Thank you for addressing the "poverty" mentality. I grew up with very little and have accumulated possessions as a type of security. I am de-cluttering and now feel much better with clean "emptiness." You are very inspiring and relate-able.

I'm really glad about my progress as a minimalist... There were 6 bottles of cleaning chemical in my bathroom and now there are only 3. Will eventually downsize to just 2. For the shower, I'm hoping to ditch my hair conditioner once for all (using coconut oil daily, anyway.)

Melody, outstanding presentation! You expressed all your your points very concisely without too much expansion. Right on point about hoarding too. Many of us sadly inherited it from our parents. Personally it had trickle down effect from folks that lived through foreign country's revolution. My grandmother actually had a trunk stashed with $$$ and with time, the change of political powers & drop in currencies there came a day became useless. There are more family stories of course. For me minimalism = peace. And being married with 4 kids trust me domestic peace is KEY. Luckily cleared spaces can be obtained so as not to see everyone's stuff (shoes, tootbrushes, brushes, throw blankets ahhh!) I cannot function in clutter, I can't even breathe. It gets on my last nerve and I then it gets passed on of course. So my folks know to pick up if they want peace of their own ;)

I remember when I was a teenager my older sister was over and she came into my room. It was a disaster. She sat on my bed and kept commenting how I had such cool stuff but it was buried under a bunch of clutter and junk. I should get rid of what I don't use. That was the first time I think I ever heard someone tell me I could get rid of stuff I didn't like. It took a few more years for me to get it right for myself but it was a good feeling to have an entire room that I could just pack up in my trunk and move. fast forward almost 10 years and 4 kids later I am trying to get back to that space. speaking of condiments I need to find the condiment challenge you spoke about in another video

I am very spiritual so I very much understand your point there. Also grew up poor and often attended up to 3 schools in one school year. How fun to get a midweek video! I really like what you said about it being a customizable lifestyle, and clique-ishness doesn't belong! If you don't want to be vegan you don't have to be; you don't have to sit in a dark room with one spoon and one t-shirt either lol I've been on this path about a year, and I find I have time to be in my own head to think. What I did with all paper things from my children (like drawings or certificated): I scanned them (and some 3D-things I photographed) and added them to my photobooks (one book each year = one or two pages of their best drawings and DIY-things). The rest I have stored on my computer. I plan to make a photobook only with their drawings and DIY-things for their 18th or 20th birthday so that they remember all of it. But I did not throw away everything, I kept like 1 or 2 pictures and DIY-things per year and put them into a keep-sake box for them so that they can later decide if they want to keep them or not. Hope that helped!

I completely agree with all of this! My life doesn't reflect it, but I wish I was there. I started a bullet journal, because I realized that I am cluttered in my thinking and everything was done ad hoc. I wasn't getting anything done that I really wanted to do. The bullet journal is not electronic, which was a huge appeal to me because I'm starting to get burn out - I need simplicity and focus. Deleting apps was the first step for me. Next is the bullet journal. Now I am scheduling the time to do things and writing it out makes it reality. I implement it next month, so we will see how well it goes! Once I get my bullet journal down to a science, my next step will be elimination. Thank you so much for making these videos. It has inspired me to make the changes that have been languishing in my mind emotionally, but I haven't been able to put them to words or action.

Yay new video! I'm a new subscriber and I've already watched almost all of your videos. I'm trying to get into minimalism but it's sooo hard right now. I have way too much stuff. I'm starting by NOT buying materialistic things :). I've come to a realization that hoarding useless things is borderline stressing me out. Seeing the clutter gives me a headache. Every week I try to clean/organize the house but man do I need the discipline. Thanks for the advice on minimalism! I'd like to know your thoughts on collections. I have a boyfriend who has a ton of really cool collectors items that he's accumulated over the years. It's our "decor" if you will, and it's still growing. Did you ever go through a phase where you collected things? And if you did, how did you decide to get rid of them? I'd like to see a video of top things you COULD get rid of, but aren't, such as: clothes- extra socks, underwear/under garments that aren't being worn but taking up space Makeup/skincare- perfectly good makeup or skincare that you don't use Stationary- Pens, highlighters, paper, notepads/sticky notes Electronics- chargers, wires, cameras, calculators, batteries, etc. You may need them someday, but probably will never use them. ... and how you should get rid of it. Donate? Trash? Recycle? My problem with decluttering is usually idk HOW to get rid of things because I always feel bad for throwing away perfectly good items, but also that I don't know what Goodwill will take. Thanks!
@AWanderingEye
7 жыл бұрын
amusedal I would recommend looking beyond Goodwill in my community there are religion based thrift stores who will take lotion, notebook paper, shampoo samples, filing cabinets, heavier furniture, TVs...so start with your list and contact 2-3 stores. Others have recommended homeless shelters (sock, undergarments) or women's shelters (unused but open hygiene products, children's items). Libraries will take books, but may sell for fundraiser not necessarily keep for their shelves. And you will recycle some things if time for selling isn't available. Cut yourself some slack, work to keep momentum, there is no perfect only doing what you can, now. Good Luck!

hi there. I really liked your ideas and the way you structured your talk. thank you for sharing your thoughts on minimalism. however I do think you sound very hectic, speaking very quickly and breathlessly. this made it FEEL as if you were not very structured, which was really wrong, because your thoughts were very clearly organised. interesting. you are in a very calm peaceful room but your speed made you seem agitated a little. anyway just a suggestion to slow down a little, let us sit with each idea just a little bit longer, your imagery is strong, give it time to settle on people. best wishes

Margret Christie There have been a few comments on this issue and I know she is working on it. I think you are correct Margret, in that what is needed is more time in between ideas for us to comprehend them. I think a big part of the problem is in the editing, the ideas all meld together into one run on video. Perhaps if there was a pause in between all the great ideas it might help. So many good thoughts, we just need a moment to savor them....adding in a few seconds between ideas will take the content from "fast food" to fine dining.

Hi Melody, I noticed in your morning routine you didn't use a pillow on your bed. I am trying this out too at the moment. Can you do a video in this?

Hey Kerrie, I've never used pillows since I was a kid, but it's great to keep around for when I read in bed or watch a movie. Let me know if it works for you too!

Hey Melody, I really love the shirt you wear in this video. It looks very good on you! You should wear it more often. :-)

I really loved this video by the way. I took many notes and watch it twice. Thank you!

As always melody I loved this video. However it seemed rushed. Trying to listen to you and watch the little inserts above your head in such a speedy amount of time made me feel anxious. Seemed like the whole video was done in one breath 😉. Otherwise loved the content ❤️
