Cruise in the back seat with 6 IMAX cameras mounted on top of the rear cockpit instrument shroud and despite some of the media reports, no he did not fly the jet and although the F model super hornet does have a connection for a control stick in the back seat, it is highly likely no control stick was fitted to remove any temptation and only the Super Hornet conversion units would likely have a stick in the back for the instructors.

@@MisterGsWorkbench I think the good stuff has been shown in the three trailers that were released. I don't like when the movie people release trailers with all the good stuff. Makes for less of an impact or lower opinion when you see the full movie. Am still looking forward to it but certainly not as much as when it was first announced. Nothing will replace the original though. The Tomcat and Tony Scott's imagery were the highlights of the original. I saw the F-14 they used for Top Gun 2 just two weeks prior to it being acquired by Paramount. It was at the San Diego Air Museum restoration annex at Gillespie Field just north east of San Diego city. It was still in it's original VF-24 Renegades markings and after filming was returned to Gillespie Field void of it's original markings but you could see the shadow outlines of the markings that Paramount had used on it.
