I’ve always felt that unless you live in a manor, it looks silly to me when curtails pool on the floor! Much like she said, it looks like you ordered the wrong length. I know this is a very standard “rule” in interior design, but it simply does not resonate with me or make sense to me at all. I also find that a curtain touching the floor gets dusty, catches underfoot, etc. I like them to hover a few inches above the wood floors to make it easier to clean and so that they don’t drag along the dusty floor when I open and close them. It’s funny how so many design rules are intuitive, but this one has never made sense to me practically or aesthetically. 🤷♀️

It is a dreadful idea for pet owners. Stray fur is a way of life. Some designers take small children into account. I wonder if any of them consider the family pet? For example, I've learned to shun upholstery fabrics that hang on to pet hair for dear life. The same holds true with carpeting. Even when pets aren't allowed on the furniture, their hair "flies through the air with the greatest of ease".

Just watched this post and I like Lisa Holt. She has a great personality and heaps of good advice. However, I am so in agreeance with you and do not and can not agree to curtains dragging on the floor. The images Lisa showed...the the curtain hanging neatly just above the floor is aesthetically pleasing to look at and complimentary to the rest of the room. Urrrgh all that dust dragged and showing on the base of curtains is a real put off. If interior designers believe this is the look then I'm definitely mistaken by their intelligence. It's hypocritical to say don't have clutter but have overcrowded fabric dragging on the floor. Yuk!!!
@Richard-vq7ud
4 жыл бұрын
I agree completely. To me curtains draging the floor look like you didnt measure properly. It does sort of look ok in the high end model homes, but lets face it, those are models, not lived in.

I have a thing about coffee tables. Usually they're so far from the sofa you have to buy a ticket to get your drink there safely; and they're just way toooo low. I had 2 matching resin items (can be 1 or 2 of any matching things of equal height) and they made for a nice base (18" high) and then had a square glass top made for the top. (size accurate) It's beautiful and you can lean over to get your drink w/o throwing out your back. Everyone loves my coffee table! Remember the series ''Frasier" ? His living rm had a coffee table with 4 black bowling balls as a base and I forget what the top was, it was 2 low for me -- but it was beautiful. where do you get a cool base? Use your imagination.

I agree with most of your tips, especially about pictures hanging too high on the wall and toning down the clutter. But drapes that puddle on the floor remind me of pants that drag on the ground. And yeah, my rugs may be too small, but I'm happy with them. Fun video. Thanks.

You are awesome Lisa! Though I'm not a designer by profession, I have a background in industrial design and architecture, and I am an artist. You touched on one of my biggest peeves: People consistently hanging paintings, framed photos, etc. too high. Grrrrrrrr . . . and hanging their TV's too high as well. The other thing, as an artist that has always made me crazy is people thinking the colours featured in a painting or print had to colour match the decor of the room/space (???!!!) they wanted to hang it in. A painting is meant to move you emotionally in some way, not match your throw pillows or rug. It's all about the type of frame you get for said painting, rather than its content as to whether it will "match" your decor. Excellent videos, keep them coming.

As someone with cats who love to play hide and seek in the draperies or wrap themselves into any loose fabric, I can't have them pooling slightly on the floor. They would get torn down or have holes in them. Mine are skimming the floor. It would be interesting if you could do some options for those of us with pets since we sometimes have to make different choices for practical reasons.

I'm so glad I found your channel - I LOVE it! We're building a house, and it's a classic, turn of the century Parisian style. It's going to be 5,600 but over 8,000 under roof. We had height restrictions, so it's two stories, and the ceilings are at 10' and the doors are 8' tall. Because it's a classic design, we opted for designaed rooms, rather than open space concept - keeping true to its classic design. We're EXCITED. Im going tio br brave, and fo the decorating myself. So, I'm watching your videos, liking them all of course, and listening as much as I can. I have a good eye for decorating, and used to be a drafperson for an architectural firm, so I an easily draw the rooms, furniture, etc. I actually designed the house, and supervising its building. Thank you for explaining about the whites. It always bugs me when I see some home shows and all the walls are stark white and the lighting is cool too. I call it the space ship look. ikr it makes your home look like your doctor's surgery. The other problem is people going for trendy cool toned whites and greys because it looks good in magazines (where the room was professionally styled and photographed with special lighting) and get a surprise when the walls look blue and they don't like it. Completely predictable effect because people don't take the time to understand undertones in neutrals.

This kind of ties into the drapery thing, but hemming tape is amazing if you don't know how to sew, or simply don't want to. Works fantastic and can go through the wash and dryer. Another hint: works fantastic on pants and clothing too :D One thing I was expecting was about furniture being placed against the perimeter of room. Obviously, you can't avoid this in smaller spaces but in larger living/family rooms, it looks extremely odd when the sofas and chairs are pushed out to the point that people need to get up and walk over to the coffee table to grab their drink haha.

Some people really like the uniformity of a matching bed set, it's calmer and more clean looking to them, including subconsciously, meaning they may not know how to describe it but it helps their nerves to see uniformity in the bedroom with matching pieces. It's soothing to the eye and more calming for some people who really Need it after a stressful day at work. After all, it's supposed to be the most soothing and comfortable and relaxing room in the home, besides but more so than the living room. Good sleep and 'your domain--your bedroom' is Quite Important, esp in these times. Don't forget to encourage organization, de-cluttering and letting go of stuff in the bedroom and the closet in there. Most people do not realize how much they have over-shopped and now own. Encouraging the awareness of so much clutter being a dragging force of negative energy and too much stuff everywhere is just a sad vicious cycle for many....They see it all and get depressed about it. Instead of getting some things out of the house through donation to Goodwill or holding a garage sale, they go shop some more! Bringing in Even More stuff into the home. Americans just do Not realize how much they overshop for things they might use just once or twice, left to sit in a corner, cluttering up a messy shelf, thrown under the bed, or literally stuffed into a closet, ultimately forgotten about and has now lost 75-80% of its cost value. Do people even realize??? There are now re-sale apps like LetGo and Mercari and ebay where you can get $ for your items too--if you have the patience for a real buyer to see it and claim it. Otherwise, it just sits there cluttering your precious space, claiming delicate positive energy you need around you. *Be more Mindful next time you go out to "shop." Do you NEED it? Will it make you Really happy for awhile? Is it worth the space it will take up in your home? Being mindful, as you see on magazines at the grocery store--THIS is what it means! This is your home and your space after all. It affects your mind and peace more than you know. If owning it will make you happy or it will be quite useful, then the purchase is justified. But in 2 or 3 or 4 years, will you Still be happy to own it? Will it be hard to get rid of? Just some thoughts.

Could you address all the different light bulbs? Some say Daylight, Incandescent, Vivid white, Edison, Bright white, LED, Fluorescent, on and on! Some are very yellow when on and others are daylight or even brighter. When you are lighting a room, I guess the question is what ambiance you want to create, but I'll bet there are also some rules? @@LisaHoltDesign Perfect! I have a cream-walled kitchen and (not my design) the dishwasher is next to one wall and over time that poor wall will catch stains that can’t be wiped off. 😕 I’m thinking a neutral colour but busy wallpaper (sage? sand? eggshell blue? or any mix thereof) in a 1950-60s stylised art style. It’d solve the dishwasher, go w the pale sandy cabinets+counter and suit an otherwise relaxed Scandi vibe. (Like Stig Lindberg’s ’Pottery’, but in beige/sand)

It’s very inexpensive to put just about any light fixture on a dimmer. About $10 for the light switch only, about $30 for a WiFi-enabled light switch or $10-15 for a smart plug that you can plug ANY lamp into. Home Depot or Lowe’s.

You know, they dont have to bunch up on the floor, but they can be floor length without a gap. Nothing to me looks worse than curtains that are too short. It's like it draws your eye to it. Lisa- how high should a “chandelier” type fixture be from the table below it ?
@LisaHoltDesign

Good question, depending upon the style of pendant you have, the bottom of the pendant should not be any closer than 30 inches to the top of the table, but could be as high as 35, depending upon the scale and shape of the fixture, the table, and your ceiling height.

I’m so excited to have found you! I need advice right now badly! I’m choosing floor plank tiles and countertops for our renovation kitchen/dining room. I’m not having fun like I thought I would. The tile choices are narrowed down but I’m so scared to make the wrong decision therefore wasting money. My husband and I have renovated the rooms: demolition, creating the layout, choose cabinets, etc. we did all the walls, ceilings, I installed and floated the sheetrock... I’m burnt out. Entire housing developments have been built before these rooms are finished. But...we’ve made it this far and on the downhill slope. Hiring help is out. We have enough in the budget to buy materials, but to hire help...nothing is or ever was budgeted for professional help excluding HVAC and plumbing. We’ve saved tons of money but don’t have a life and the dust is terrible. On top of all this... I planned a wedding for 2 years. Yep, I’m completely burnt out and my husband is on my LAST nerve!! (Not good when ya just married). So your advice is welcomed and I’ll be watching a LOT of these!!!! Plz pray for me. 😄Thx.
