In my opinion, your observations regarding skills and certifications are spot on. Ultimately, it's the practical application of what you learn that matters, not just the certificate itself. Regrettably, there is a high degree of cheating in the field of certifications, particularly within my industry. This highlights the significance of acquiring actual skills and knowledge, rather than just relying on a certificate. What truly matters to employers is your ability to perform the job, not just a piece of paper indicating certification.

@@JUBA524 Thank you for responding. Although I appreciate your input, based on my personal experience and previous CCNA certifications, I have never encountered difficulty in securing employment without a vendor certification. It ultimately comes down to one's relevant experience, which takes precedence over certification. Additionally, possessing a bachelor's degree, particularly in computer science, holds greater importance in the hiring process. That’s just my experience.
@brotherhondo
Жыл бұрын
Degrees will always hold more weight in the same field as a certification. And experience in completing complex tasks is more important than the certifications themselves. You mentioned cheating in the certification industry. Are you saying that proctored and at home exams which are supervised via videoconference are rigged or there are ways to cheat? Or, are you saying those who receive the certifications are somehow cheating on their subsequent work?
@edwardjaycocks5497
Жыл бұрын
@@brotherhondo What I'm trying to convey is that cheating in exams is prevalent in some parts of the world. Additionally, some individuals focus solely on memorizing materials rather than developing actual skills, which can lead to brain dumping during exams. As a result, when they enter the job market, they lack the necessary knowledge and technical skills to perform their job effectively. I have observed this phenomenon frequently in individuals from the Cisco, Windows, and desktop support and helpdesk fields. Many of them lack the technical expertise required for their positions and shouldn't be in those roles. Unfortunately, anyone can claim to be an IT engineer, regardless of their qualifications, which undermines the legitimacy of the title.

Hey Josh, I’m glad I stumbled across your page, been watching your videos for about a week now! Question, I don’t have any work experience in IT but I’ve taken a few IT classes in high school and college and I worked in the computers department at Best Buy in high school lol. I was studying marketing at the university but during my second year I wanted to switch my major to IT. Didn’t really work out though because tuition just got too expensive so I had to go enter the work force after my 3 semester. I’ve been in the financial/banking industry ever since, with about 5 years of experience under my belt ranging from customer service, mortgage processing, loans etc. I don’t have a bachelors degree I just turned 25 and I’m currently doing the Google IT certificate because I want to finally make the career change and get into IT. So far I’m loving the course. Would you suggest picking up a cert and apply for jobs now? Will my 5 years of customer service be in my favor? Or should I focus on getting into WGU first? Also what is your opinion on the CompTia A+, network, and security trifecta? I was making about $27 an hour at my last banking job, will I find an entry level IT job that can match that? If not, I’m willing to start lower so that I can gain knowledge and experience. I’m in Minnesota, what would be the best route? I also want to note that I’m currently not working as I quit my last banking position which was a huge mistake in my opinion.
@JoshMadakor
Жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for watching! If you want to get into It, I recommend you just finish up your google cert and start working ASAP vs trying to finish off a whole-ass degree before working, haha. After you get a job and start getting some experience and coins, then look into going to WGU. Getting a degree (from them) is great, but it's not required to start working. The CompTIA Tri-fecta is good, can't go wrong there. You can find an entry-level It job for that, but it's gonna have to be in a metro area probably. You can "do more" and get a higher paying job (look at my most recent interview with Alex, his first IT job was between 80-120k, but he did extra stuff for that. I recommend watching this video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/sH6arKGHr6KkqXY Next, sign-up for the free portion of my course and watch the third video: coursecareers.com/joshmadakor After that, you should have enough of an idea of what you should do to get your job asap. You don't need much more than what you have already. Just need to make your resume, make your portfolio, practice interviewing, then start applying. Of course the course will help a lot, but you can decide if you need to go that route after watching the above videos ^^ Best of luck, and pre-congrats on getting into IT. If you try, you def gonna make it

Hey Josh/All, I’m looking to get into cybersec with no experience through WGU, and just curious if I should go right into the cybersec degree, or get a different degree and be in the realm of IT for a bit before going into cybersec. Maybe it’s a silly question and I overthink too much but would love the input!

P.s. currently finishing up the google IT support cert so I can be eligible for WGU

I would personally just get a couple certs on my own and get an entry-level it job for some experience and then continue my cybersec degree as I go instead of wasting time on a degree I didn’t actually want
@JoshMadakor
Жыл бұрын
IF you like the cyber degree, you can still get it and just get a job in normal IT. But like @tracy_ragland said, I would probably start working first. Maybe grab a cert, start working, then as you are getting used to your job and starting to stack a few coins, maybe start thinking about getting into the cyber program at WGU and just taking your time with it. Nobody says you have to finish your degree either before you start looking for Cyber jobs :).

@@JoshMadakor remember that even in an entry level it job, security is a part of it. even if you spend your entire day resetting passwords, thats still security. they may not call it 'cybersecurity' but it will help you...

I am a software developer trying to change to cyber security. I am planning to get a+, net+ and sec+. Is CCNA really worth it if I am not planning to do a career related to networking?

not really, it does look good on your resume tho, I'd rather just do the sec+ and pentest+

WGU really can give you every IT cert like they claim or am I confused? Like I thought you need certain years of experience to do each one like for example Security+ is 3 years no?

CompTIA cert's experience "requirements" are not really requirements. It's mostly a suggestion to test takers, and it helps CompTIA to make a claim to boast their credibility.
@JoshMadakor

They are just recommendations :). You can sit for any comptia cert immediately and you'll be awarded the cert if you pass the exam :)

Hey! Network+ is like 25% of CCNA in my head. If you happen to do Network+ first, you'll have a slightly easier time with CCNA, but CCNA is very broad and deep.

those are some nice certs! Are you applying hella? (how many per day?) Keyword matching? How's your interview skill? How's your portfolio? How's your resume? (Good for ATS? have you tested?)

@JoshMadakor
Жыл бұрын
That's fine TBH. I mentioned A+ over Network+ because Network+ has like 1300 or so job hits on indeed and A+ has over 3k. they are probably equal in terms of usefulness, but A+ is more well known and is kind of associated with "entry-level IT". Net+ is probably more useful in terms of skill, lol

I'd say picked one. Maybe based on a company you'd like to work for. Learn it well. You'll be able to pick up the others much more easily. I picked AZURE because I got my MTA in windows servers back in 2013, so it made sense

it's my empirical observation after having spent 14 years in this field. I have all the certs i talked about and I literally developed the course to maximize the speed at which people can break into the field and it's working. I'm interested to hear your thoughts--please make a new comment thread though so I get notified
